It seems like most pros started riding the age of 3. I was just wondering if there are any pros that started off riding or racing at an older age (like 10-16 or something)

John Dowd. I think the story goes that his first race was at 19 years old?

I think I heard somewhere that Weston Peick started riding about 5 years ago. Not very successful yet, I know. But he's a pro nonetheless.

Current pro Jason Langord Jr got a pretty late start. Old school guys will remember his Dad Jason Langord Sr as a former AX champion from the early 90s, 91 being his championship year. Story goes as young boy (either at or around a teenager?) Jr went into the attic to find something and dug up all his Dad's old stuff from his racing days. To that point his Dad had never mentioned being a rider or racer, nevermind past champion. Kid took it to heart and now he's starting his second year as an AMA pro. He made the night show several times last year but hasn't made a main yet.

Martin Davalos started when he was 11. Mcgrath when he was ten. and im pretty sure Tedesco started pretty late(10,11) also.

The fact that he's made it to the pro ranks means he's successful! Huge props!

There was a guy that I raced 85 beginner with locally all throughout 2003 (we were 13). He'd ALWAYS beat me. One day he beat me in moto 1 and then he got a flat in moto 2, so I won. That was the first time I ever won a race haha.

Well his name is Caleb Bertrand and he went 26-34 for 34th overall at Pala this year!

I thought MC started around 14, after his dad had taken him to some 3000 bmx races, where no doubt he learned how to keep the bike low.

That was his first race. He got his first dirtbike(1980 RM80) when he was ten.

Well that makes sense, he got to ride for 4yrs just for fun, probably learned more without the pressure to win, and brought that care free attitude to racing.

Your right. His dad bought a old beat up briggs bike when he was younger but never rode mx. Just around the property his parents had. Then he got his RM80 and but then really rode on a motocross track when he was 14. But being a national BMX rider helped him in motocross no doubt. And he already knew how to ride a dirtbike.

Little Jason was 12 when he did that, and he's either 17 or 18 now. Kid sure can scoot!

I believe Bryce Vallee has only been racing for 4-5 years. He has managed a moto win at Loretta's along with a pair of second overalls in the 450B classes (2009) and a third overall in the 450 pro sport class (2010). In his pro debut at Pala he went 17-20 for 21st overall.

I started riding when I was 15 and turned pro at the age of 21. I rode for about 3 months in my yard and then went to DCMX for a thurs. night practice followed by my first race that weekend.. I was so slow I got lapped twice in the 125beg. class(and it was only a 5 lap race).. Up until I was 18 I was only allowed to ride on thurs. nights, and race/ride 1 day during the weekend.

Do you remember which flick that was from? was it just from a net movie? or off of a DVD? I thought it was cool how they still had it.

I'm pretty sure Heath Voss turned Pro within 3-4 years of starting out.

After that little pull start bonanza he got a 1977 rm80b model in the early 80's and started racing in 85/86,won lorettas in 125C class in 87 then raced B class for half of 88 then turned expert and then full pro in 89..
Very fast progression-beginner to pro in 3 years...
