Loretta’s: Hottest Week Every Year

Why is this event not in October? I understand tradition and the grit to make it through but I don’t understand why it happens through the hottest week of the year in the south.  There used to be more prominent spring and fall nationals but many of them don’t exist.  Even early September at the end of MX?

The parents have to get home and couple weeks before the kids go back to school for clothes shopping and school supplies.

Well October is during the school year and busy season for lots of businesses. Summer months are vacation months for both.
You also have the portion of riders who want to hit the nationals after LL which a later date would hurt.

Hardly any of these kids are in public school anymore

Yeah the majority of these kids are not in public school.  We used to race Branson National in October and it was packed.  A lot of upper middle class American families pull their kids out of school for a week at a time to travel.  Pretty common compared to the 70s or 80s when Loretta’s began

I’d imagine the safety concern of the heat supersedes kids missing a handful of school days

Why change it when it routinely makes truck loads of money?

It fits with the promoter's schedule, the landowner schedule, and apparently it's good for attendees as well.

School schedule is irrelevant with most other big races, including Areas, Regionals, and other National level races  held during the school year.

It does work with the National schedule though and if it was during SX would create all kinds of problems, so late fall is the clear answer....but then you are encroaching on Mini O's too and extending the training for these kids almost the whole year.

I find it interesting we blame not having a National in the SE on heat......but I believe that has far more to do with ticket sales than it does riders/teams.....and there is no shortage of attendance at the Ranch and spectators are not the revenue stream like they are in the pros

The opposite is  -15 with 35 mph wind if your jetting in close to being good on that temp .  You ride the ice but not for long or not at all.

First time here and it’s just like everyone says it is. Hot, humid, and zero breeze. Just washing his bikes has been miserable. You’re instantly soaking wet with sweat when you try and do anything. Guess I’ll be able to say we were here but personally I’m looking forward to never doing it again.

Over the years this race has been moved back roughly 2 weeks.  I live less than 2 hours from the ranch in West Tennessee and every year when it was in August it always seemed to cool off that week just in time for the race.  Tomorrow’s high here is forecast at 82, much better than the last 2 weeks under the “heat dome”.  The high all next week is only 89, but I know that’s something they can’t predict months in advance when they set the schedule.  August will still be hot, it’s just always a little less hot than July!

We've been here for 2 weeks and the heat index has consistantly been 103-109.  And it feels like it.  We were here last year and it seems a tick hotter this year.  I trained for it and expected it and it doesnt really effect me for the most part,  but it's just a relentless heat that you get tired of dealing with.

They actually cut laps from the later motos on Wednesday and we also had 2 lightning delays today  Seems like after the lightning strike at Spring A Ding they (the AMA) are taking weather safety issues more seriously.

Speaking of safety, since they already banned pit bikes, surrons and talaria's the next thing will be golf carts..   the place is a complete shlt show with kids driving around like they are racing on the track, kids jumping from cart to cart as they drive down the road, 10 kids on one cart, others playing bumper cars, one big long line of chaos through the pits.   It's terrible...  that or I am just that old guy now.

Schools are in session in October typically, most of the kids go to conventional schools.

You are 100% correct. Insurance problems are killing the sport and I’ve seen more than a few times this week kids being completely out of control in carts and side x sides. Watched a kid almost rear end a pickup because he wasn’t paying attention. The racers can’t even get back to their pits to get cooled down without fighting a line of them. Add in the fact we got kids and moto dads test riding bikes 4th tapped through the pits when there’s literally a burnout area? We watched a kid on a 65 rip by our RV 8 times yesterday while his family stood there watching him. One truck or golf cart backs out and he would’ve flown 100 yards. Counting down to the last moto here and our tires hit the pavement.

Long as you're in heat shape and have the ability to cool down properly, ain't no thing for most part.

The heat and humidity are no joke at LL.  Every year it claims a few.  I get a little pissed when people take the "just train harder" angle on it.  If you weren't aware, it bit Leum Oehlhof pretty hard in the first 250 Pro Sport Moto on Tuesday.  He was running, I think 2nd, and apparently heat stroked right at the white flag and went down in a pretty ugly crash.  He's the son of a former Pro rider and likely lives and trains at a facility in the south humidity every day.  If you don't think he and his family know every thing there is to know about preparing for the heat, I don't know what to tell you.  The point is, it can bite anyone, no matter how prepared you think you are.  It bit Keefer hard last year.  Pretty sure he knows his way around the heat also.  The controversy this year is that they extended the Pro Sport motos from 20 to 25 minutes.   Be safe out there folks.

I del at noon sat in May a few miles outside of New Orleans do the trl & ran around a bit.  Strip mall ts had a Smoken hot blonde 49 yr old looks like a 23 yr old bartender I noticed her legs& butt 1st then she turns around 44 dd flat stomach. She says the same as I do hotter & muggier the better .  We clicked & had super fun time laughing her x is from s bend , she hated that weather .  I bailed hay for 5 farmers as a kid I always got the Mauw. Hv to wear a thick flannel shirt or tear your skin up, yrs later the big hhg rig you hv 1,200 degrees from 2 industrial engines , 8x8 mud pump below ya , partial returns of drilling fluid will burn your hands. Then sprint ripping 50 or 100 lbs .  Houston to Miami we drilled 1 yr phase 3 biggest construction project in the world .  The heat & humidity fires me up LL heat is nowhere as hot as Louisiana.
