Hoping to get some feedback back on humerus repair and recovery

Snapped it back in April aswell as my wrist...
No plate or screws...back together

Wondering how long it takes for bone to harden?

I feel 75% but the jar/shock of hitting it is still pretty tender

6 months? Im starting to get the itch to ride again..I'm happy to sit out for a few more months but hoping to hear of others times frames. No rush.

In my 40's...physically fit.

Thanks

Back in July of 1978 I broke mine. It was a compound fracture so they put a rod in mine.  Broke it in July and they did surgery to take the pin out in November and I was back riding in January. Orthopedic surgeon gave me the all clear to get back to riding again. I did a couple of weeks play riding then got a brand new 1979 RM400 and started back racing again.

I broke mine in 1996, so I can’t really remember!

But, like any injury, your nerves in the area will be damaged, and it’s never a guarantee that they will fully recover. Every injury is different so nobody can give you a definitive answer.

like a lot of people, I’ve had many many injuries.
My broken femur (1999) never gives me any problems.
But my ACL replacement (2022) still tingles when I run my fingers down my shin. I’ve accepted the fact it may feel like that forever.

It will feel a lot better once it stops hurting.

I broke mine at Perris in 1999. No surgery, just an air cast, sling and 6 months off the bike. Showering was a real motherfucker until the bone had actually set and it wasn't just two pieces banging around against each other.

I fractured mine in w Tx. Oil field . My hand swelled up like a grizzly bear paw for a 3 days . On the 3rd day I had X-rays it showed a fracture across it. . So 3 days no work then back at it.  It was sore for 6-9 months I think

That far out, bone should be healed and not the thing that is causing you pain. If you're still having pain you may want to get some more xrays to make sure you actually healed up and didn't get non union. If bone looks good ask for physical therapy referral.

Showering !?!?, what about wiping your ass. Injuries really can help with becoming ambidextrous. Don't bother asking me how I know.

People don't tell you how bad this break hurts. Worst recovery I've ever had. It's a huge bone that takes a long time to heal properly and your arm goes to shit while it's healing. Worry less about getting on the bike and more about building back your muscle. Your arm will atrophy so much in 4 months that you'll need 2 to 3+ months to workout off the bike before even trying to do real riding.

When you do get to lift again, do the one thing they say not to in moto, curls. Also, lots of rows. You have to rebuild the tricep and bicep properly first.

Broke the humerus ball in 3 pieces and dislocated it out the back. Had to have a screw and a big washer to hold all 3 pieces together. Worst part was I stretched everything in my shoulder and couldn’t move my fingers for 6 weeks. I was good enough to ride at  5 months. They never checked for soft tissue damage and now my shoulder is falling apart 8 years later. It’s really never stopped hurting but I’ve dealt with it.  I’ll probably be having surgery again soon.

This!

Dude my left tricep is all but gone...I'm amazed looking in the mirror.

I've absolutely blown myself to bits over the years but this one hurt like hell.Im in this shitty spot of thinking I can do things then realise nope, not quite there yet

Can I ask what you started with in gym? There's still some resistance and pain there when attempting to do what I used to in our home gym but I'm wondering if I should try and push through it and if by doing that will that pain recede or will i essentially inflame it.

I feel like my mobility is there..or as good as it's going to be with a seperated shoulder above it but I'm curious on the weight lifting...I want to get it better but don't want to go backwards.

Was thinking start with 5lb/10lb stuff and see how we go

I broke mine and with no surgery I tried riding in 8 weeks, but it was too early because of muscle atrophy. I hit the gym hard for four weeks and was good after that. The bone never hurt, but my whole arm and shoulder hurt during and after riding soI had to just ride through it.

I didn’t get arthritis, but the tendinitis is a killer.

I shattered the ball of my shoulder off my humerus. Part of the bone that broke was where the rotator cuff attaches too. I had a plate, and a bunch of screws put in, to re-align the shoulder ball and had my rotator cuff pinned to the plate. 1 Day after a 5-hour surgery I was at the PT office, arm out of the sling and started on PT. Took about 2 months for my rotator cuff to start to work again. It was such a weird feeling not being able to rotate my arm in our out. But one day my body figured it out and I was able to move is a little bit more day by day. At 3-4 months in I was riding my mountain bike around the block and 6 months in I was back on the dirt bike. The key to all this was to take PT very seriously. I had 2 PT appointments a week that were about an hour and a half long plus I did about an hour a day of workouts on my own every day no matter what.

After a few months of riding, I was almost back to 100%. I still struggle with yanking bars up toward my chest with my bad arm (more of a problem for mountain biking) and it's harder to push back up away from the bars when it an aggressive attack position, but you sort of figure out how to adapt.

Shoulder is still sore somedays, and I can't really lift anything over my head with my bad arm. Deff gets annoying sometimes.

No, it went away after I was back in shape. My elbow developed tendinitis, not sure if that’s from the injury, but that does hurt some times, but not while riding.
