08 KTm 450SX or 07 KX450F

Edited Date/Time 1/26/2012 11:29pm
Looking to buy a new bike. Just got the 14 year old boy an 03 CRF450, that is MINT. Hardly ridden. Now, I cant decide what to get. I can get the 07 KX 450 for 6300, and the 08 KTM 450SX for 7500 or so.( both brand new, off the floor) I used to ride Expert/pro class, but now will be in the old fat guy class, so I think both bikes will be good. Just cant seem to decide. My last bike was an 06 KX450F, and it was really quite good. Not the most reliable bike... fit and finish wasnt the best. What would you get?

Both are awesome bikes...I would learn towards the electric start though. Yeah, I'm kind of lazy!! :?

I had an 03 250SX. That was by far, the roughest, most tiring bike I have ever owned. Light switch power, and jackhammer suspension.
Im not afraid at all of the 08 KTM 450SX. Most of the tests I have read praise it. The e-start is wicked too. The KX is a great bike too. Basically, heavier springs for my 6' 2" 220 lb carcass, and ride the things. But which one... dang it. Decisions decisions

It would be hard to spend the extra $1,200 for electric start...
I know that KTM has a few other pluses, but with $1,200 you can buy a pitbike! <img class= " title="Laughing">

I rode both bikes, the KXF got more bottom end, a LOT more. The KTM is faster mid and top. The suspension and handling is better on the KXF (my opinion) There's one thing I can't get used to with the KTM, the seat is as hard as a rock! It's not even funny! The KTM is decked out with nice components for sure.

They are both really good bikes, but for the price difference, I'd go with the KXF, parts are also cheaper than KTM parts. My 2 friends from Canada now ride KTM (got sponsored), they cracked 2 pistons out of 3 bikes in less than 30 hrs. KTM did waranty them but still... If you go with the KTM, don't even think about running even an ounce more oil than recommended, it might be what's causing it.

But with that said, I can get an 08 KX450f for 6400, I think you should be able to do better than 6300 for an 07, search around, I know you can get an 07 for under 6000.

These are Canadian prices, so things might be cheaper down in Fl. Im leaning towards the KTM, cause I have had a few, and they were all great bikes. Did you feel the KX was way better than the KTM, or just your preference. Im used to the super hard seats... and, KXs probably have the softest seat. I loved my KXF450. IT was fast, and was a good bike. Im thinking that the softer bottom end power on the KTM would allow my wife to ride it easier, as well as the electric start. She loved my 520SX, but it was hard to start for her. Hmmm.. tough choice. Maybe I should buy them both! lol I wish.

Maybe a guy should buy a 300XC, and stiffen it up for moto. It would be 25% trail ridden, and then 75% moto, as we have a practice track on the farm, and a dozer to play with.

I've ridden several the '08 450s (KTM, Kawi, & Honda) and I prefer the KTM, especially over the Kawi.

The 06 CRF450 is better than either of those bikes and you can buy a brand new one for $4,699.

I love my 08 KTM 450. The motor is killer and the suspension doesnt bother me at all. The seat is a little stiff but you should be standing up anyways. <img class= " title="Wink">

Go for the KTM.

I was recently forced to change from KTM, to SUZUKI, I have only ridden the bike twice due to Injury, but I would still rather be on the KTM.

You will hear the old ,the suspension is crap due to no linkage blah blah , but if the bike is set up right they are just awesome bikes to ride.

I rode my friends Kawas, but I think they sit really low in the back end which I didn't like, appears to affect the handling and the seat felt like a big soft sofa, saying that I'm used to the KTM seat.

Also, the KTM engine pulls like a train right through the rev range. I think as well if you are a taller rider the KTM will also favor you a great deal, I'm 6'1 and the Jap bikes all seem quite cramped for me.

Dang it!! I was about to pick up the KX today, that way I could buy my wifey the 230F honda they have there that is MINT. Not a mark on the thing, and the original tires and chains and sprockets. I dont know that there would have been two tanks of gas through the thing. Its wifeys birthday today too, so Im heading into town to pick that up for sure. Dang it. What to do. Im deciding today. Probably wont bring it home today, but will decide, and cut the check. What a pathetic decision to have to make...lol I must be getting old.

After owning a KX450F, I would pay the extra dough and buy a KTM450. The KTMs are great bikes, and you get the magic button also. Quite honestly, my KX was a pile. I had an 06 though, so maybe they fixed the first year stuff that went wrong. Id say KTM all the way, you'll love it. If not, go get a brand new 07 CRF450 for cheap. Ive seen them as low as 6k OTD.

What he said.

The Kawas I rode were race prep 07 ones and they didn't have a patch on the KTM.

For 7500 your choices could be all 08 450's not just an 07 Kawi and 08 Ktm. I would much rather have a 07 or 08 honda 450 then any of those. That being said between your 2 choices I believe all the Japanese 450's are better than the ktm's. So I would go with the kawi is I were you and have 1000 to spare. Or depending how your purchasing it less money to pay it off <img class= " title="Laughing">

so you've rode a 08 KTM 450??

AAhhhhh! i told him I would buy the 07 KX, but now Im regretting it. I just cant decide. The KX seems kind of bland... just doesnt seem as cool as the KTM, but I know the KX would be great, cause I had the 06. I hated the 4 speed, but the rest of the bike was decent. Im still thinking I should pay the money, and get the KTM. Maybe I should finance it, and throw 5 grand down, and then the price is minor, just pay off the extra this fall after harvest is done. The e-start and the looks of the KTM is what I like. The suspension worries me a bit, but being 37 and an intermediate speed guy now, it probably wouldnt make a lick of difference. The old buy what you want thing... frikk.
