What IS a terrible take is thinking that there were no other winners because McGrath won them all!

The difference is, Jett entered the class facing the champions of the previous 7 years.
For this to be equal, McGrath would’ve needed to enter the class and face Stanton, Bayle, Ricky Johnson and Jeff Ward.

But all but one of them had retired.

I do think that this might be the strongest field in SX history, but IMO that doesn't diminish what MC did. Someone posted MC's competitors and those were some pretty salty dudes.

If RJ and Wardy had still been racing in 1993, would that have somehow bolstered MC's accomplishments? Ward was 31 in 1993 but had been replaced by younger riders by that point which illustrates that MC raced the best SX riders in the world at the time, just like Jett is doing now.

With 9 wins in '92, Bradshaw was obviously SX championship level and would've been SX champ in 1992 had things had gone ever so slightly differently. But either way that 92 championship falls, MC beat them all resoundingly in 1993 anyway so it really makes no difference.

I'll conclude with the fact that RC only won a single premier class outdoor title against a former AMA 250/450 Pro Motocross champion in his entire career (Albertyn in 2000). Yes, you could also throw Tortelli in there since he was an MXGP champ, but you get my point.

I don't know why some people have to use contrived drama to justify their actions - if you want to get JL's # tattoed on your willy, by all means, go ahead; no need to create a smokescreen on the forum.

Hate that you're gonna have to put the "1" on one side and the "8" on the other to make it fit, but hey, you can only work with the space available to you.

Did McGrath have it easier than Jett is going to?

The numbers say yes..

1993 McGrath’s Rookie premier class season
Up against 1 previous champion, Jeff Stanton with three championships to his name( 1989, 1990 & 1992)

1994- Faced 1 previous champion (Stanton)

1995- Faced 1 previous champion (Stanton)

1996- up against NO previous champions

1997- up against NO previous champions

1998 - Faced 1 prev. champion (Emig ‘96)

1999- Faced 1 prev. champion (Emig ‘96)

2000- up against NO previous champions

2001- up against NO previous champions

*This marked the last win of Jeremy’s career. (January 20th 2001)
Over 9 seasons in which he got race wins, he faced a previous champion in five of those.

Compared to Jett:
2024 Jett’s rookie premier class season.
Up against four previous premier class champions with 6 championships to their names:

Tomac (20, 22)

Sexton (23)

Webb (19,21)

Anderson  (18)

2025- Faced four previous premier class champions

2026- Will likely face 3 previous premier class champions (if Tomac quits) (others quitting hasn’t been discussed)

So far, in three seasons in which he scored wins, he’s faced four champions with 6 championships between them in each of them.

He was the previous  champion  when there "wasn't" one lol.

Seriously man , the kids just blown his knee out and will miss the rest of the season and this is an injury that will have the potential to annoy him for the rest of his career and you come out with this thread....facepalm

However I don't get why everyone gets the shits on as soon as its even mentioned that anyone dare strive to reach 72 wins or try and beat it how dare anyone have any ambitions or goals

McGrath dominated in a way never seen before or since.  72 wins in sx is incredible, and with Jett out this season, it'll be even more difficult for him to reach that number, especially with some of the young guns that are going to be moving to the class in the next few years.

Yes,  he did dominate.

It took RC 3yrs to be able to beat MC on a SX track. RC is undoubtedly the greatest dirt bike racer of all time and was an absolute savage. If it takes RC 3yrs to beat you then yeah you’re as good as it gets. I swear, these kids have no idea how good MC was.

Totally agree with you on the 1st part of your post.    Thread is dumbgeon worthy.

As to the 2nd part....speaking for myself, it's not that Jett set a goal. When I poke fun at the topic, it's aimed at the crazy fans, not Jett.   These fans keep pushing the topic over and over and over.    There are so many variables in an ever changing future.    He's got 9  SX wins in two seasons and now he's been injured twice (SX/MX).    Start discussing 73 when he hits the 50's...

Before this thread gets thrown into the dumbgeon, I'll chime in my 2 cents...

1. Different eras, can't compare the competition nor where the sport was and is now

2. MC ushered in a new style never seen before. The current era has everyone riding the same, just some better than others

3. Jett never said he was going to beat 72 wins, nor that he wanted to. He said it would be cool to beat it, but some choose not to acknowledge that

4. Jett is in his second season. Let's have this conversation once he's retired

I encourage this behavior!

If Tomac keeps racing 2 more seasons, he has a chance to beat 72.  It's a long shot, but possible.

Yep exactly,  but the tards heard what they wanted to hear and ran with it spreading their misinformation and bullshit all over the place and the sheep all fell into line and booed the kid over something he never said.

Thank you for being a voice of reason. It blows my doors off how offended some people get when their romantically embellished perspective of history is challenged.
The King will always be the King, I don’t think anyone in their right mind would argue against that. Jett is a freak on a dirt bike, but where he stands against the record books remains to be seen.

However whichever side of this argument you’re on (why does it always have to be one or the other? Seems childish to me) there can never be a definitive answer when comparing different eras. Never.
No matter how sure you are of your point of view, or how passionate your argument, someone’s opposing perspective can also be correct.
It’s great lighthearted bench racing fodder with a beer, but a mug’s game otherwise.

Tomac, Sexton, Webb, Anderson won those titles BEFORE Jett entered the class. Then Jett entered and beat them all.

And that’s kinda my point- 72 for Jett isn’t realistic, because if the competition he’s facing.

Now if Eli, Anderson and Webb had retired, just like McGrath’s did,  his chances greatly improve.

Jett has not beaten Tomac or Webb when they're healthy, or Chase when he isn't struggling with a new bike for that matter. Those guys are all better now and it shows, Jett's average finish was 5th place before he got injured 🤣 also, I laughed when you said Anderson was a "great champion". He's one of the weakest riders to ever win a SX championship

Jett never "dethroned" Tomac or Webb. Hell, both of those dudes have beaten him straight up this year and are ahead in the points. Dude can't even handle Tomac at 32 years old 😂
