Why don’t teams use Evan’s Waterless Coolant for mud races?

After watching tons of riders DNF and struggle to keep bikes alive during the Foxborough SX, I was curious why more teams don’t run Evan’s Waterless Coolant for extreme mud conditions. It seems like it would be the move, but I’m probably missing some key info.

Any ideas?

The problem with waterless coolant is you don't really know when it is at the overheating point enough to damage an engine.  Waterless coolant simply has a much higher boiling point than normal coolant.  As a rider focused on the race they really don't pay attention to the bike being hot.  Even though waterless coolant isn't blowing steam doesn't mean that other parts aren't about to fail in an ugly way.  So if your rider's bike is steaming out there the mechanic can pit board signal to him to ease up.  Also, when they are steaming for a while and then finally quit steaming you know it's about to let go as there isn't any water left to cool it.

Evan’s just takes a little longer to boil over, it doesn’t cool any better than any other type of coolant. In those conditions the only thing helping the bike cool would be keeping the radiators free of obstruction, but good luck with that.

It doesn’t cool any better, but you’d think having some coolant in there vs. boiling it all out would still buy you more time. Maybe not though.

This is the stuff that I consistently use in all of my machines over the waterless style of coolant.  BUT know that Engine Ice freeze protection is only good to about -5 below zero.  SO if you live in an area like mine we see -30 in the winter.  Engine ice isn't good for that UNLESS you store your machines in a heated garage.

Yes and no, like I said earlier, steam is a visual sign that "oh shit, she's getting hot" VS. the internal failures when there is just too much heat.  I've see head gasket failures with Evans coolant combined with a higher pressure rad cap like almost all the teams run.  Higher BAR pressure is higher coolant pressure which leads to other things giving up.  That means, your race is over immediately where sometimes the rider can ease up when it's steaming to at least get to the finish.

When you don’t boil your coolant, you’re transferring all that stress from the heat to the gaskets, seals, and internals of your engine instead of letting the coolant steam off.

Correct, but if you are a pro racing at the highest level, and waterless coolant can buy you ANY amount of time in those types of conditions, I would imagine you would want any competitive advantage you could get, no?

I 100% get if for the average weekend warrior. Just thinking of the top guys in the sport.

That all makes sense. I wouldn’t run it in any other situations but I know it’s popular at the GNCCs. Sounds like the teams like the visual indication that the bike’s over heating and they need to back it down.

I am pretty sure the more water your coolant has in it the more heat it can carry. Also the water boiling takes a lot of heat out with the steam. If anything they might be better off running straight water.

Why dont they hook up an expansion tank, like the beach racers run.

Because that would be too easy.

I believe pro circuit has done this in the past I've seen Billet overflow tanks on their bikes

A bike can still go a bit of distance after it burns off all the coolant in the system before it cooks itself. If an internal hard part in the engine fails, you’re left where you’re standing.

Because a coolant expansion tank does absolutely nothing if the bike never cools off.

Big ol off-road fan kits and panty hose over the rads.

I'm pretty sure in some forms of car racing they do run straight water for the purpose you pointed out.  Also, because of spills on the pavement, but for heat carrying properties as well.  Obviously they aren't worried about internal corrosion at that level.  It's all about performance.

Yep, specific heat capacity of straight water is better than the waterless coolants. Now that's only one part of the whole system but it's arguably the most important. I'm surprised no one runs a fan, but it was neat to see the super trick oil cooler setup on the HRC bike at Foxborough

Yeah no one is thinking about internal corrosion on an engine that is torn down after every race and probably doesn’t have coolant in it for more than a couple of days at a time.

If propylene glycol was better than ethylene glycol the oems would run it stock. It's not, they don't, but marketing works wonders.

Those type of mud races kill motors, there is no fix other than running the event under a closed stadium.

SX was brought into stadiums so that fan could sit in comfort whilst watching racing.

The series needs to honor that and host races in closed stadiums...for all fans to enjoy

Sitting in a fucking expensive seat in the rain...fuck that!

Most of them do use it in mud races

Dave and I have talked about this before and the problem isn’t the steaming. They can steam for a long time and be fine. If the steaming stops that is the problem of a melt down. Dave has always said in very extreme conditions like a really bad mud GNCC to run evens. It does not boils out because it is all chemical and zero water but at some point the motor can still melt down.

Dave doesn’t know why but Dave was banned from Vital after he sold EI. He has asked why multiple times and they will not answer why.

Dave still occasionally reads what’s going on on race days or after races but that is it. He has moved on.

Dave is happily retired on a Daytona golf course and playing golf.

Thanks for the insight. I can definitely see a benefit to using Evans during extreme mud races, maybe not regularly though.
