Too bad you are about the 50th person to post that pic. Next thing you know you will break the story that Chad Reed is starting his own team and Christophe Pourcel doesnt have a factory ride yet, Way to go scoop!

I assume you meant to say "break the story"?

That was a GP race. Those aren't 350's in that picture Wink

Where were all those Alessi holeshots in the Lucas Oil AMA Motocross series this year? Sure didn't see a whole lot of them ..

Wasn't Alessi known as the "Holeshot Master" ... ?

If that pic gets posted about 187 more times, it should start to even out with all the 350 can't touch 450 threads.

Even if they were 350's overbored to 400 or 450, you have to give KTM credit for putting together an incredible machine - that's one hell of a holeshot.

Everyone talks about wanting to tear down the bike to find actual displacement. Wouldn't it be possible just to put the engine @ bdc pull the plug & see how much fluid it takes to fill the cylinder? I'm not into racing, so don't know the proceedure on that.

not much of a gauge there sparky,...the dude that won it was stuck in one gear for most of the moto. hell maybe they should just remove the other gears and save a few kilos and even make that 350 that much stronger

At most National tracks they would be in the first corner by that point of the start straight. Maybe the boys reaction time isn't what it used to be.

Why do people assume the bike - and mainly the motor - is all that produces a holeshot?

It's a combination of gate prep, chassis setup, tires, rider technique, reaction time, luck .... and rider confidence.

MA is not getting holeshots ... but he doesn't seem to be riding great in general. Riders have rather fragile mental states when they're not winning. Maybe it's the bike or maybe it's not.

But it's kinda hard to say only going by the results of a single guy.

Alessi has always gotten holeshots. If you gave that bike to LaRocco, then you he would have been way back in the pack.

So there you have it, BOTH of Alessi's good starts for 2010 posted in the same thread. That proves it beyond any doubt; 350's ARE faster than 450's!!!! I now have to admit it now based on this "new" evidence. How does KTM defy physics like that?

What does it say if we post those other 23 starts where he is getting roosted to hell? Especially that one where he has the jump and frame by frame you see the pack catch him and swallow him up?

I was pulling holeshots like crazy on my 350 this fall! The things a screamer!

Long's I got a decent jump I knew I was either going to be 1st or somewhere near it. I did it on dirt, concrete, and uphill starts. Most of the time all the way in second gear. Of course this is local B classes and not pro level...but it did it.

The real myth is the whole "you won't get tired" thing.THAT IS FALSE!

Between not riding much all summer and having to ride way more aggressive on the 350....We'll just say my arms didn't let me stay up front very long haha

David Pingree:
Bryce Vallee and I lined up side-by-side with the Kawasaki and the KTM 350 and did about six starts. The 350 was quicker in all but one of them. That was shocking. This is a great bike, and Alessi’s season last year was not indicative of what this bike is capable of.

Well, maybe it is a great starting bike. Maybe Short can make it happen.

They prove it's competitive. That or every single pro rider on those starting lines got shitty starts. I doubt there's anyone out there thinking, all I need to do is buy a 350 & I'll instantly be "faster". What "physics" do you refer to? I'd really like to see you show through physics that the 450 must be faster than the 350. If you could do it, those idiots over @ KTM should have done it a long time before they developed the 350.

It's not about being "faster", it's about being competitive. The rider is what makes it faster.

Mike has been getting holeshots for the last 100 years, than poof his prowess vanishes, but its only a coincidence that it coincided in losing a 100cc and 10 plus HP. Okydoky.

The stupid part is the next guy KTM hires is the new holeshot master, Shorty!...or was the holeshot master...and he will get destroyed in the short SX starts were the 350's power doesn't kick in until 9k, before that its just a slow 450.

It got good starts, and it got bad starts. Tony was awesome on it, mike wasn't. Maybe.... just MAYBE... it's not all about the bike? Maybe rider skill comes into play and mike just had a shit year?
