I didn’t want to derail a thread this subject came up on so, I figured I would ask you guys.
Yesterday I headed to a river I normally fish this time of year. There’s usually a few people out but, it’s always been easy to get away from them by walking a little further.
My friend and, I found a little island to fish from so, we set up. About thirty minutes later I could see a group of headlamps coming down in the dark. The first group set up above us. About 60’ away. The next group of about 6 people set up below us. Group 1 decided to start a fire. The smoke from old drift wood and, decaying timber smelled like shit. As it got light out, I could see about 30 people we were in the middle of. With more people walking down the trail and, headed our way.
After about ten minutes of fishing another group of 3 parked their ass’ next to us. It’s always been person downstream cast first then, the next guy up from him casts to avoid tangling lines. Then the next. Nope. These fuckers were casting out of order. Tangling up with everyone and, after a few hours of putting up with this shit and, stinky ass smoke we decided to move. I knew a little stretch nobody had ever fished so, we headed there. Mother fucker was full of people as well.
I decided to call it and, started digging online once I got home. Sure enough. I found a guy on TikTok had posted a fucking map with directions. Then I found a Facebook group dedicated to this river. Posting pics and, pin locations as well.
How pissed would you be to find this and, what has social media ruined for you?
Social media has ruined my rose colored glasses view of the quality of American character.

I'm not super active hunting but I do know it is a problem where people will post a pic of some nice deer they had taken with a big backdrop showing the landscape where the animal was killed. Without posting the name of the area, people figure out where the huge deer was taken because some known peak is in the background. The next years hunting season rolls around and there is a noticeable increase in hunter pressure.
But...i guess I am blissfully unaware as I am not on any social media to know what is going on.
And...i don't know how you do it Chance, I'm talking about the combat fishing. Its just not fun for me. Maybe its because I'm a bit anti social, live out in the sticks away from people.
Google earth is used to find landmarks a lot of times. I’ve used it to navigate new rivers looking for sections that look like they’d hold fish. Then drive out and, look at the location regardless of the distance. The unfortunate side is, the rivers change every year with the rain and, flooding. Google Earth is about 2 years behind.
Now, just open a TiKTok account and, type in a river name. There’s no footwork involved. A lot of places I’d fish in the past, I’d have to use a machete to blaze a trail.
I’m leaning towards spending more time spear fishing next year. I might not be able to target salmon but, I still like lingcod and, rockfish.

Public interaction in general. From socializing at concerts to just nights out at a bar or restaurant. No one seems to be able to just enjoy the moment live.
The other day I found a great place to fish on tictok, They even showed me what gear to use. We got there early and set up a fire because it was cold. After a while it got light and there was some crotchety old fuck down stream. Just ruined the whole day for me.

In all seriousness, not social media story. But I know how you feel. Got my first JetSki in 79. Used to ride off the beach in Carlsbad. It was right next to "warm water jetty" (in you know old Carlsbad) and that's where they used to launch all the Hobie Cats. Then the LA guys found out we were riding in the surf and they came and ruined it. So us locals started riding off Pendleton and kept that quiet as long as possible. Yup, The OC and LA riders found out and today it's a quite famous place to ride. But the days of riding surf in Carlsbad was some of the best memories ever!
Sort of on topic , there's an old trick people in the northeast do to protect their favorite hunting spots on state land. You walk 50 feet into the woods from the parking area and throw down a bunch or rubs and scrapes ,most hunters will never ignore that sign and will set up immediately. You could always join this Facebook group and share a bunch of BS GPS points .
I haven't really noticed it ruin anything for me except for the amount of time I spend scrolling on Instagram. You see one bob Ross AI video ,you want to see them all it turns out.
There was an old site that gave fishing reports about 12 years ago. I had myself and, several friends locally, as well as other states log in. We created fake accounts to give fake reports. This river sucks. The run must be over. Was at blank river yesterday and, it’s way better fishing. It worked for several years.
Now, you can go to hatchery escapement reports and see, how many fish have returned on most rivers.
I don't know if it ruined things, but it sort of revealed some things.......!
I've got about a thousand cousins it seems like (both parents were from big families; Mom was 10th of 11 and Dad was 7th of 8) and when I was younger my mom's siblings always had at least one 'reunion' a year at our house, so we all knew each other pretty well. We all grew up to be a pretty broad, diverse group of adults who probably are spread equally across the political spectrum, maybe leaning slightly to the right.
During the 2016 election, we had this one cousin who completely freaked out and even started threatening some of the others over some family Facebook political discussions. It was bizarre. This cousin does have a closed head injury that he got discharged from the Marines over, but he lied about how it happened and collects a 100% disability from the government. But he was always a hot head, even before the head injury.
He's the type of guy that you sort of always worry about in the back of your mind that he might flip even more and come after a family member that he got into a disagreement with. Even with the people who are close to him in ideology, if he doesn't feel that they are supportive enough of his rants.
Thankfully we've been able to sort of shut him out of any of our gatherings. I think that we all knew he was pretty unstable but didn't realize that it was as bad as that.

My Dad always took me hunting in city limits, non of the kooks ever thought to hunt there. Hell one Christmas morning we went deer hunting at the woods besides the mall. New neighborhoods being built, the rock quarry. We've had to run from Wardens and cops, but that makes it fun.
Facebook Marketplace is terrible.
Well overcrowding the desert is one. Ocotillo has gone from a riding area to a full blown party zone with gps coordinates to every cool area that used to be hard to find. Relationships, we have some friends who get so involved in right vs left and pro Donald vs fuck Donald that some of them don't talk anymore. Except to argue online of course. Plus the fact that people say shit online they would never say to someone face to face.
AI clips on social media. A lot of times I can't tell if it's fake or real? Now I question everything. I don't know if AI is getting that much better or my age is showing and I'm only 44. 😂
Texting ruined this as well, but phone calls. I miss calling and talking to stay in touch.
I try to call people as much as possible.

Not necessarily social media but media in general has really ruined my trust in pretty much anything I read or hear. Clickbait headlines and lack of context have clouded people’s sense of community and our neighbors have become enemies. I have to say gents, that is one of the most dangerous things that can happen to a country, I am guilty of it and so are most of you. Also Montana has become overrun with “Yellowstone” watchers and that’s all I’ll say about that. Haha
Shit, where do I start.
-Like you mentioned, local spots for anything cool getting blown up, shared, shut down.
-The effect it has on younger people and perception that others have a lot more than they have (or more happiness).
-The fact it's made people dumber since some believe anything they see.
-AI in general. Some people are giving up with reality. They can just see videos of what they want to see or make themselves look how they want.
