I really liked Weege and Langston, but Weege and Stew are a very close second.

In my early 20's I was honored to sit next to Larry Huffman in the booth and be his color analyst for the Houston SX a few times in the late 80's and early 90's. He was amazing and was very gracious to me. I learned a lot and still use a few of his one liners to this day when I announce a race, especially the "He's on him like a dog on a piece of meat!"

The GOAT! ART ECKMAN

ART-ECKMAN

Edit: Closest with the announcers we have today. Weege and Langston are the best. NBC needs to be cancelled for their treatment of Langston.

“ He’s as tough as a 2 dollar steak “ was one of my favorites. To you younger guys who didn’t get the experience , Larry was the voice you heard over the PA at the stadium. He definitely added to the atmosphere. He could make bagging groceries sound exciting. He had a talent for sure.

Did anyone else grow up listening to I think it was weigant do a verbal broadcast of the supercross's before we could watch them on tv or apps.

I used to boot the dial up up and every race seemed like there was a battle to the end. Mean while there was nothing going on. I didni't know that at the time. was very exciting. There was another site that you would have to read live texts on their website. Much like racerx does. But they were the only to live forms

I remember a guy named Chad Damiani started that with Jim Holley. We used to lounge in the living room and listen to them go!! They were great! Then for some reason unknown to me Chad was replaced with Weege and he was awesome too. But the Damiani/Holley sessions were epic!

He was the best Friday nights at Costa Mesa speedway. He could get away with a little more there than on tv.  "On him like a Krishna on an airport traveler" "Slipperier than a mayonnaise sandwich"  "Faster than a dog running through garden grove" "You win a years supply of condoms, ONE !" He had tons of one liners. He'd do the Huffman Hop and get the crowd riled up.  Good times 😄

I was looking for videos of the HOOOooooooollleeshooottt guys that announced the Canadian series and came across this race. "New guy Villopoto"  360 degree turn. This was a fun one to watch. If'n yer bored check it out 😉 I liked these guys. They just call the race like 2 enthused fans.

Weege and Langston were great, but I feel like Stew is more analytical about what he sees, goes a bit deeper. Hard to beat for MX.

I don't think Stew is as good for SX, because as someone said in a podcast somewhere (Weege maybe?), SX is very short times to get your point across, where as MX, you have more time and aren't as rushed, that's where Stew shines.

Bubbs??

Nothing says Core quite like using that term.

Asking Vital for some historical perspective is a great idea.

Yup, Costa Mesa Speedway!

I worked for Norm Reeves Honda in 1975 and 1976 and Larry was a friend of the family so he would stop by periodically and talk with all of us and crack us up. . One day he pulled the nose of his Ferrari into the stores double doors completely blocking the entrance, then he got out and walked across the hood of it to get into the store . We also had a booth at Speedway right where Larry was announcing so we got to see him in action up close. He would also occasionally go on trail rides with us, and he would be non stop . He had amzing energy, I miss seeing him.

Nice !  must’ve been a crack up to be around in real life. Friday night speedways were the best. Gene Gene the dancing machine walking the wall racing the drag truck, Larry getting the crowd into it. Turn 3 holding up numbered signs judging the talent walking by. Back then they had handicap racing which has disappeared. 6 guys, 6 laps, slowest guy starts on line, then the faster you are the further back you start, with the fastest guy on the 60 yard line. We still go to Costa Mesa Speedway. (for the eight rounds that are left anyway.) but it’s all scratch racing and isn’t as exciting as when they had the handicap races. I’m just glad it’s still happening and my grandkids get to experience it.
