The benefit of a 7’ wide trailer also comes in the form of not needing tow mirrors. Slightly less wind drag (still like pulling a parachute), and the amount of times you set an item on the wheel wells outside will have you lost without it when you move to 8.5.

Obviously is you are making the ultimate race shop on wheels, interior space is gold, but if you are Joe Average guy, 7’ has benefits 

The wind drag and weight are a big deal for me since I have a 1/2 ton. Plan to build a small toy hauler with a bathroom though so I'm sure the 7' wide trailer gets cramped quick. There's a place local that has high roof 7x16 on sale and I think that would be a good size but they all look good when they're empty.

The bikes are over the axles and he has the front end built with cabinets and stuffed with who know what. His load out looks good to me.

I posted pictures earlier of my 6x12 and I have a F150 2.7 Ecoboost. I've already replaced a torque converter and I need another one. Partly my fault for trusting the tow haul mode and not downshifting myself out of 6th gear. I also like to go fast.

Now knowing you have a 1/2 ton I would definitely recommend the 7' wide vs 8.5. 

 

My buddy just bought a 7' tall 7x16 trailer, I warned him before he bought it that it was a lot of trailer for his Silverado. It wasn't long before he traded for a F250. The 1/2 ton trucks are plenty capable of towing any trailer you want. Some people just want to go fast and not worry about anything.

We have a travel trailer right now and I absolutely do not mind cruising in the slow lane at 55 to conserve my truck and fuel. Maybe I will go with a 7', I just don't want to regret not going bigger. At least cargo trailers seem to hold their value around here.

This is my 6x12 setup. Fully insulated. I built the bed to ride over the seat of the bikes so I could just pull up to the track at night and hop in and sleep. What I've ended up doing mostly is hauling the bike in the bed of the truck that way I didn't have to fool with taking it down the next morning. The ebike can just go in and out the side door....The external fuel tank for the diesel heater and noisy fuel pump was a cool trick I found in another fb group. Also the jacks on the door make a nice patio. Not pictured, I have moved my spare to the rear ramp door like you typically see on campers. IMG 2136 5

I had also upgraded to a 2500. Yes my 1500 could easily pull a 7’ tall 7 x 16, but on a windy day it was white knuckle..(depending on the weight). 

Pulling with the 2500 is far more relaxing..

Super cool set up! How does the diesel heater work out for you? Did you start with a bare trailer? The ceiling looks really nice, what did you insulate with?

With a tail wind, I can pull my 25' camper at 75-80 for hours in comfort, With a nasty headwind, I can struggle to maintain 70 without the truck downshifting to 3rd (6speed F150). Wind/Air resistance is everything with gas half tons.

In a previous hobby, I had a 6x12 with 6'6 roof and we were like assassins in that. 80 everywhere out on the interstate. Wind would make it squirrelly as hell though.

Yep I borrowed my Dad's a few time and it's a huge difference. I agree so much more relaxed driving.

I've been using a van instead of my trailer, I've been enjoying no trailer.

Diesel heater works great. Dry heat is way better than propane. Started with a bare trailer but I had camped out of it for 2 years with a little bit of setup before building it to know what I wanted. Broken collarbone and separated shoulder last winter gave me time to actually build it lol. Foam board for insulation. I think 1” in walls and 1.5 on ceiling if I remember. After building 4 trailers and one box van I ordered one finished for the shop but it’s gonna be a pretty simple interior with a concession door. I will have to install slatboard on the wall opposite the concession door. But the interior will be wired and finished out with lights and a/c installed. It’s a 8x20 and I do have a 1/2 ton Ram with a Hemi. Hoping a set of air bags and load distributor hitch will make it tow ok.

Thanks man. Yep, 6x12. Have no more room to build stuff inside. Fold down bed, shower, water tank, and cabinets so everything has a place.  Lots of hours building this thing.

I pull the heck outta my 20ft boat and my enclosed 6x12 with my 2017 expedition and 2022 transit, no issues with either using tow haul mode. I do limit myself to 70mph with the boat and 75mph with the enclosed trailer though. My motorhome is always in town haul mode, I wish they made a way to set it as default so I didn't have to push the button every time.

A lot less wind drag with a boat. My F150 has 3.31 gears which is why it's not the greatest at towing. If I would have kept it out of 6th gear, I believe I wouldn't have torque converter issues. I also have the 2.7, I've heard the 3.5 is a beast at towing.

Id like to see how my 4.6 van tows my trailer, I don't think she would do to well after being used to an Ecoboost.

I had an Econoline with the 4.6, it struggled without a trailer 😂. I've had a transit with the 3.5 Ecoboost and now a NA 3.7 I think, both are way better than the 2 valve 4.6. The boat actually pulls worse than the enclosed trailer, it's heavy and you really have to watch your corners, from the hitch to the end of the swim deck is 25ft.

I was hoping you weren't going to say that about the big block 4.6. I really like using the van and I was hoping to buy a small camper. Something around 16' and about 3000 pounds. I have a 16 month old and I don't want Mama roughing it in my 6x12.

I really should upgrade my truck, but she's almost paid for and no truck payments equals more funds for toys.

^^^ That's nice. I have no idea why so many trailers have wheels outside the box, I'd rather have the extra width inside plus the "Shelf" from the fenders inside the trailer all day.  Perfect place to make a couple storage boxes

I am assuming you installed those windows? I’d like to add some windows to my trailer, but a bit nervous cutting a hole in the side of my trailer. I realize it’s not that difficult, but just hesitant.

Your window install went well? Any advice? Or it is mostly straight forward?

Don't be scared. If you get one 14.5" wide you won't be cutting studs. Any wider and you will have to add a header and sill filler pieces for framing.

Yeah man its pretty straight forward. The hardest part was making the decision to do it lol. Watch some videos and take your time and it will be easy. I have 2 windows and a maxxxair fan installed. Camped in it multiple times in rainstorms and no leaks at all. I would do it again 100x over. My quick tips would be

-Measure multiple times until comfortable

-Make a template (if your window doesn't come with one)

-Painters tape on the saw and trailer

-Cut very slowly and let the saw do the work

-I used butyl tape on the windows and butyl + self-leveling sealant on top.

-Painters tape on the saw and trailer

-Cut very slowly and let the saw do the work

-I used butyl tape on the windows and butyl + self-leveling sealant on top. 

Agree and just deciding to do it is the hardest part- I over analyze everything!  Like deciding the right size, location, height…etc..

I have watched several videos and looks pretty straight forward. Next spring for sure!

Do you guys with the single axle trailers pay attention to your load capability? Most 6 x 12s have a 2000 to 2500 lb. axle. The weight of the trailer can push 1000 so your capacity can be cut in half. 2 or 3 bikes, cabinets, bunks, water, big tool boxes, compressor etc. will eat up the the rest faster than you realize. Most stock tires are junk. If you try to go to a D rated tire you need to upgrade wheels too. I knew as soon as I put 2 bikes in my 6 x 12 I should have bought a 7 x 14 tandem axle.

I havent had much chance to work on mine until now so just getting started and mocked up to see how I want things.

Most I've dealt with are 3,500 lbs axles.
