There's been calls to ban start devices, metal grates, 450s, and tons more These calls are to slow bikes down, make starts safer/slower etc. Why wouldn't we start with banning paddle/sand tires? You also get the huge benefit of being easier on the tracks which would hopefully help the rut issue and whoops getting killed so quickly.
Yes this would be semi "artificial" put every motorsport is this way. F1, Indy, Nascar, they all decide to make tires that will degrade and intentionally choose not to run the best rubber possible. Moto should do the same thing
Edit: I clearly mean tires like the MX14
Great explanation
They are already banned! Check the rulebook
The Shop
Luxon 4-Post Bar Mounts
$189.95 - $239.95
DeCal Works Huge Plastic Inventory of UFO and Polisport kits.
Not banned
That’s not a paddle tire. Think Glamis sand dune paddle tire. 👍
Why the fug are we trying to ban or redesign everything?
Racers call those paddles, obviously it's not a full on dune tire and obviously no one is running a 6-8 paddle in moto.
Here's AC talking about leading laps and LLs. You think he ran a 8 paddle tire like you would at the dunes?
I don't think he has ever changed a spark plug. No offense AC.
Scoop tires should be banned, paddle tires are already banned.
I am in So Cal and I run a scoop tire often. They work so darn good! It is what it is. But I have been saying they should be banned since they started getting popular the last few years. I feel they are dangerous! Until you are behind one, you would probably never know. Especially trying to pass, you get hit with EVERYTHING coming off that rear wheel!!! And we don't have any "sand" tracks. Yes we have sandy tracks, but they have rocks also!!! And that stuff hurts!!!
They were banned after Jimmy Weinert won the Oakland SX (in 1979?). That was a real paddle tire!
I agree with banning the start devices. I heard Adam and MC talk about what happens when they don't release. KR's did not release on his start that he tangled with Oldenberg, and he struggled to get it to release once he got going again. They are also getting ridiculously low as of the last year.
If the scoop tires are such a definitive advantage, why doesn't everyone use them?
Look at the 250 gate from this past weekend, didn't most have them?
If you want to ban anything, ban the traditional start gate. Personally, I am not for it myself but if you really think about, in one fell swoop you would fix a lot of "problems" by going to a staggered start. First corner chaos would be much less likely to happen. Like talent would be around like talent. Top guys always near the front so theoretically racing would be better. Guys like Vince, ( who i dont have a problem with really myself) wouldn't be interfering with front runners when they get a good start. There would be more space for another lane or maybe even 2 on the track. This would increase laptimes, regardless of stadium, which would reduce wear and tear on the track. About the only negative i can really think of would be losing the traditional land rush start that moto has always had. I am not pushing for it myself, but it is some food for thought and I think would be one of the easiest and most logical changes if something were to be changed.
I follow Dirt Car racing just as closely as SX/MX and one of the most interesting things leading into every feature event is who chose what compound tire on each side of the car. It really makes or breaks a driver’s night. We don’t need to follow NASCAR or F1 on mandating tires.
Ban steel grate launch pads and hole shot devices. Then make all starts from concrete or another smooth surface. It’ll slow down and spread out the starts and should make the first turns a little safer.
Leave tire choice to the riders.
Pit Row
It's The Jammer's fault.
Ban tires. it's making the sport too easy. Hannah and Bailey would wrap their wheels with silencer packing. Decoster just put his axles through pizza boxes.
You said a mouthful Brother.
I can attest to the pain of being behind a person with a scoop tire.
Agreed. While we’re at it, I think ICEs (internal combustion engines) should be banned, and we should return to Flintstone-ing the bike like a 2 year old. It’s all about safety.
Make rubber band starts great again!
This.
Add traction control, start maps, etc., etc.
Everyone trying to one up each other but they all end up having the same tech and 22 riders end up at the same spot at the same time.
Putting rider skill back into the equation will increase the variation in the results and spread out the riders. Not to mention rewarding the rider with the best start skills. And isn't that what racing is supposed to measure - skills and not the best tech package?
scoop tires are the least of the problem. lets start with those dumb ass metal start grates......
The manufacturers pay their riders to advertise their latest and greatest tech, accept for Suzuki who have shown it's the rider not the bike!
For some reason in America, everyone likes the idea and thought behind "banning" things. People here are always shouting and protesting to ban this or ban that. It is really bazar if you think about it from that perspective.
Then we gotta ban scoop/paddle shoes and granite starting blocks!
