I have the IMS tank for my '23 YZ125 (which i believe is the same as the 250). It sticks out on the right side just a hair more than the stocker, but I got used to it quickly, and it is otherwise not a noticeable change at all. The left side hangs down really low so the extra weight doesn't impact handling as much as I was expecting (not sure if the Acerbis is the same, I know their older tanks had the extra capacity up high). Anyway, I highly recommend the IMS if you are at a crossroads.
It looks like the Acerbis for the newer YZs still use the longer neck up top. For that reason alone I’d go IMS, they have great customer service in my experience too.
IMS
I use an IMS tank on my 24' YZ250 for H/S, and swap it back out to the oem tank for shorter races. I have no issues with the IMS tank itself. It's a very nice tank. My only complaint about the tank, is that it came with a lot of plastic shavings still inside the tank when I bought it. I don't think they blew the tank out, after they drilled the holes for the petcock. Just beware, if you do go with the IMS.

We run the IMS tanks on our 22-25 model yz race bikes and have had no troubles out of them and like them pretty well. fit and finish is pretty decent to. But we do run Acerbis plastic and love their plastic if that helps any.
I have the IMS tank for a 23' yz250X so still the current body style, and I will say that you need to use a YZ petcock, the YZ-X petcock will not work in the way that the IMS tank mounts. I also had a problem with the IMS tank not being 100% flat at the petcock mounting surface, and the petcock leaked at first, but I was able to file it smooth and have had no problems ever since. IMS was extremely helpful during this process, as this tank design was brand new when I had purchased. I would recommend the IMS tank 100%!
I’ve had the same issues with an Acerbis tank for a KTM as well. Didn’t notice until it clogged up the petcock.
This company: https://www.trailtank.net is making an oversized tank for the new yz250 and yz250x. 3.3 gallons and looks good.
Seems like every IMS product I've tried didn't fit quite right.
Tanks that need to be "shoe horned" on and always leak around the cap.
Pegs required some filing to fit in the brackets.
Have not had any issues with Acerbis products.
Any pics of the ims on the 22+ yz?
My son just put this tank on his '24 YZ250x. It seems to fit good and you really don't notice the larger size it when riding. The only negative I've seen it that the top clamp with slightly touch the tank on full lock to the left side which in normal riding conditions doesn't happen.
That’s not bad, doesn’t appear to change the seat angle which is normally what bothers me
No it does not. I wish I could load a better picture. also the shrouds fit like the oem tank. and we havent had to mess with the fuel valve area but I'm sure with one or two you may have to clean the surface up. We actually have two of these tanks. one for a 125 and one for a 250.
The only thing I've had to do is put a spacer on the round plastic piece that the front of the seat slides into and holds into spot. this just made it easier to install the seat and not missing the slotted area on the seat on it. overall im happy with the tanks.
Had IMS tanks on our 24 YZ125's and took them off for Acerbis tanks. Rider didnt like the feel of the IMS tank plus IMS tank provides zero spark plug access, in fact IMS tank cant be removed with shrouds on unless shrouds are cut and modified. All acerbis tanks are dry break ready, and fit perfectly fine. The IMS tanks requires removal and replacement of one right side raditor bolt as well because the tank utilizes that location for mounting as well. Finally, i think the IMS tank for this model looks ridiculous. IMS makes a great product, they always have but in this case they missed the mark in my opinion. The acerbis tank does everything right, hits all of the marks, and is substantially cheaper than the IMS. I dont like the provided acerbis petcock but with VERY minor adjustments, the OEM petcock fits perfectly. Also, Acerbis provides a second petcock on the throttle side of the bike, i plugged that one and do not use it. The right side isnt that deep and has no problem splashing over to the petcock on the left. Acerbis wins this battle.
See above. Both tanks maintain factory seat angle
Pit Row
See above photos and description
neck height is the same on both tanks, IMS is more squared off and would probably hurt the boys more.
The Acerbis wins in the looks department......
Is there a sizable capacity difference between the two?
Both 3.2 gallons
Those of you on yz125, what range are you getting with the 3.2 gallon tank?
Rider and terrain dependant of course, but 50+ for us.
