Have you ever used one? I still wear a kidney belt for back support but will buy this if it offers better support.

Out of all the kidney belts I've ever ridden with, it offers the best back support. My dad has been using them since I was little and always swore by them. I won't wear anything else.

Dug up this thread after my latest evaluation, anyone here living with "Severe degenerative disc disease" ? Mines at L5-S1 with mild to moderate at other levels.  Just curious what others are doing to avoid surgery. Stretching, and exercises have made it "Better" but it's pretty far from good. Got any secret herbs or potions ? Vitamins ? Glucosimine ? What have you tried and did it work ?  I'm doing all the exercises and stretches I've found online and some others the pt gave me. Been doing this for about 3 months, have I put enough time in ? Not being able to lift things and walk "NormaL'' without shooting pain is getting aggravating.  And Yes, I know you're not doctors...

FINDINGS/IMPRESSION: Vertebral bodies are normal in height. There is a mild dextroscoliosis. Severe degenerative disc disease at L5-S1 level and mild to moderate at other levels. A long screws seen traversing the left upper sacrum. No soft tissue abnormality is identified.

Checking in to repeat what some others have said: core strength is likely the problem.  Not that the core isn't "strong", but that it isn't being used to brace the spine from unwanted movement.  The unwanted movement can damage discs causing a variety of pain.

My story in brief: started having symptoms of sciatica which was diagnosed by an orthopedic surgeon as pirformis syndrome (not actually a thing).  Did physical therapy, chiropractor, inversion table, and more.  Most of that made it worse, especially PT.  A separate PT diagnosed it as a herniated disc (accurate).  Continuing to do the things that made it hurt ultimately resulted in a herniation with fragmentation.  So, the pain that came and went with activity became around the clock for weeks before I could arrange for surgery.  What was like a lightning bolt: very intense but brief, became like an around the clock electrocution of my right leg.

A microdiscectomy at L5-S1 made it almost like new.  After about a year of returning to most things (riding, lifting, running), I started having the early symptoms I had years before, indicating I was likely starting to re-injure the same disc.  After starting the McGill Big 3 core strengthening exercises it took things back to mostly good/post surgery.  Stil gets aggravated from time to time, but it's short duration and minimal intensity.

Stu McGill has a very accessible book called Back Mechanic, along with lots of demonstrations on YouTube.  Squat University has lots of demo videos examining various aspects of core strength and specific movements that cause people pain.  If I had found these when I was at your stage, I would have likely been able to return to normal before major injury and the need for surgery.

Do you have any x-rays and/or MRI images you can post?

Edit: my work was done at Texas Orthopedic Hospital in Houston also.  Don't waste your time with non-specialists/general orthopedic surgeons.

Pricey day today in I need my back to hurt less land, bought 2 new pairs of Asics, dropped both shoes off to get a 1” lift on the right ones (@$65.00 a foot x 2) and a new mattress. I’ve been sleeping in a bathtub shaped mattress, just bought the firmest one they make. Sometimes I wake up and my back hurts worse than when I went to bed.
Good news is the pt said ride your bike more, aye aye capn I hear and obey. Been going 3-4 days a week, going for 4 to 5 times. The pt stuff takes about an hour and a half a day but pain is great motivator, I need to retire ! lol

Try the cheap foam mattress pads from Walmart . I hv 4 stacked on this cheap wore out trk bed.  Pt I had countless hrs since 96.  U know how cute the girls always r rt ?  97 for my shoulder & Sally had me doing pt for my knee I had done 5 months earlier.  Well we ended up dating our 1st day we did a bunch of stuff. Started with a mtn bike ride on the trails threw the woods. We took a little break & started French kissing we had our hands all ovr each other.  Then to a amusement park cheap rides .50 best beach, then batting cages , go carts, then to a sold life sanctuary. Then yo my place change to go jet skiing on the tiver& bay.  There’s a Super pretty young gal of 22 she’s a pt student at uwm in Milwaukee. She’s from Crystall lake, iL. But lives in gb now. She life guards at the y when not in school .  She’s advanced for her age . She says age is the cause & a wore out body basically, I agree. Pt just gets u better so u can work & function.  I also said oh cool 1 more yr & your done I think she did reg college for something else.  I asked her would u ever date your patient laughing .  I said u know the hunk but u guys really click together. Lol.  She had a big laugh & said I never thought about that . And couldn’t stop smiling .  She said laughing I don’t think where supposed to.  I had to pallet jack double stacked liquid totes with a junk pj. It wouldn’t go straight it slammed into the wall . I could feel my disk popping out & my butt muscles tearing , my hip started feeling a little better & that sharp pain was back.  Hen drive in a severe high wind sand & thunder storm . Ah

Wow 😮 That’s impressive. Glad you are feeling better, but geez… that’s gotta ache in the cold weather.

I have been dealing with neck and back pain for 20+ years. Some injuries were from dirt bikes and MTB’s, but my job selection of manual labor was a poor choice.
I’ve broken my back 3 different times, but the vertebrae’s healed well without surgery. But I’ve had lots of nerve issues and my back is always aching. Most recently sciatica has really been debilitating.

Although my neck is what causes me the most pain. My C3-C7 discs have issues and I’ve been avoiding spinal fusion as long as possible. Disc replacement is not an option for me, due to too many levels of injury in my neck. The nerve pain from my C5-C7 has to be the absolute worst pain I’ve ever experienced. Nothing can compare to nerve pain. But to be honest, I’m scared of getting any more surgeries, too many blood clot problems/ deaths with family members and friends.

I totally understand your situation. Manual labor, life time of riding, several major get-offs... Sometimes it all adds up with negative results.

And your neck pain, I think I know.

Is that your back ? My mri from 3 yrs ago showed cost all ovr my kidneys.  96 breaking the back with rusted disk against the nerves was hell. Surgery on 10-2-02 helped a lot.  I had a cool up stairs apartment at the time .  Non of my family stopped ovr . Robin a college student perfect bod with a gorgeous face helped me.  It took everything u had to move my legs .  Green Bay now says they don’t do back surgeries. There is a shortage of back surgeries, different hospital networks share them.  4 yrs ago I said just install 7 rubber disk or whatever your using now.  They don’t do that anymore.   In the 90,s into to 2000,s specialist gave u huge bottles of pain killers with 5 refills, that stopped.  Laughter is also a great pain reliever . Some truckers r funny just get a new trucker pal. 2 horrible days in a row. Loading in iL. Ag shack they double stacked liquid totes then threw the worse pallet jack I ever saw. . The dam thing wouldn’t go straight it ran into the wall. Trying to pull it I could feel the lower 8 disk pressure , my butt muscles tearing & my hip joint coming out.  Then drive a super dangerous trk with the totes constantly surging quick in 60 mph winds sand storm, thunder storm . To make shit .  Tge 2 deliveries where beyond f,d up .I couldn’t get fuel because it was double stacked ovr wt. He wanted to triple stack it fing stupid.  Next pu totally f,d up .  I got lucky I didn’t run out of fuel. Then the mud flap app says card no good.  All his cc,s r maxed out and he’s broke like all co.s.  How does sone pay for 4 surgeries when you can’t earn a 80,s wage.
