Some good news I copied and, pasted

 LOS ANGELES —

California's insurance commissioner issued a temporary ban on companies canceling or not renewing home insurance coverage for people impacted by the devastating Palisades and Eaton wildfires burning in Los Angeles County.

The moratorium covers those within the perimeters of the fires and adjoining ZIP codes, whether the homeowners suffered a loss or not, for one year from Gov. Gavin Newsom's Jan. 7 emergency declaration.

As of Friday, officials have estimated that up to 5,000 structures were damaged or destroyed in the Eaton Fire burning in the Altadena area. More than 5,300 structures have been damaged or destroyed in the Palisades Fire, which has caused devastation in Pacific Palisades and Malibu.

“I am using my moratorium powers to prevent insurance companies from canceling or non-renewing policies in wildfire-impacted areas, so people don’t face the added stress of finding new insurance during this horrific event," Commissioner Ricardo Lara said in a release on Friday.

The Department said people can check to see if their ZIP code is included in the moratorium on its website.

Lara also called for home insurance companies to pause for at least six months any non-renewals or cancellations that were issued between Oct. 9 and Jan. 7. That would "provide the necessary stability for the communities near these wildfires to concentrate on safety, recovery, and rebuilding," the Department of Insurance said in a notice.

And Lara urged companies to extend a grace period for people impacted by the fires beyond a 60-day grace period.

Those without insurance and others in need of help and with questions can call the department at 800-927-4357.

The state should probably take on its own fully independent insurance program before it forces a private business to keep customers they don't want to keep.

At least the insurance companies are being held accountable to some degree.

Yeahhhh, kind of, or not really. The CFP will tell you that it's partially subsidized by insurance companies and not taxpayers, but is that really possible? As if the insurance companies won't be passing those additional expenses onto....taxpayers? At that point it starts to sound a lot like being sold tariffs, where maybe something is technically true, but effectively untrue.

Droughts hit the plain states approximately every quarter-century. They occur much more frequently in the area of California currently burning.

Large-scale farming techniques were relatively new in the 30's and folks in that part of the country were planting crops that weren't suitable (not because they were arrogant, because they were trying to make a living, and the federal government wanted them to). The droughts still occur in that region, but dust bowls don't because farmers learned how to mitigate the effects of those droughts.

There is absolutely no way for California to prevent droughts, but there are ways to mitigate the damage that occurs because of them. Emptying reservoirs used for fire protection isn't one of them.

Holy shit, has hell frozen over?!

The government (humans) got the farmers (also humans) to do something unnatural to that area of the environment which – as set up by the drought – triggered a radical change to the climate (the dust bowl).

I couldn't agree more!

Insurance companies can't pass their expenses on to taxpayers. They can only pass them on to their customers.

Yes but anyone with a loan is required to have insurance, plus most people without a loan have it anyway, because of the risk. You either pay for additional fees as a direct customer because you're a property owner, of you pay them indirectly as a renter. In effect, the vast majority of taxpayers, are paying for it.

My understanding is that State Farm, the insurer wanted to ramp up premiums to reflect the increased fire risk in  area, for all the reasons that are becoming apparent, but California said they couldn't , so they withdrew cover. I am reading 1600 properties affected, but i am sure someone closer to it will have better info.

Right now, i am thinking of all those in Lahaina that seem to have been forgotten, and looking at this thinking exactly the same has happened.

I just had a quick look at this and State Farm did not cancel the policy's they did not renew the policy's as they expired, big difference; most of the headlines that I have now seen are at best misleading to downright false. There was still an option if people chose to go through the so called Fair program but many may not have taken this up.

Below is a snip from a May 2023 article.

State Farm has stopped accepting homeowner insurance applications in California, citing the growing risk from catastrophes like wildfires and the rising cost to rebuild.

"State Farm General Insurance Company made this decision due to historic increases in construction costs outpacing inflation, rapidly growing catastrophe exposure, and a challenging reinsurance market," the insurance giant said in a statement on Friday.

"It's necessary to take these actions now to improve the company's financial strength," the company added.

Phil

You normally come across as a voice of reason, but not this time, insurers have every right to decline to renew a policy, if what I am seeing in correct one of the main reasons is because the local council had stopped clearing brush areas due to "environmental concerns" for the last couple of years, plus it looks like a lot of poor management was in play as per below.

Nick Sortor on X: "🚨 JUST IN: The Pacific Palisades reservoir was EMPTY AND OFFLINE when the firestorm exploded, per LA Times This is CRIMINAL. The reservoir holds 117 million gallons of water, and would’ve given firefighters ample pressure to effectively fight the blaze. Overpaid Dept. of https://t.co/afvRlbLJ73" / X

I have been part of the fire CFA fire brigade here in Australia and fought the Ash Wednesday bushfire where 75 people died and watched as the mismanagement of our state forest/national parks become the greens play thing and the mismanagement again was in full force just recently with the Black Saturday fires where over a 175 people died including two mates.

Can all the fires be stopped? No but better management of resources goes a long way in mitigating the effect, just locking up vast areas like they are doing here in Australia proves it time and again but unless you live in theses areas the inner city Greens have a lot of sway.

Again, if the below is true this bloke should be put away for a long time...................walking around with a MAP gas bottle to light up your reefer and no probable cause...............really??

Breaking911 on X: "LAPD states there is no probable cause to charge the man caught attempting to start fires with a blowtorch for arson. https://t.co/Dx2SwZdz6H" / X

Kenneth Fire Viral Video: Kenneth Fire arsonist suspect claims he was using blowtorch to smoke marijuana; detained by locals in dramatic video - Times of India

All the best for those affected as I know personally how hard it is.

Cmon, man how would you like it if Sydney or Melbourne burnt to the ground and we made a joke like that? Not cool dude.

Too soon?

It's sad for people who have lost their homes in the Palisades, but many "Malibu "homes" were owned by wealthy individuals, who did not reside there, at least one survived...

While this is good news for those affected.....however, it's only going to lead to insanely increased costs for everyone else and more companies pulling out of California.

LIke I said earlier, we can't blame the insurance companies for saying F.U. to California legislators who continue to hurt every business in this state.

Cant clear brush on your own property , and an area next to the sea has no water.

Brutal for those involved, but this is mismanagement at its finest.

Brutal for those involved, but this is mismanagement of funds at its finest.

With Honest Mr Newsom at the helm, I'm sure it will be a wash.

This all could have been prevented with last fire measures were implemented as stated.

So sorry for all of you effected by this tragedy. A sincere Prayer for those effected.

I left the LA area in 98. Glad I did. It’s sad going back home and, seeing most of my friends and, family struggling. The house I grew up in is now worth 900K. Totally unaffordable for the average family by todays standards.  The only person I know personally who’s doing somewhat decent, is a childhood friend who’s a police officer in Ventura County. He’s getting hosed and, jerked around by his department after coming back from a serious, on the job injury.

Though beautiful California beaches and, desert are my favorite places, I’ll never move back.

Love it or, leave it.

The beach was 15 minutes from my house. My family had a cabin 20 minutes away from Hungry Valley (Gorman) in a small town called , Frazier Park. A large part of my best memories are from California.

It’s really funny to me how much people hate Californians. Yes, there’s total dumb ass people for sure. The people voting in those dumb ass politicians aren’t a true representation on what a Californian is. They surely don’t represent me.

One thing that’s forgotten is how many people from other states migrated to California from other states in the 50’ & 60’s. My grandfather relocated his family from Pennsylvania. Originally from Germany.  Many in my neighborhood had parents from Oregon. My uncle was from Argentina. My step grandmother was from Japan. Makes for a lot of diversity in one household not to mention, multicultural influences within one household. Yet alone, one neighborhood. Not sure why I elaborated on this but, a high percentage of hate Californians get is, undeserved. The idiots in office, Fuckem. They deserve all the hate they’re currently getting for fucking up what was once a great state.

Australia is a similar size to the US. Except it is mostly flat desert with no water. A small slither of people mostly exists on some coastlines.

Australia has horrible bushfires. With less than 20 million people we still have horrific death tolls.

And land clearing of rainforest (emphasis on rain) still occurs here in a “first “ world nation.

Mother Nature? Don’t ask. She is a hard woman.

Best of strength and love to all of you affected in this terrible time 😢
