Cool story and great memory (nice keepsake there too), but you forgot DV and Reedy who both challenged him for wins and titles. I still believe if DV didn't get hurt during that photo shoot he would have taken the championship that year, but no astrics in racing, RC was a killer.

RC spotted DV 25 points as well that year

I barely remember that season. What happened?

was that the year RC crashed in the whoops at A1 ?

Yes and raced the next couple of rounds with a broken hand I believe.

It is not good enough to have blazing speed, race craft, a championship level team around you, unbelievable fitness and endurance, a fierce competitive mindset, confidence through the roof, or to avoid injuries.

You have to have all of that. Season after season. Year after year. You cant stumble. The relentlessness is almost impossible to match.

Truly a run of dominance that is extremely rare across any sport. Even most GOATs of other sports weren't truly THE best guy for 6-7 seasons in a row... they typically were among the best, for a very very long time, with maybe some of those years being the best.

The only comparison I can think of from the last few decades is prime steroid-era Barry Bonds.

MJ and Tiger I would add to it. Tiger basically hit what most would call their peak and stayed there for a decade. Unreal. Same with MJ other than taking a year off to play baseball.

That’s what I’m thinking, when RC got walked off the track by two guys one under each arm. I think  Ramsey won the race on the new CRF450. Rc was still on the 250.

Same season different races.... Ramsey's win was at Pontiac.  A great watch.

M. Jordan is the obvious comparison to Ricky. LeBron is on year 24 as a pro and is still trying to catch up to some of Jordan’s stats. Similarly, Tomac is a top 10 goat of sx/mx, on year 17 as a pro compared to Ricky’s 11yrs, and is nowhere near Ricky in most stats. If you don’t count his weird late career comeback, Jordan had a nearly flawless and compact 12yr career of utter domination basically just like Ricky. McGrath is the MJ of sx. Ricky is the MJ of the entire sport of dirt bike racing period.

DV won that A1 race where RC crashed out. I was 11 years old at the time and sitting in Kawi seating and still remember how loud those boos were for RC for switching to Honda lol

If you want to talk about RC's near misses, the injury that saw him miss the 2004 SX season was a blessing in disguise; he wouldn't have won that one.

But what happened happened and he retired undefeated. RC is the GOAT and will always be the GOAT.

Easy to say but RC had switched to the 450 right before doing his knee. Windham won like 5 races against Chad on that bike. Hard to imagine Ricky doesn’t have that plus more covered. Gotta err on the side of the GOAT. I don’t think Windham beat RC 5 times from 05-retirement

RC, I’m pretty sure was still on a smoker when he sat out the 04 Supercross season to get his knee fixed. When he came back to ride 04 outdoors, I believe he started riding the 450. Went undefeated and then went to Suzuki in 05. I’m positive Reed was on a smoker when he won the 04 SX championship. Seemed like 04 there were still a lot of guys on smokers. KW was on a CRF though.

Nope. He was going to ride the 450 in 04 SX

He's always said his '04 450 is one of his favorite bikes ever

As mentioned Jett has a LONG ways to go.

RC won 3 straight 125 titles and then 7 straight 250/450 titles. And did it on two strokes, four strokes and different brands. Crazy how dominant he was outdoors. Add in 5 SX 250/450 titles, 1 125 sx title and then two perfect seasons and one more season where he won all the overalls.

I think the year he won his 125 SX title was also a perfect season in that championship.
