Didn’t the world champ only win one moto his first year here? Is Mikkel on Tom’s level?

Tom won 3 motos and an overall last year. But hasn't exactly ridden like himself either. Haarup smoked him at mxdn. Also hymas, Shimoda, Masterpool all won motos. Those are similar to Haarups level.

Won't be easy but if he gets along well with a track and with some luck he can win a moto

Last year was his 2nd year here. His first year in the nationals he won 1 moto at southwick and went 1-3 for the overall.

Walker is a great all rounded rider. I enjoy his content. He hauls on that track.

Right. Somehow missed "first year here" in your comment 😏

Was Tom’s factory KTM that much more better in Europe compared to his US spec bike? I think that probably has played a part in why he hasn’t won that much outdoors in the US.

100%. Hymas might be our only shot at keeping this summer not a total bore from Deegan domination. Unless Davies is some kind of revelation. I don't see it first year though

No, he rode his US bike at the MXON Ernee for example where he smoked everyone and looked just like back in MX2.
I just think it's a combination of shifting his focus more towards SX, while also still not being super comfortable with the new schedule maybe. There is a big difference between having the whole winter/off season to ride motocross or only having 2-3 weeks. Obviously it's the same for everyone in the US, so that's not an excuse, but maybe he does have a bigger problem acclimating somehow.

Also he wasn't really slow last year.. Just whenever he was leading he was somehow crashing and throwing it away, still ended up 2nd overall. Did everyone expect more out of him in MX? Yea sure, but it's not like his season was a complete failure.

It usually takes time for riders coming over to the US to adjust to the nationals because they don't get a lot of time to learn the tracks, that aside however I think this series suits Haarup well.

Haarup usually has the speed of the top guys in the GPs, but not the start, which is more of a problem in the GPs than the AMA nationals because the tracks in the GPs are usually one lined and hard to pass on compared to the AMA series

He raced Shoals MX over the weekend, too. Funny the difference in Euro riders, who always seem to be looking to get real gate drops in, versus American riders who just ride at training facilities

Why?  A great opportunity for the local pro to find out where he stands against national level comp.

I had RJ show up at Indian Dunes in 1979 with his trick Cliff Lett built YZ125 and run against us in the 125 pro class...  This was the year he shot on to the scene at the national level.  I remember coming back in after the first moto and my dad was beside himself...  Turns out I was the only 1 not lapped by RJ in the moto.  I was 3/4 of a lap down though....  🤣

I think it's awesome that he's running races to get used to the US race format and culture.

Butt hurt over what? He's a professional racing in the professional class.

Or is it somehow different because he's a professional on a team and earns a living racing a dirt bike?

Line up, get the holeshot, and try and stick with him for as long as you can once he blows by you.

That's really cool you got to race RJ at a local race at the age he was. Great memory I'm sure.

I see his city of residence on the entry form is a tiny town in Georgia.  Guessing it is close to the Triumph test track, talk about culture shock, lol

I think he’ll be 4-9 maybe a few better races but getting a podium on all new tracks will be tough

Right. He raced the pro class. I guarantee the fans at the race didn't care, either. They were stoked to see a high level pro throw down. Doug Henry showed up at a local NESC race with his factory Honda in '93 and we were losing our minds.

The parents should be pumped their kids are getting to race a high level pro at a local race. They were probably upset because it was a Loretta’s regional qualifier tho. Mike Alessi would always use the Glen Helen REM races to warm up and other pros as well like DeanO in his PC days. Rattray raced REM races too I believe.

Your brush with greatness is a millions  times better then mine. 🙃

I stood next to Roger Decoster as he looked back at the tower at Washougal in 90' when "skin to win" happened, where they were auditioning for a trophee girl and a couple of chicks decided to start lifting their top.

Triumph Factory Racing is excited to announce that Mikkel Haarup has joined its US race team for the upcoming 2025 AMA Pro Motocross Championship. With his extensive experience of competing in MXGP, and with Jalek Swoll sidelined through injury until later in the year, Mikkel will race the TF 250-X in the 250 Class this summer.

Thanks to his development role with Triumph, Haarup has been based at the team’s state-of-the-art training facility in Georgia, USA for a number of months. The Danish racer has been offered the opportunity to get back behind the start gate, and he is now busy preparing for his first assault on the AMA series while familiarising himself with the US-spec TF 250-X machine. The 23-year-old will utilise the time in the championship to stay race sharp, before returning to his testing role.

Haarup joined Triumph for its inaugural season in the FIM MX2 Motocross World Championship last year, giving the British manufacturer a number of top five results and a historic first Grand Prix podium at the opening round of the series. Mikkel enjoyed a strong year, concluding the season fifth in the standings.

The unique opportunity to race the outdoors is a childhood dream come true for Mikkel, who is naturally excited for the season ahead. Before the Pro Motocross tour begins, the Dane will compete in lower-profile events to fully prepare himself aboard the TF 250-X in a racing environment, having last ridden competitively at the Motocross of Nations back in October. Mikkel’s first outing with the team will be a Loretta Lynn’s qualifier event in South Carolina this weekend.

Mikkel Haarup

“First of all, I’m super excited for this opportunity. It’s always been a dream of mine to race in the US, and to be able to do it with a team that I trust and on a bike that I love to ride is just perfect. Of course, it means I am stepping away from my development role for now, but it continues in safe hands with Clement Desalle and Ivan Tedesco continuing the work. My expectations for the season are hard to say. It’s a new racing format for me and there are different rules with the bikes, but overall, the initial goal is to improve round by round. From there, the goals may change after a few races. Round one is not far away now and I can’t wait to get started.”

Jeremy Coker – General Manager, Triumph Racing America

“The addition of Mikkel to our team for Pro Motocross is really exciting – not only for us, but for the series – as it’ll have another rider from MXGP on the start line. Mikkel has been with us for a few months now and he’s been great to work with, and testing has been going really well. When the outdoor season starts, I’m looking forward to seeing what he can do, and it should be a great summer of racing.”

Ian Kimber – Head of Global Racing Programmes, Triumph Motorcycles

“Having Mikkel based in the US for his 450 development role has put us in a unique position. We’ve been able to utilise his skills and experience to the benefit of our American racing programme, as well as continuing to develop our 450 machine. The 2025 AMA Supercross season has been tough, and heading into Pro Motocross, we won’t have our full line-up of riders competing until later in the season. With that in mind, we’ve drafted Mikkel into the Triumph Factory Racing team for the Pro Motocross series in the 250 Class, which has a lot of benefits for all involved. We’ve been able to take our time, get him used to the US-spec bike, and develop his set-up, so he’ll be fully prepared going into the season. Keeping him race-sharp is important, and he also brings a closer connection between our US and MXGP racing programmes. I’m super excited to see how Mikkel progresses this summer, and I know first-hand that his input will be invaluable for the team. The experience will be great for him, and we’re all looking forward to seeing him on the start gate later this year.”

Triumph needs to learn to Capitalize US!

Otherwise, good news for MX.
