Who's the rider/racer that had the ultimate decision of "which" is best and "could have"...jus' maybe..."Could have"...

Bingo...

K-Dub was on the Thumper and RC was on the Smoker...I remember K-Dub out-drag-racing RC threw the whoops at Millville(?)....2004?

I remember thinkin'...

When Honda came out with the Elsinore...it was OVER for 4 strokes in Moto/Scrambles...

Then, years later, Honda was the 1st OEM to throw the 2t under the bus.

You'll never get me to say an ill word about Doug Henry. To me, he is an absolute hero of motocross. But you gotta admit, when that big bore boom box he was riding took the checkers first in SX, the writing was on the wall.

Definitely . It's funny , they never completely disappeared . Husky and ATK made some pretty capable 4 stroke mxers in the 80s but it wasn't until the 98 YZ 400 that the tide began to turn .

And going even further back to 93 when Jacky Martens won the 500 world title on a Husky 610 4 stroke effectively transforming it to the unlimited class after that . I think Shayne King won the title in 96 on a KTM 360 and that was the last hurrah for a 2 stroke in the old 500 world championships.

It was Yamaha/Honda/AMA.



Think about it, if Henry won on a 400, did the AMA really need to bump it to 450cc???

Nope, that was the nail in the coffin.



Isn't it the AMA's "J.O.B." to make rules that make things "FAIR". Well it's supposed to be, but I would be willing to bet a shiny nickel that some AMA guys got some sssuuuuwwweeeettttt all expense vacations funded by, well uuuuhhhhh take a guess.





They wanted to make sure the smoker went away so they could make more money selling valves, valve springs, cams, etc. to all the kool-aid drinkers. And drink they did, like a bunch of sailors.



So no, NO rider made that decision.

But when faced with that kind of disadvantage they had no choice but to jump to the 450.

Thumpers are much better to go fast for long periods of time. IE: pro racing.

Two Strokes are the most fun you can have with your clothes on.

The controversy then was that Henry didn't want to even ride it! I think Yamaha threatened to oust him if he refused.

I remember Henry racing up in Gainsville. 4-strokes were suppose to be good for motorcycleing in genreal as they are quieter, less pollution, greener, etc. That 400 he was on was the loudest, smokiest (is that a word) SOB I ever saw. Smoke was spewing from that thing more than 40 2-storkes all together. I was praying it would spit it's guts out. Not for Henry but for the way the sport was beginning to travel. The writing was on the wall. I hated them then and still do.

i feel yamaha brought the coffin( yz400f) but honda put the nail in the coffin when it produced the 02CR250R the probs with that motor had honda loyals running for the CRF450 so they could have a decent bike to keep up with the other manufacturers....

They didn't bump it to 450cc . The rule was 550cc at the time . They scaled it back to 450cc .

And that he did . 23 out of 24 motos won and only lost the one because of a crash .
