This is why sports betting is a threat to the integrity of our sport.

Having a bad night? Maybe having a bad season overall? Eh, maybe just bet against yourself and "dab a knee on lap 6." Might be worth more than a win bonus.

We need to walk away from betting on our sport.

I'm not familiar with the moto betting scene. Are there bets for finishing better or worse than a certain position? Those could definitely be gamed if so. They just need to allow "win, place, and show" and holeshot bets only.

But it is ridiculous how gambling is ingrained in the big sports. You can't watch a game without odds being jammed down your throat in some way.

Who cares?  Sports were invented so people could have something to bet on.  The word Fan comes from Fancy, the rich people who would attend contests to make a wager.

This is an issue in all sports and the horse is not going back in the barn at this point so it is what it is

Integrity, honor, honesty, sportsmanship. These are qualities non-monetizable and so therefore almost completely without value in modern society. This specific issue is only one manifestation of the moral decay present in our world.

Integrity of MX? Might want to start with PEDs, sports betting in MX isn't big enough to be a major concern.

I can’t stand sports betting. It definitely had a negative impact on the athletes and the sport as a whole. The only one it truly benefits are companies who own the books. Baseball is really bad right now. Lots of death threats and threats against families of players because someone didn’t hit their 8 leg parlay. There’s also been multiple players suspended this year for gambling on baseball, which could get them a lifetime ban from MLB.

The riders in our sport already deal with enough for only a fraction of the pay they deserve. They don’t need more bullshit, just so ESPN can make another couple million off people placing losing bets that their favorite rider is going to holeshot, set the third fastest time of the night, snd finish higher than 6th.

i got screwed on Prados last race.  I bet on him not qualifying, he didnt and I was jumping up and down as I won big.  Then all the sudden he gets a provisional.
That was rigged every which way but loose.

Just doing what I do:

According to Webster:
Fan is generally–and very likely correctly–believed to be a shortened form of fanatic. The origin of fanatic (which can be traced back to the Latin word fanum, meaning “sanctuary, temple”) is less often commented on. In English, fan made an early appearance in the late 17th century only to disappear for two centuries, resurfacing in the late 19th century. In this later period of use, it often referred to the devoted observers of, or participants in, a sport. An 1885 article from The Kansas City Times, for example, contains the line “The base ball ‘fans’ of the ploice [sic] force and fire department engage in a ball game.”

Moto is just way too small for sports gambling. There are too many insiders shielding information for there to be an "honest" line (if thats even a thing) on any of the bets. I've gambled on other sports and spent alot of time in casinos near where I grew up. Sports gambling in general is filled to the BRIM with TERRIBLE lines. Don't think its going away anytime soon, though. Way too much $ invovled and now laws being put in place to allow it.

It's got to be nearly impossible to pinpoint the invention and use of language in history.

I'm partial to the Fancy origin story because contests and betting were happening long before Baseball was invented and the Fanatic origin is mostly aligned with Baseball writers.

Why do you think Prado suck so bad this season and try to not qualify at last race 😛

Why is everyone such a degenerate that everything in life needs to be able to be bet on?

Death

In that order, and in perpetuity.

You are right about etymologies being hard to parse. This is one such example. I had never heard of the idea of being "one of the fancy." That's a great insight.

Nonsense

"the fancy" for a group of enthusiasts

I think you need to understand how Brits use the word “fancy”

The player named in the article was making $250k per game and got $70k for taking that dive. Why?

in the Brazilian Soccer championship, this guy got a red card in less than 3 seconds

Notice how he tried to hit one guy, then moved on to the second fella.

BETTING... and this is one of the big teams

I’m surprised that no one has linked Sexton’s mysterious goggle issue with this…….

mid 16th century (as an adjective): from French fanatique or Latin fanaticus ‘of a temple, inspired by a god’, from fanum ‘temple’. The adjective originally described behavior that might result from possession by a god or demon, hence the earliest sense of the noun ‘a religious maniac’ (mid 17th century).

It has no place in motorsports of any sort.
