Dude roll's up to a local riding area on a SV650 street bike and claims to be a Navy seal and claims to have raced McGrath in the superdome, coming in second to him in his heat race, but couldn't remember his own PRO number at the time when I asked. Then proceeds to point out who on the motocross track who he could smoke on his street bike if he didn't have bad knees to soak up jumps cause his street bike didn't have the factory suspension his dirtbike had......shit was too funny!
True story- I passed you in a Vet race at Rolling Hills (in 2005 I believe).
Course, you were on the ground unconscious at the time, but still. I was running Vet B on a staggered start and you were running Vet A. You crashed and got knocked out. I thought it was cool that you came back to the track later that day to cheer people on.
Yeah, had a similar experience when I was selling some property. Somehow the title insurance guy and I got to talking about moto and he said that he used to race. I asked him what tracks and what level he reached, "Novice, Intermediate?" and his answer, "Oh I forget."
C'mon dude. NO ONE EVER forgets whether they were a novice or an intermediate. And in SoCal even if you didn't race you'd at least know that at one time there was this big deal track called "Saddleback." Geez!
Suffice to say I did not buy an alarm that day.
Pit Row
Two of the funniest:
The guy who used to wait around until the end of the race and then try to talk me into selling him a trophy, usually for first place - when he had gotten about 8th or so - out of 9 riders.
The guy who bought a Raptor when they first came out, would come to the track on a slow day, unload it, ride it around in the pits - enough to get some dirt on the tires - and then load it up. He never bragged to me but I did hear that he had stopped at a local watering hole on his way home and tried to make a legend of himself.
Here's a quick dictionary:
- I used to race the supercross series = I did the amateur day on sunday once
- My sponsors = my parents
- Factory bike = factory replica graphics on beater bike
- Mitch Payton = owner of local dealer
- I partied with ______ factory racer = passed by him at a vegas casino
- Had dinner with _____ factory racer = saw him at IHOP after the race and said hi
- I was the next big thing in my region = I was a sucker and believed my parents who wanted me to race to curb my desire to be a back-up dancer in a boy band
- I finished 5th at loretta's = I started 5th on the 1st lap of my regional qualifier before dropping anchor
People fucking suck, man. Everybody is full of bullshit so much they belive their own to be true.
I had a silly ass rag and I couldn't ride myself out of a wet paper bag but I always joke about how much I suck. I did my best to reflect that attitude im my rag. I prefer people who are real and don't blow themselves up. And all of the people I met who wrote shit and gave me their photographs seemed to do the same.
I met and befriended almost everybody in this industry...so fucking what. Now I work at a family shop where I get thrown under the bus by the family fuck ups who I have to watch out for, while I try to make up for their shortcomings hoping to keep the doors open. Yeah, I've had two raises in two years which is pretty lucky in these times....but still I go to work everyday feeling like an awkward retard amongst these people.
May I reiterate, people fucking suck. Everybody is full of their own bullshit. Even this industry is not small enough to wipe it out from within. Take that to a global level and we are all too stupid to free ourselves. None of that is Bernie's fault. He's still caught up in his own bullshit. He's still fun to remember, though. He probably still has a flat billed hat and stealing from the register and smuggling parts home to outfit a bike he doesn't fucking ride.
