I have two 1976 Yamaha YZ175C and one YZ125X. I would post a picture, but I just can't figure it out.

There are a couple ways, but if you got them on your computer you can use photobucket.

I rdoe the YZ175 in two 250 Nationals in '76. Houston and Georgia. Qualified fith in Houston right behind Hannah. Did not qualify in Ga after Gary Jones passed in the LCQ on the last lap. Pretty trick bike. We patterened the top end after the TZ700 road race bike Yamaha had out back then. We copied the port shapes and timing of the 700. We had Jemco (Houston) match the 700 exhaust pipe in an upswept style (like stock). I think we use the ignition from the 700 and we also used the carb off the 700. If you are following what I'm saying, the thing was 1/4 of the 700 rode racer. It had so much compression it would only run with the water cooled head from Shinobi. We also used the old 5 speed lower end from '74. I have a pic from Houston showing Weinert and Stackable behind me.

You do realize that certain local riders have their home track wired don't you? There are a lot of big names throughout the history of mx that have gotten their asses chapped by fast local expert/pro riders. Also at Rio, there was a local kid on YZ80's that showed Ward and Myerscough the fast way around the track. Shaun Kelly ring any bells?

My brother raced them.

It was called the 200cc Class and it was considered an expert class (AMA and NML)

Can-Am also made a 175 for that class, but the YZ's dominated it

How'd ya know she was nasty.....those play doctor days, eh....Wink

Sue Wood passed my dumbass....shoulda quit right then instead of thinking I could be a racer...

Husky did have a 175 that think was offshoot of 125 cr...

Think about it when in the old days we had all 'dem choices of bikes to ride....seemed like every other kid had some sort of bike or minibike to ride...and endless places to ride..

I guess it depended on who was riding the Can-Am. David Dula did pretty well on them way back there. My first 'race' bike was a '74 MX 175 Yami. Great bike.

Back in the day AMA District 37 had a 200cc class in TT Scrambles and in the Desert.

I remember those YZ 175's from 1976. I had a 1976 YZ 125 X.
There were no 1977 YZ 175's but....... There were IT 175's.
Back in the day at Dade City, when Randy Yoho was a racer and not the owner.
He raced a 1977 YZ 125 with an IT 175 top end.
There was a 0-200cc pro class and an open pro class.
Randy took home the money in both classes many nights there.

Also back in the day at Golden Eagles in Tampa. They called it District 8 Scrambles but it was all mx bikes. All but one that is. Robert "Gordy" Gordon on a 175 Bultaco Astro.
I was about 15 the first time I saw him whoop the 175 class on that thing. I asked my friend ,who I had come to the races to watch, what's that funny noise the bike makes when he gets to this sharp turn ? It was a compression release. The Bultaco had right side shift and he could slide through that turn, foot down, braking with the comp release, and shifting up out of the turn, all at what seemed like the same time.
The 175 class faded out in MX around that time.

Back in the day the "Hot" set-up was to use a TD-1 right side cylinder and head along with the exhaust pipe and carb on your AT1-MX, it was very peaky but worked well for TT's and Short track but did hear of several being run on the wide open tracks like Carlbad and some GP's also.

Back in around 1980-'81 A top desert racer I went to high school with (Sylmar High) named Cliff Thomas (so did Kenji Gauthier, Thomas Willis, Greg Johnston.. holy CRAP our school pumped out some FAST desert experts) anyway from what I remember, he used to race IT175's as his premiere race bikes, wide ratio trans? but could set up raceable suspension, swap YZ cylinders/stuff etc. etc?.. all I know is he was FAST fast on it. now are these motors that yamaha used in the yz 175 the same basic motor that got used in the rt 180 and blaster?
