Wish I could have went.  I would promise to stay in the corner and not touch anything.

The astronauts appear to be in tight quarters . You would think that they could design something where they had much more room.

They only have the capsule and that's it.  Artemis is using a legacy upper stage that isn't very powerful and only designed to take up capsule.  The Saturn V while having less thrust had a much more efficient upper stage and could carry 50 more tons to low Earth orbit, which included the command module and lunar lander.  The idea was to use a new much more powerful upper stage on Artemis 3 for a repeat of the old style Apollo missions where everything was sent up at once.  But NASA realized they are painfully slow and incapable of hitting budget, so they've passed the lander systems off.  Now the rocket is just a people carrier to orbit to dock with whatever commercial landing system becomes viable first from either SpaceX or Blue Origin.

And Northrop rocket boosters.  Not my program, but I am on an adjacent program.

The solid boosters right?  I worked on the SLS core booster for Boeing Space and Defense back around 2017.  It was painfully understaffed back then, you can see how Boeing wasted billions on the development.  Then the first government shutdown over the border wall happened and we didn't get paid for several weeks, I decided working on direct government programs like this isn't for me.  Plus even back then there were plenty of rumors SLS would get cancelled.

Yep, I've heard some stories about that program.   We also make the LAS for Artemis.  That thing is interesting ,  to say the least.  I was able to see some internal only videos from the take-off.  Pretty amazing stuff.

Hard to blame anyone for walking away from these kind of programs.  I'm doing the same, actually .

Or are those the X37b’s that now utilize the old shuttle highbays 🤣. Was wondering about that picture??? Here’s a 9 year old pic of one of the crawlers used for the Apollo and shuttle programs  being retrofitted to transfer Artemis from the Vehicle Assembly Building to the launch pad. Second pic is a crawler that was still set up for a shuttle.

Joey's 2nd and 3rd images aren't from Artemis, I'm surprised he didn't include the NAZI moon base, or is that still a secret?

I remember watching Apollo 11 on TV when they landed on the moon,  and this has been pretty cool too.

Proud to be an American today. The space program, keeping the world safe from Iran, President's wife speaking her mind. American, fuck yeah.

Beautiful day for a conclusion to a wonderful mission.

Pilot is a product of our local school system. Not sure what happened to my kids! 😄

We didn’t go back to the moon after ‘72 …because no one gave a shit anymore.

We didn’t go back for 50 years; because, there was no money or political desire.

Now, there’s both. Here’s why:

Helium-3, Space Port for space exploration…”Lunar Dominance and/or Fuck China & Russia!”…yada, yada, yada. Note: Boots on the Ground is gonna be a thing on the moon. Actually, it already is. Fuck China, Fuck Russia…indeed.

They said it was Bush 2 that got this program restarted.

I knew a couple people from high school that worked at NASA in Beltsville MD.

i've seen a lot of badass shit in my life. Pastrana 125 quad in Vegas. Tyson in his prime. Reed nailing that line at High Point in '09. Chuck Lidell. John Stockton pulling up in a mini van and fucking dudes up.

watching those guys hit the water after the multiple parachute drops was up there.

America! Fuck Yeah!

That capsule is HUGE compared to the originals that had them squeezed in like sardines.

Did this one go a LOT faster? Though the ones back in the day took a lot longer to get there and back.

The ones back in the day, Apollos, would orbit the moon not just slingshot around it.  So probably not as fast getting back from the moon.  The capsule would orbit while the lander went down to the moon.

I heard they were dealing with some wicked currents. Not sure if that was effecting things as everything kinda moves together in a current, but I guess it could.

They apparently practiced that a bunch in the gulf, so something must have been causing problems because it didn't look all that smooth.

My best guess at finding the crater that was named after Carroll ...

Artemis II astronauts have proposed naming a bright, previously unnamed lunar crater "Carroll" in honor of Carroll Taylor Wiseman, the late wife of mission commander Reid Wiseman. The crater is located near the lunar far side, and the heartfelt, spontaneous proposal was made during their historic 2026 lunar flyby, honoring Carroll's legacy as a nurse.

Sort of, Little Bush green lit Constellation in 2004 which was later cancelled by Obama in 2010.  Trump's NASA group brought it back in 2017 under the Artemis title.  We used a lot of Constellation tooling to build the Artemis core boosters, as it was basically a copy of the Constellation Ares V.  Bush's original timeline had us landing on the moon in 2020.

While I am happy NASA is starting to do stuff again,  that Jurassic splashdown and retrieval was brutal to watch.   50+ years later they are still doing shit the way they did it when I was in 1st grade?    FFS Elon lands his rockets on floating barges and/or catches them with huge jibs and NASA spends hours trying to get a bunch of inflatable boats up to the thing and extricate the crew.  smh      At a minimum they could have a huge eye hook on top of that capsule,  have a Sikorsky Skycrane or equivalent hover over the damn thing,  some Navy divers put the hook thru the eye,  and carry the capsule via helicopter to a waiting ship or barge.    It would be VERY easy to do that scenario,   But nooooo,  they are bobbing around the sea in those dinky ass boats dragging those people out like its a crash scene on the side of a highway.

Yeah, that was a tough watch.

Hell, they have 3 hooks for the parachutes already that they probably used to do exactly as you described after they got them out.

I'm skeptical about this actually being real.  Joe Rogan said that astronauts can't travel through the Van Allen radiation belts, so that's already been settled....!

Beautiful pictures from this mission!
