Riding FAST in the woods IS more dangerous than riding FAST on a mx track!

If a controlled track, proximity to EMS, or being exclusive to people with special equipment (Like Sorby says), are the reasons why MX is safer than Woods...............

Then why is Flat Track more dangerous than both woods and MX?

Is it because of the jumps?

Dude I was at this race, it was the Charlotte dirt track a few years back it was probably the craziest thing I've ever seen in motorsports. He was at like fans eye level when he was in the air.

Also hopefully they come back soon it was my first flat track race and just went because it was cheap and my dad wanted to check it out, these guys are insane in person.

Anecdotal evidence here from me. Almost all of my injuries and there are many came from moto. One broken pinky in offroad.

I ride/race both woods and Mx tracks, All my serious injuries are from Mx tracks…I have been banged up from hitting trees or falling on rocks in the woods but usually speeds are slower in the woods. Mx is a sprint, fast as you can go most of the time, woods is more 75-80% of your full speed IMO….for me woods/hare scrambles/ gncc”s type riding is safer, assuming trails are known and marked for direction…..

I think there's dangers to both. At least at a moto track, there are people around who will come to your aid if you're hurt and need medical attention. I had a friend in high school who raced desert. He wadded up pretty bad out in the boonies and got knocked out. When he work up, he was flat on his back and looking at the sole of his own boot - and it was still on his foot! He had broken his femur so badly that it twisted around on him. It took his family and a chase crew hours to find him. No thanks.

I think there's dangers to both.

Uh oh! I think you mean There ARE dangers to both.

Don't let the grammar police hear about this one!

Doenst really help my case of arguing off-road is safer but Jesse posted this from last weeks GNCC some of the best POV from an actual pro ive seen.

I have never ridden Western trails, nor the desert, but Eastern woods riding is definitely more dangerous than moto. Downvotes Likely Matter !  DLM !

Riding in the woods or racing in the woods?  If you've done both you know difference.   RACING in the woods is wild.  The margin of error for hitting a tree is razor thin with roots and rocks sticking up that you didn't know were there.   And trees don't move.

Riding in the woods,  no big deal.

I don't ride woods at all, just cause I like moto. In the OHV areas near me there are WAY too many people on UTVs, drinking beer and shooting guns, for me to feel safe (oh I like guns, just not in OTHER people's hands!). And I don't think I'd enjoy the technicality of PNW woods - it's always wet and slick in there with so many ways to crash. With moto I usually know what I'm getting for track prep, I can see ahead of me, and if I don't feel it I can just pack up and not ride.

I ride street too and that has its own hazards and minefields. I'm pretty cautious out there and I avoid city traffic, period. I only ride out in the countryside on nice days. I'm old and I got nuthin to prove to anyone about how tough I am. Smile

Any form of motorcycle riding is dangerous. The more goons, beginners, and drunks there are the worse it is. Dunes? Oh hell no........

The juniper dunes are like Vietnam now, I won’t even go anymore

Stu Baylor broke his neck to the extent he basically almost decapitated himself, but still finished a race. Riding woods doesn't seem risky, but riding in the woods at a face pace is what creates the risk. As Jeremy Clarkson once said, "speed has never killed anyone; suddenly becoming stationary, that's what gets you." And in GNCC/NEPG enduros, there are a LOT of those things that can be causes for sudden deceleration.

in general, off road riders/racers are riding slower, due to a variety of reasons. conserving energy for longer durations, enjoying the ride,, and comfort level. when ive been out with friends, the pace is easy, no one has anywhere to be or is trying to 'race' and the constant unknown terrain makes riders stay cautious longer, its been pointed out that the guys get hurt doing practice in SX when its over a simple obstacle theyve done a 100x's. and i think thats why, they get comfortable and push the edge further

That's an awesome video, thanks for sharing it...off-road, at those speeds, is dangerous...but watch a POV of an average joe on riding that course, and then its easy to see why off-road is much safer than moto.

Russell Bobbitt crashed in the last test at Sumter NEPG last month, hit a stump. Broken ribs, arm, collapsed lung among other injuries. Spent a week in the hospital.

Lots of people thinking they can go through the trees as fast as Stu Baylor is swaying the opinions in this thread I think.

When I race moto I put 100% effort to go as fast as possible.  Racing Offroad im about 75%. Conserving energy and hidden obstacles keep me from 100%.

I personally have suffered much  worse injuries in our X Country series ( Tree--separated/broken  shoulder destroyed labrum  -- another tree/rock combo completely annihilated my ACL,MCL,PVL , and yet another tree broke a couple fingers -minor ,  than I have in the MX races .  However , that could be because I was never a woods guy growing up ,so my skills on the Moto track are far superior to my woods ability. But on the other hand local fast guys like Broc Hepler got balled up much worse at his GNCC races too.  Slippery roots, slippery rocks trees and high speeds are major recipes for disaster . I'll take my chances in the wide open spaces on the MX track

I will also concur with any and all dislike for Cantanzaro. He annoys the fuck out of me.  Im actually seeing people riding around the track with one arm. And there asses sticking out past the rear fender. I giggle a bit.

I'm enjoying the variety of answers though.

It's definitely not as cut and dry as I thought.  I'm surprised how many moto dudes that probably do some gnarly jumps are afraid of trees 🤣

All I know is that when I watch the vids of the guys ripping through the woods, particularly those ones like Paddycam, I crash right out of my chair at least twice and bash my knuckles god-knows-how.

And if I watch the vids of the fast guys doing the bomb run in a desert race, I break fingers from gripping the chair so tight and usually have to change my shorts afterward.

Inconclusive and non-scientific, but there you go.
