My first time there was in 72
Still get to ride there.

My son and I rode there this last Sunday. The facility looks awesome and tracks were primo!

But the best part after riding 5 twenty minute moto's in 94 degrees heat and 97% humidity.......the pool is open!

Sure riding on one of the oldest MX tracks in the US was good and all, but to be able to jump into a cool swimming pool when you are done riding......priceless!

We are going sunday morning, anyone going also ?

Drats, looks like we will miss you. I think we are headed to 3P on Saturday morning. They added some new sand in places and made it softer, which it really needed. The tracks should be in pretty good shape. The prep is best early in the day.

I rode there in the early 90's a few times. It was really neat to think about what it was like back in the early 70's when the Trans-AM's were being run there and imagine Roger DeCoster, Ake Johnson et al had ridden the same track. I am sure there were lot's of memories made there for a lot of people. I would love to go back again now that it is shaped up.

Yeah, a lot of moto history there. It's the track where the first American(Weinert) won a moto over the Euros(unheard of in the early 70s). Saw a lot of pros race there, wish/hope they can get a Natl there again.

You guys want to hear something cool;

The day after the Houston Supercross, Roger D. spent the day at Rio hanging out and just talking with everyone and visiting with people. About mid-day I was out on the old track coming around the first left-hand sweeper after the start. I looked up, and Roger was standing there at the fence watching me go by. Then it hit me, here I was riding on the exact same course, on a RM250 and Roger was standing there watching me. And about 35 years ago I was standing by that same turn watching HIM go by on a RM250 also. (of course he was going WAAAAAY faster)

It was a cool moment in my life. Cool

Now your just being humble. Everyone knows you are a former SoCal MXer from way back.

We are gettin' there at 9am and riding til about noon or 1 when it gets mega hot. I may jump in the pool afterward to cool off , talked to Danny yesterday and he said he has the pool really nice now.

That's a cool little story man. Kind of odd how things change and turn around 35 years later huh?. Hangin' out and BS'n with Roger D would be a great day as well.

I look forward to it Larry, maybe one of the vintage events when Marty Smith is having a school and all those ole Pros come out? Danny (the new owner) has spent a small fortune cleaning up and now redeveloping this old moto-mecca. He's the nicest guy you could ever meet, and works every spare second of his life out there. If you guys can ever make it we can round up enough bikes for everyone to ride, just bring yer gear.

That's great news. Rio is such a historic place and a great MX track.

I grew up in H-town and did my very first race at Rio in 1983. I've been to the track a handful of times through the 90's and 00's and was always saddend by the state of dis-repair the facility was in. Hat's off to Larry for all the hard work in restoring Rio back to it's former glory.

I'll have to ask the owner, it's not mine.

But he will be there & he's a really good guy, so I'd say ya you get a few laps.

It's great to see what has become of Rio in recent years. If only the same thing could've happened to Whitney...

Looks like we're going to get a little rain, hopefully RIo will get some of it too!

Was out the toady & the track was really good, until mid afternoon & then they watered it to keep it in good shape, but I was toast by then with the 97% heat!

Bring lots of water & shade, I'll bring my little generator & a fan, bring your's too!
