'Liberation Day' tariff announcements

Why are tariffs considered a tax paid by consumers, but corporate and excise taxes are not?

id argue excise taxes are paid by consumer as well,  as they are on a cost or quantity bases, ,  corporate taxes are on profit,

The US and Australia has a free trade agreement, with a very few type of goods excluded by mutual agreement.
Not that I think a perfect trade balance is important, however for what it’s worth the US enjoys a trade surplus.

Yet, we have now been hit with a 10% tariff on all goods and a 25% tariff on steel and aluminum.

I don’t understand the rational on this, and I don’t buy the “reciprocal” argument. You say they are for the “goal of fair trade”, yet I would argue we had a very fair trade deal. So what is the point of the tariff in the case of trade with Australia?

These won’t really have a huge impact on our economy. However the general global upheaval will have a huge impact.

Like I said, it sucks

It's a tax on US consumers, there would be rioting in the streets if their income tax went up the same amount, but tariffs are acceptable, because, you know .... China.

The US government has 3 ways to reduce their deficit, reduce spending (DOGE is working on that!), increase income through increased taxes (personal income tax, corporate taxes, excise tax and tariffs), or default on the debt.

Why are tariffs considered a tax paid by consumers, but corporate and excise taxes are not?

Businesses pass corporate and excise taxes on to consumers through higher prices, in the end the consumer always pays!

Do you think that if no country put a tariff on US goods, then President Trump would enact them just because he loves them? Please.......

You cannot be that dense.

I’m sorry if my post was somehow taken as an insult to you. It wasn’t my intent, but obviously that’s how it was received based upon your need to try to insult rather than talk.

Trump has made it very clear that he loves tariffs. He’s spoken many times about his ‘plan’ to replace income taxes with tariff proceeds.  The notion that he sees tariffs strictly as a trade bargaining tool is belied by his own statements.

Now there is a decent argument to be made that Trump doesn’t fully understand the impacts of this blanket tariff policy, and that’s probably the case.

Spin it?  I don't think you have the reading comprehension to understand the point I'm making.

I didn't remember that Sleepy Joe did this, I'm more curious if the Trumpers supported this when he did it or they only think it's a good idea when Trump does it.

Unlike other significant economic downturns, the current situation was launched by a single individual.  On the downside, it wasn’t necessary, but on the upside, fundamental metrics remain strong. Assuming this trade war sees a peaceful resolution. Otherwise the trillions in value lost may take several years to recoup.  This makes the billions sent to Ukraine look like a rounding error.

No worries, I misread the tone. My bad on that.

My point is Trump loves the tariffs to the fact they bring countries to a fair trade agreement, not that he loves tariffs as a rule.

The problem many in here have with Trump is they infer from his statements that he talks like a politician, when the opposite is true, easy for the TDSers to be confused.

Superb question. It's about the perception of punishment, albeit a false and self-destructive perception. Lefties tend to hate corporations, so they clap like seals when they see what looks like corps being punished, while they're simultaneously being pickpocketed. Righties tend to be more Americentric, so they clap like seals when they see what looks like other countries being punished, while they're simultaneously being pickpocketed.

If things get bad enough, there will be no right and left being robbed while also being pitted against each other anymore. There will be people tired of being manipulated and fleeced against the people doing the manipulative fleecing.

Hell of a move. Trump puts 90 day pause on tariffs except to China. Raises theirs to 125%

Now I just get the feeling he’s going to pump the market. Announced 90 day pause to some tarriffs and market now only losing 11 mo of gains instead of 12

Christ, if I had power over the markets and behaved like Trump I'd be in chains by now. He's genuinely insane I believe, up there with Kim Jong Yun.

As an outsider, it's quite fascinating to watch 'freedom' and 'democracy' at work. Hopefully it's not going to impact too severely on the rest of the world for long,
