I have a feeling my stator failed on my 1980 rm125, i am going to call custom rewind in alabama, but is there a way to test it before i send it out? Bike ran and started fine today but going out for practice about 3/4 of a lap in it started misfiring and then just died. had no spark with one plug and very weak spark with the other. I was told its common on these that the stator coils fail. motor is fresh otherwise and its getting fuel.
Got the bike home and now has good spark and starts and runs great. Would the stator or coil act up once it got hot?
Also compression is around 115 on my tusk gauge I’m not sure if that would cause the problem I had but may put a ring in it and see.
Check all the wiring mine did exactly the same thing and the wires were old and touching pull everything apart and take a look at it and then redo it
The wires in the stator were touching?
Stator resistance checks out on an ohm meter when it’s cold. Would that still be the case if the high speed pickup was failing when hot?

Yes the wires were touching inside the insulation so take everything apart and re-insulate the wires
And it only happens when you get the engine hot
Go all the way to the plug up under the gas tank and redo all the wires so they can’t touch
I’ll strip the wrap and check them out and re shrink wrap them
Wiring looked fine. Having a hard time finding someone who can or will rewind this stator. May buy a hpi unless someone on here has a shop that could do it.
It's only a coil, you could rewind it yourself, it's not difficult, if you don't have access to a lathe, a battery drill will do...

Talked to him on Monday, he asked for a picture of the stator so I texted him. I never heard anything back so I called him the next day and left a message. Have yet to get a response so I’m assuming he doesn’t want to do it.
The only other options I could find are below. I have never used either one, might be worth a phone call though.

Thanks yeah, I tried them. Rickystator won’t do it, Rick’s said they possibly could but it would be 6-8 weeks and about what a hpi setup costs. I think I’m going to just buy the hpi at this point.
Suzuki stators of that era were notorious for shorting out when hot, I always brought a good backup after mine shorted out mid moto... another thing to check is the coil wire to the spark plug cap, the wires get old and brittle.
I have a 79 I have raced for several seasons. Absolutely the stator coils fail and it shows up late in moto as they short from heat.
Custom rewind has done 2-3 for me.
I would call again. Have patience,, I believe he is a small business, and as such an illness , wedding, vacation can be reason he’s not in shop today to take call and return messages.
Doesn’t take away from his workmanship.
I’ll give him another call this week, I just don’t want to be pestering him if he doesn’t want to do it.
I wasted 1/2 a season back in 78 with a loose wire in the stator housing shorting out on the spinning rotor intermittently over bumps and jumps.
I bought the hpi. working on getting that installed now.
