I have arthritis in big toe joint and my doctor is waiting to fuse the joint. Has anyone on here had this done? If so, how is riding/racing MX afterwards? I don’t want to do this if I won’t be able to continue riding. Any info would be appreciated…Thanks

Bro, just call the toe-truck, and go moto.
I had an older doctor at the VA about 10 years ago that wanted to fuse my big toe joint. That didn't seem like something for me, so I didn't do it. About two years ago, I was complaining about it to my Primary Care doctor. She sent me to the podiatry clinic again. Well, I got a new younger doctor and he suggested a plastic implant. Seemed logical and I got it done. No problems. I was concerned about walking and getting my shoes and MX boots on. Worked out for me.
Not sure about fusion, but I have Mortons Nueroma and it suck for almost everything. Makes me a brake dragger.

Where is Toeny?
He knows toes, bros
When my toes are buckled in my boots, they are basically fused…
This thread actually hits home for me. I've broken, dislocated toes on both feet. The big toe on my right foot is so damn ugly because I should've gotten it fixed 20 years ago(ligament is still torn off). Went to the DR a fews years ago to learn that the process to correct it is daunting, so I just deal with it's ugliness and pain.
There are amputee motocross riders, Bro!
Are you joking with us? You really think you won't be able to moto after your toe is fused?
I have a bunion the size of a f@#$&@ golfball on my big toe, also have had bouts of gout on same toe! Talk about pain…..I have to have my Gaerne boots stretched by a ski shop so I can wear them for any length of time….should be ok with a fused toe, like others have stated, once foot is in the boot, it’s basically fused…
I jammed mine bad enough to be purple and not walk the next day and I continued riding besides not shifting from the pain it’s a non issue basically.
My right big toe has been fusing it by its self. Lack of movement caused back pain and after getting checked out by back dr he sent me in for PT and during the 1st PT inspection he pointed it out to me. Off to my massage therapist and she went to work on it getting more movement and then back pain went away. Still trying to keep it moving.
The new plastic toe mentioned above is interesting.
Back to OP in a good MX boot the toes can not flex at all so what boots are you wearing?
One of our top riders here in South Africa had a freak mishap in the late 1980's. He flat landed hard and his left boot went under a root resulting in him losing his big toe. (Left foot)
He recovered, minus the toe and while it took time he got back to speed.
Good luck to you.
I rode with a fused big toe for a decade and never had an issue with it.
My main concern was riding on the balls of my feet and taking a hard landing. If the joint doesn’t move, would it possibly break the fusion if you cased a big jump or something? Glad to hear Renner153 say it’s not been a problems for him to ride with his fused.
I was more concerned about walking than riding with a fusion. Here is what mine looks like now. I have pretty good range of motion and the arthritic pain is gone. Recover was pretty quick, maybe two weeks.
had my foot put back together in 2020 and my 2,3,4 toes dont move after this, was racing 4 months after surgery and a year and a half later raced futures in 2022, my toes go numb randomly but doesnt affect riding.
how bad is your arthritis? in my opinion foot issues are less critical than hand issues
^^^^Dude ! Yee - ow god damn...
I find it amazing and also troubling that no matter what type of injury someone asks about in here, there's multiple people that say "oh yeah been there done that try this or that or some other thing". If anyone who doesn't ride stumbles across this site and any of these threads they'll think all dirt bike riders have lost their collective minds. 😄
Pit Row
Shattered my tib fib snowboarding in 2012 - lost the dorsiflexion in my big toe due to nerve damage & couldn't walk barefoot without stubbing my toe. In 2015 I went to a few "foot & ankle specialists" who wanted to fuse it. Their clientele was the 60+ crowd by the looks of the waiting room, so I got a 5th opinion and went to a Podiatrist. He suggested doing an MRI to figure it out as best as we could before just throwing the "fuse" card at it. Came up with the idea to use a carbon kevlar cadaver tendon that connects to my other 4 toes. Had 11 screws and a plate removed with that operation, and was boarding again in 2 months.
Give a podiatrist a shot if you haven't just yet.
Do you know what this procedure/implant is called? 2 weeks recovery sounds much better than a few months and definitely would prefer to keep the flexibility in the joint if possible.
My big toe and second toe have been fused since 2013 and I still ride frequently. My only real problem is getting the boot on. As you're inserting your foot into the boot the toes don't bend to make the transition. I had to switch to Tech 7's because they were the only boot I found that I could get into.
Man that looks brutal! Mine is getting pretty bad. I’ve been trying injections etc for about two years. Now I’ve jacked my knee up mountain biking. Probably because I’m positioning my foot weird. It’s inevitable that I’ve got to do something. Hopefully tune them both up the same time and be back on the bike by late spring.
