Didn't Reed get his lens knocked out this year?

I remember Dungey having trouble a few races ago with his googles (Red Bud?) and couldn't pass the leaders. I believe Short won that moto.

Yesterday Nick Wey got a rock to the eye!

Didn't Wilbur or Hahn get a rock in the eye too?


Would you be against racing with a road race style sheild? Those could look pretty cool its just motocrossers are so set in their ways on how a motocrosser should look that it would never happen.

Agreed. I was thinking the same.
All it takes is Oakley and Dungey to run them and win races with it. Now it probably won't happen.

Obviously when you were lurking you didn't happen to stumble across that sticky thread titled "Vital MX Posting Rules".

There's a little paragraph in there about spelling, punctuation, drinking before typing Blink . That sort of thing.

If in doubt spelling the word goggle, simply google the word goggle and google will help you along........I do it all the time when spelling words I learned in the 2nd grade, but haven't used them since the 9th grade.

a shield like that wouldnt be good if roost got on it...it would play with your depth perception unlike a goggle wich is really close to your eyes the sheild is far away.

The reason for using the current goggles is the way they work: they "seal" the eyes' area to protect them from dust, roost, etc. A conventional helmet with integrated shield just wouldn't work with the specific needs in motocross or pretty much any other offroad sport.

To fix the lens-popping issues: Make the goggle reps earn their money! The first thing that comes to my mind is using a very small drill bit and screws to keep the lenses in place. I bet there are even better and cheap fixes.

The biggest hurdle for the full face shield to get over, and the reason why they are not worn in MX, is that they fog on the inside from perspiration and respiration (not to mention saliva and snot).



No way around it. That's why the Snowcross guys wear MX helmets and goggles when there are plenty of good full face snowmobile helmets out there with full-face shields. They simply do not work when it gets physical.

Couldnt they just run a little thin bead of silicone around the whole outer edge of the lens, sealing it to the frame? Been way to many "my lens popped out" deals.

Thanks for the comment. Thanks for reminding me goggles function as a “seal”.
I agree 100 percent the lens should be screwed into the frame.

Maybe even glued into the frame since they are a one time use item. Maybe the frame needs more tabs to secure the lens? Or strong tabs?

Thanks for your response. I have never used a shielded helmet so I am unaware of the moisture issues with the shield.

First thing I would do is probably spray antifog on the shield but I guess everyone has tried that already.

I can see how the condensation on the shield would splash into the riders faces when landing off a triple or hitting the whoops.

I guess the shielded helmet is not the answer.

Gluing would be one solution. I'm pretty sensitive to smell and the smell of the glue may effect my eyes and sinuses. It's worth a try. And when does the screws or glue start effecting how the tear off seats inside the goggle frame?

A new design with a more rigid lens and frame combo seem like they would be the ticket. With all the goggle failures recently, I would imagine something is in the works.

Who made a goggle like that back in the 70's, early 80's? Was it Castre? The lens was more rigid and precurved, like old Oakley Blades lenses.

The slotted holes around the edge of the lens, (that the pins lock into) would need to go away, and simply be holes. A supporting frame around the perimeter of the lens that goes on over the lens, then smalls screws holding it all together.

Sounds like it would be less flexible, less comfortable, heavier and cost a lot more, not to mention making lens changes more complicated and time consuming for the average consumer. But a high buck option for the serious racer...

Remember "Jones" goggles? they had a display at Ponca in '81 where they had a .22 gun set up and you could fire it into the lens.

Some of these goggle companies need to take a little less time at designing these fugly colors and address this lens issue. Remember how pissed RC was when he had to toss his goggles at i think Budds Creek while in a full on war with James.
