If it was just a hairline fracture before riding the qualifier and main, would it snap like that from riding?

Fub doesn't bare weight. Just helps turn the foot/ankle. Doesn't usually require surgery or even a cast.

I had an identical injury several years ago in basically same way. Drove 1.5 hours to the track. On the first lap my boot stuck in a rut and the foot peg came up and hit the back of the boot while my foot was planted. Instant pain, I cruised around for half a lap then loaded up and headed home. By the time I got to the hospital I could barely walk. It is incredibly impressive eli rode a night show like that and even scored points1000000107

Deathcross strikes again. In another month it'll be Hand vs Harlan for the title.

Friese is just biding his time to come back and Podium. 😁

I also broke my fibula, I hooked a rut at Washougal in the corner before the whoops. I tried to ride but my leg was too  unstable. Thought it was sprained or something. I limped around at work for two weeks before I went in to realize that it was broken and displaced. Was in a cast for 6 weeks. My experience was that it wasn't terribly painful, just annoying.

So here's what I'm getting by reading between the lines. Tomac was supposed to be SX only and then retire.

SX title is now out of the question. However he says "i want to come back as soon as possible"    Why? If he was SX only then i would be expecting a retirement press release?

IMO... Hes coming back for 3 reasons. 1: SMX points (which confirms SMX?) 2. If he's in for SMX then he's in for MX. 3. Hes going to use the last rounds of SX to make sure his mind and body is dialed for outdoors.

Just my 2 cents. The dude is far from done

He said this is his last full season of smx, and he didn’t say no to the possibility of coming back next year for supercross only. I think he defends the wsx title and does sx only next year.

Oh ok. I thought he was SX only this year with an option for outdoors.

Of all the bones he could have broken, this is quite possibly the quickest one to recover from. Just saying with optimism.

I’m pretty sure he’s signed up for everything.

Would he even try and make supercross? Or just wait until outdoors. Sucks he will miss daytona.

Just had to call my buddy whos like a Tomac freak. I knew he would know lol. You are correct. He was in for the whole year before this 😀

It’s not often that I am at a loss for words, but this is one of those times. Racing a Pro Supercross Main Event on the most brutal track of the year with a broken leg is INSANE. Eli Tomac was already one of the greatest riders ever. This elevates him higher. That’s one tough SOB

I don’t know.  My guess is he will get back racing as soon as possible just to keep sharp but who knows what he is thinking.

I’m not sure that bone can be reset without surgery. Not sure if that would really affect recovery time (I lean no) but I think it may be needed to get the bone set properly.

NFL players often break fibulas with a 4 week return. I broke my fibula and thought it was a really bad sprain until a couple days past and I realized it was more. Now My fibula wasn’t displaced like the X-ray Yamaha shows (if that is Tomac’s actual).

I’m not Eli Tomac though. On one leg, Eli went straight to the main and scored points. Beyond gnarly to think about that.

My kid broke his and was displaced even worse than Eli's and had bone shards in the muscle. We didn't think it was broke he even got back on his bike and kicked started it and rode to the pits took him to the doctor the next day as I could tell something was wrong but he really wasn't in too much pain! Dr Ryman from the asterisk medical crew put a plate and five screws in he was back on a stationary bike one week after surgery! Attempted his first pro National at less than 6 weeks after surgery and was doing pretty good until he got T-boned in that leg in time qualifying that kind of ended his day LOL! I can see Tomac with the Steadman Clinic being back within 4 weeks just need a good plate and we know he can handle the pain!

If he has 4 weeks of recovery time, how much time will it take for him to get back on the bike and feeling comfortable?

You can’t make up for lost time. If he comes back for SX I’m not sure we’d see him as sharp as we did at the beginning of the year. He shouod he feeling fine for outdoors I’d guess.

You have a good point, but would the current fitness carry over somewhat to post injury fitness? Or am I just dumb and don’t know about this topic very well 😂.(I don’t think i’ve ever broken a bone)

Yup. Fib is like the leg's collarbone.

To a degree yes. But anything longer then a week out of your routine and it’s definitely noticeable to the athlete. Start stacking weeks and hes definitely going to lose some top end fitness. The bigger issue I think is the lost bike time. Eli has been racing and training from September til now with out any interruption. He was riding maybe as good as we’ve seen in SX. That lost seat time and all the little timing, and rhythm and feeling you had goes out the window and has to be regrooved when he’s back on the bike.

Google is your friend. 2 weeks to weight bearing, 6 weeks to healed in a healthy person. Pretty sure this works in Eli's favor.

If it is plated it's longer to heal.

He'll be fine by outdoors.

Jett, not so much, 6-9 months. As long as a year for an athlete to return. I think all these guys come back too early from severe injuries leading to less than optimal performance and higher risk of reinjury.

Agreed. Luckily, though, I think he has more than enough time to regain any losses in sharpness on the bike before MX.
