So… the DOJ just agreed the IRS can never audit Trump or his family again?

Too bad Massie got booted. One of the only  republican officials that actually would’ve been good for America. Too bad he is anti-Israel lobby, that ended him. $33 million spent to defeat him, chump change for Elon to spend

Boundless blatant corruption.

That is just wild. Are You talking about how they want to pay people that were involved in Jan 6th? The people who he already pardoned . Maybe it's normal for the government to pay people who get their convictions overturned?  Either way in this case it makes it look like Trump is paying people for being loyal and storming the capital.  Is he trying to set up something for when his term is up? telling supporters that they should do something similar and he would have their backs?  At the least it rewards their actions.

I find it hard to see how anybody can look at what people were convicted for. The people who beat on police, and say that they didn't do anything wrong. Or somehow twist it into Democrats being behind the Trump supporters who attacked cops. But I've seen posters on here say they believe democrats are behind the violence. somehow getting the Trump supporters to commit the criminal acts. I hope those posters were trolling and really do not think that happened and Trump has not somehow made it public by now.

Do you guys realize that Trump sued the government for something that he did? His taxes were released while he was president, while he was in charge of the IRS. I could understand if he sued a particular IRS agent, but the whole agency?
Fucking truth is sometimes stranger   than fiction. None of this is legal, it’s going to be tied up in the courts for years.

I read it and it seemed to be pretty fair. I've never read any of the other stuff put out by them so I have to assume that they were as hard on the Biden admin as they said they were. I don't see why any reporter that wasn't biased wouldn't  also have looked into all of the things like they did with  both Biden and Trump.  It is the job of the press to hold politicians accountable, not be cheerleaders so in my opinion that article seems like it was done by somebody that was doing their job like they should .

So much "News" is opinion and not strictly the facts of what's going on.  If only  more of the press could follow the morals of Ron Burgundy.

What precedent does this set for the next election? It is literally paying people to go and protest the peaceful change of government.

How is that constitutional? And how can anyone on the left or right defend it?

A Democrat/Independent/ Republican  could get their supporters to storm the capital, or riot in some other public area, who knows maybe they storm and trash A past presidents library, pardon them and then pay them. and it would be the same thing. Except now there has been a precedent set ,  A future leader , Democrat,Republican, Independant, would know that as long as they are in power they can make it all go away, and pay the rioters on top of it.

Crazy his family  can cheat on their taxes now that they will never be audited.  What's the chance that he doesn't exploit that?

After it was pointed out by another poster I reread the letter and read some of the reporting on it and I had that future part wrong.

I read that letter quickly, so I could be wrong, but I think it said family and affiliates  of Trump's. How far does that go? Is it limited for current living family members or is it anybody in the bloodline forever? It did say forever, forever is a longtime to exempt an entire family .

It is not as bad that its only anything in the past. So they wouldn't be able to know they could cheat and get away with it no matter how bad. Other than this year's returns and maybe last years. But still seems like if there was really legit reasons for an audit that they shouldn't have been stopped. Wasn't Trump saying he was getting audited before elected too and that was why he wasn't going to release his tax returns ? How do you argue that the audits are purely political ? At least he only got a license to cheat this year, likely knowing what the settlement would be since he and his lawyer were working both sides of the argument.

Well, between the Supreme Courts 2024 decision, and this IRS 'thing', you've Now got an Emperor.

That the USA has now got to this level of empowerment / insulation of a single Individual, his Family and Businesses, over the Rule Of Law, is saddening.

You've a Wonderful Country, (that I've travelled to many times over the years) even with all of its problems - as indeed Every society has, but it's rapidly turning in to an Oligarchy / Authoritarian regime. And many appear to be fine with that.

Just give thought, you that approve of this, how you'd be reacting if such power / privaledge and 'protection' from ( well, Allowance of)  Unlawfulness, was given to those you don't like.

Because, if this is Not stopped, you can bet your arse, that those to come, of Any political bent, will take advantage of these types of Power and Protection to do Anything They Want To Do, or Have Done in the Past.

I may be wrong , but even the OP said it was PRIOR returns. It doesn’t give them immunity going forward.

Just to keep them from beating a dead horse,.. something some of us in here know a little bit about.

Saw this on the X.

Fun fact for the $10 billion lawsuit crowd. The IRS leak that exposed Donald Trump’s tax returns happened between August 2019 and November 2020. 405,427 other taxpayer returns were also leaked. Trump was president. His own pick, Charles Rettig, ran the IRS. The contractor who did it, Charles Littlejohn, worked on a Trump-era IRS contract and is now serving five years in federal prison. On January 29, 2026, Trump sued the IRS and Treasury for $10 billion over a breach that happened on his watch, under his commissioner, by a contractor his administration paid. He is suing the federal government he ran, for failing to stop a leak that occurred while he was running it. The taxpayer foots the bill either way.

'In suits brought by other Littlejohn victims, the Justice Department has argued—including during Trump's own second term—that the IRS bore no responsibility for the leak because Littlejohn was a contractor rather than a federal employee. The IRS did settle a similar case brought by hedge fund billionaire Ken Griffin, but Griffin received only a formal apology, no money.'

Thanks for pointing that out. Thats what I get for not taking more time reading the letter. Yet another great reason to read an entire article and never assume the headline means what You think it means.

I guess his license to cheat only applies to his '25 and maybe '24 returns since he likely knew what the settlement would be since he and his past personal lawyer were working both sides.

What are the chances that this settlement gets used by him to argue that its happening again if he ever gets audited again? While it's not written in that they can not ever audit him on future returns, what are the chances they do it and he uses this settlement to argue they have no standing and that its political again?   I suspect that it impacts the future in the same way it impacts a Police dept. that was sued by somebody. They stay away from that person to avoid getting sued again for the same thing.  But that is better than a all out  ban on future audits of future returns.

Just trying to stay on subject of the thread.  But since You asked, We will see how the phone thing pans out and IF the phones that "started shipping" lastweek end up actually shipping. The legal agreement still said it may never be built the last time I looked at it. I got an answer  to a question that I hadn't thought of,   it helped me answer the question I had and satisfy my curiosity.

How funny would it be for the phone to ship directly from China and the proud owners will get to see how the tariffs really work?   Regular ground  shipping will get from anyplace in the US to anyplace in the US in a week or so.   So those phones should be in customers hands any second now right?

While some may say there is no connection to Hunter and this settlement, Todd Blanch himself said  in a hearing about the settlement ,that Hunter would be able to make a claim for being targeted for political reasons and could receive a payout like the fine people who beat up police and shit on desks inside the capital during their sightseeing tour.

As far as Biden and his pardon of his son. I don't think that was very ethical either.  I also think that Trump would have targeted Hunter in the same ways he felt he had been targeted.  I think his pardon was more for political purposes  to avoid a politically motivated  punishment, and is very much like the stuff that Trump himself does. I would have rather seen Hunter go to court and deal with it like a regular person would have to.  What's Your opinion on that pardon?

What is Your opinion on Trump pretty much paying himself off with the settlement that is a topic of this thread?  Bringing up past corruption doesn't really wipe away the current corruption.Especially when  Trump was supposed to be the guy that wasn't like everybody else. Its funny to see the defence shift to "well the other guy did it too" .
