Leatt:- dropping standards

Im a long time loyal leatt customer, head to shins in Leatt (never got there boots).

I bought a pair of Leatt 4.5 kit recently on a close out sale. I thought it would do me the winter & id buy a fresh set in spring.

Unfortunately on my second days ridin (about 1.5 hours use) the rear rubber snapped without any crash. It has other cracks like its been brittle. The weard thing is the older i get the more i care about holding companies to account. The young me with no money would throw them in the bin & buy another pair. The older me with money feels a sense of injustice & that companies shouldn’t get away with ripping people off with poor products.
Long story short, the seems were starting to pull apart too, they looked so poorly made i tackled the dealer & accused him of selling Temu fakes. He denied it & said i should send to Leatt for warranty which i did. To my surprise, they are legitimate pants & Leatt wont stand over them! Lol

I’m not worried about the money. Its the principle!

Time for some FXR me thinks.

The plastic is scuffed and the pants have a small tear. If that is a vent hole, it looks frayed. How did that happen without crashing?

I mean the plastic rubbery part shouldn't break like that but every pair of pants I have gets tiny tears in them from braces and squeezing the bike but they last forever like that. I havent heard much good about Leatt gear or knee braces but their chest protectors and boots are good.

Looks normal for riding gear. We abuse the shit out of MX gear.

Iv a guts seat. After it broke the plastic bit was flapping about. I was basically sitting on top of it so it was rubbing off the ribbed seat.

Apart from a few tip overs at the weston beach race i havnt had a good crash in a few years. Im starting to worry that my luck runs out soon & im due a biggie

Maybe sitting in a hot shipping container too long and the rubber material wasn't designed for the heat?

I would feel the same after only 1.5 hours of riding. Hopefully just a lemon?

How old are they?  Depending howthey are stored maybe the plastic got brittle over time (similar to tires).

I am.about to pull the trigger on a new set of Leatt gear due to what i feel is a lack of quality in Astars gear.

The Fly gear looked pretty decent in person, I may go that route now.

Also how and what you use to wash them can have an effect on those TPU pieces.

Gear is lighter these days, especially pants.  It just doesn't last long for a weekend racer.

My experience is that Fly gear doesn't hold up as well either.   I currently have a few sets of fly and the stitching around the collar of the jerseys is falling apart with minimal use.  Also, the paper-thin "rip-stop" material they use in the knee area is very easy to damage.
The gloves are pure garbage.  They are paper thin on the palm and they only last a few races before they wear through (with stock ODI grips).

In the past I've had some Fly Kinetic Mesh that lasted a long time.  Finally the material on the butt wore through.
That was nice gear, but it weighed more.   That older fly was a loose fitting style while the latest stuff is a bit more "athletic".

For me 60% of the fly gear I have purchased over the years has had durability issues, especially in the stitching.
I wouldn't buy Fly again unless it was on clearance with a very very big discount.
I am considering looking at FXR and the custom printed gear brand (cannot think of the name now) that is made in the USA.

As i dont race anymore my gear doesn’t get very dirty. I mostly ride sand so i just wash it on the ‘quick 30’ 30 mins at 30 degrees setting. These only got washed once before they broke.

I had durability issues with thor & alpinestars in the past. When i say issues, they probably didn’t make it past 10-15 hours use. The new super stretch material is so thin it doesn’t last long. But this is the first pair thats made it lesss than 2 hours.

For fly, i have a set of fly kenetic that have held up well. Everyone talks about how good FXR is but they are so expensive. However as we say here ‘buy cheap, buy twice’

The style isn’t for everyone, but my Fasthouse gear has indisputably been the most durable modern gear I’ve had.

Go to Troy Leed Designs gear.  That stuff is made tougher in my opinion.  Troy Lee doesn't put out junk and their helmet/ gear is tough.

Hey man,

There are a bunch of good shops in the UK stocking gear.

If you want to try FXR and you ride sand, Checkout their Clutch Pro Line, Podium, or Contender.

Those ones have the thickest rear panel and at mid-range price points, with the performance of full 4-way stretch.

I put 40 hours on a set of clutch pro last year and still brand new (stock Yamaha seat with mild grip, and not a ton of sand. I do sit a ton though).

Good luck!

Thanks for the heads up. It really sucks that with the multitude of gear companies out there you still need to narrow that list before you buy.

I still have a set of Thor gear from 2006 that fits( must have bought oversized back then 😄) and it is still intact.

agreed, I recently switched back to TLD, after a short period of time in FXR, which I didn't really care for, I thought it was thin and cheaply made. It was bought directly from FXR so no TEMU here.

In my opinion (we all have one), O'Neal and Troy Lee have been the longest lasting pants I've worn. I finally just got tired of wearing a pair of O'Neal Hardware pants and bought another pair. I used the old ones to practice in and it wasn't until a buddy borrowed them and crashed resulting in them being cut off of him were they retired.
