It looked like him and JCoop were on '25s.
I would have thought the Hydro clutch would have been better for the clutch life, as it auto adjusts the freeplay,
Jason Anderson spoke about having to get used to adjusting the cable,
The problem is you can’t tell when you are overheating a hydro. It auto adjusts until it’s gone.
With the cable you get a lot of warning in the lever, can adjust and go easy on the clutch for a bit and actual feel it start to come back.
He finished his races, and not with the medics.
I'd call that a great debut.

No, but i have represented the USA more times than Deegan.
And probably raced in more countries.
Not that has any relevance.
He killed the bike twice, in 8 minutes. If i cant point that out , because you think i dont have 'relevant experience' , then nobody can say anything about anyone.
"He wanted to at least sound fast..."
Sucker stole my favorite trick
I know you could put a cable clutch on a 26 YZ450F (a la Eli's KTM), but is it as easy as bolting on the mechanical actuator from a 23-25 model? I looked up the crankcases and they are a different part number 25 to 26, so that might not be an easy option. I would say it would be easier to convert from a hydraulic to a cable than the other way around (I'm not talking about the Magura setup). I remember when Honda went to a hydraulic and had to weld and machine the cases on their works bikes, while you would just have to make a mechanical actuator like KTM did to replace the slave cylinder to convert to cable.
Don't be obtuse, you didn't point out that HD overheated his clutch twice in 8 lap motos, you then followed with: "can you even ride"
Then you interjected your relevant racing experience. Fine.
I simply countered by asking if your experience is relevant to the discussion. Were you racing a 450 in SX at the highest level, and running a podium pace? If not, I'm not sure your experience, however vast, adds to the discussion.
HD isn't getting paid to make clutches last. He's getting paid to win. The team literally brought a solution along with the cable rig, obviously expecting this may happen - as it did with Tomac. Can Tomac even ride? He had the same issue.
HD has been shit on for his whoop speed for years. He's obviously working on that, blitzing them every lap in his debut run on a 450 at race pace - that's not going to be easy on a clutch, and MAYBE, just MAYBE - with the cable he could feel it going and adapt, proving he in fact, can ride, and the hydro isn't suitable for every 450 rider in SX...
I wonder if he could have gotten a better start and a third if he could just feel the clutch..
But he didn't win either
Brilliant take.
You think Star and Fox would have preferred the podium and a clutch swap or:
"Deegan places 7th but used the same clutch the whole night!!"
This place, I swear.
Not shooting the messenger.
This is maybe just another excuse for the results. ?
I’m not making a ass kissing suck a duck atta boy post either about HD being the best.
Why can’t he just be honest and say there is a lot he needs to figure out. ?
You think swapping the entire clutch to a cable for the last moto - then getting much better start and results in that moto, was potentially a grand plot to make excuses for the perfectly acceptable results in the first two motos...
Walk me through this potential conspiracy timeline step by step, the logic has to be fascinating
You are the one who said he's getting paid to win, which he did not.
You are right - and I should have worded that "paid for results" .
I don't think Star gives a single care if they have to discard 90% of the bike after each moto, if the kid is on the podium, winning, getting interviewed, etc.
Edit to add:
It's wild, but expected that everyone wets themselves over Tomac abusing bikes, but when HD does it he's a punk.
I guess it's because HD was born into a successful racing family with a self made dad who built a lot of opportunities for his kid.. wait -
I’ve seen riding coaches take the seat off and send riders out for laps because riders were sitting too much, maybe HD needs someone to take his clutch lever away for a few days?
Edit: I’m not saying that I’m a better coach than Brian D, or that I know better than Star Racing. I’m just floating an idea..
You must not have listened to his post-race interviews.
FFS this was only a single WSX race and everyone is going to asses his abilities off of one race that doesn't matter or mean shit....those of you that thought he was going to win....you're idiots....those of you that believe this is barometer to measure success in the future...you're idiots....Lets not make judgments about his ability on 450SX until he actually races a real SX race on a real SX track...
Few things. If you cant make a clutch last the length of a heat race, there's an issue. You also dont absolutely have to use the clutch to have whoop speed. See James Stewart.
I expect he'll be really good, and figure things out.
Pit Row
Hey!
Are you judging me?!
🤣
If you are burning clutches out round that track, in those conditions, you are never seeing the end of a 20min +1 SX main.
Just like Barcia, he does not understand the basic rules of inertia, and mechanics of an engine, and what revving a 450 to the moon does to the ability to actually get the bike round the track.
Abusing a bike till it quits, is not a skill.
He will learn, because he has to.
Its not like he had to look far up the track to see how to do it right is it.
He can make the clutch last, when he has a cable and can feel what’s happening - see moto 3
He couldn’t, in his first race using one on a big bike, tell the status of a hydraulic clutch, which is an issue with hydraulic clutches.
Again, he didn’t smoke the manual clutch.
I agree with everything else you are saying.
I am no Deegan fan but I got the feeling from one of the interviews that there was more to the clutch issue that he wasn’t saying. I wonder if Yamaha has an issue with the hydro clutch. I can’t believe a clutch that Tomac could get through a whole outdoor race can’t survive 5 laps no matter how hamfisted the rider is.
Eli wasn't on a hydro clutch....
Other than perhaps overall feel, I believe that this is a big reason why Tomac prefers the cable, so that he can feel the clutch going away and compensate for it.
Guessing the dislikes are Barcia fans but you're totally correct.
I assume the clutch pack is identical between cable and hydro clutch, but if the hydro isn’t doing its job the clutch will slip and die.
Ha! never....I just find it amazing that after one race there are those that want to say he didn't perform and that he sucks at riding a 450 and those that are already claiming he is going win his rookie year.....key here is that it was one race....one race that doesn't mean shit about what the future holds...People need to cool their Jetts a bit.....
You do know the Deegan team is using this as an indicator for a1 or are you the dummy?
How the hell can you fry a clutch in fucking 7 minutes? Like just from a mechanical standpoint, I am surprised a factory clutch can be "cooked" in a 7 minute moto.
