RIm and Spoke Question

Edited Date/Time 12/6/2024 1:39pm

My pops is in need of new rims and spokes, but is requesting the strongest rims available and same for spokes. Weight isn’t a worry for him, he just wants something strong that’s going to hold up. Hes gone through 3 front rims already. I’ve been out of the wheel game for a long time so thanks for the help in advance!

Excel A60's with Buchanan heavy duty stainless spoke set. Call Buchanan to make sure you get the correct nipples for the rims.

Glad to know Buchanan makes HD spokes. That was something he’s really wanted. A60 with oem spokes got a huge flat spot 3 rides in for him so hopefully the HD spokes help it hold up better

Buchanan spokes are solid, as are the Excel NS series (stay away from their XS aluminum spline drive nipples). Personally, I prefer D.I.D ST-X’s over the A60’s, but they’re both the strongest currently available…

Perfect answer.

Have been using Buchanans HD spokes since the 1980’s and they sell quality rims too.

He might want to try running a bib in the front if he isn't already as well.  They help absorb the big hits.

Yes, I went with the D.I.D ST-X hoops on my last bike because i didn't want the stripe like on the A60's.. No complaints. You can't go wrong with either.

Good question and good answers. A60 with hd spokes on stock ktm hubs work for us under heavy use.

Edit - oh, and they will fit on the new triumph which is likely to be our next 250.

I’d have to agree with the DID STX rims. Even the LTX rims hold up well and are a little lighter than the STX.
The A-60’s are strong, but the finish kinda starts looking rough a lot faster than the DID rims.

Spline drive aluminum nipples are junk, lots of busted nipple heads over the years on friends that used them. Stainless nipples are the way to go

What was the failure of the front wheels? Spokes or rim and on what bike?

Build quality has a lot to do with the life of the wheel.  OEM's typically use machine built wheels and I've seen some horendous builds particularly on KTM's, but in the right hands they can be salvaged and be quite reliable.  Assuming the person knows what they are doing, you won't beat an A-60 and in almost all cases OEM spokes.  I think even at a pro level you can build some killer wheels with less expensive components but if weight and money is no option in the right hands thats what I'd go with.

Rims getting huge flat spots. 3 Excel now on his 24 YZ450. Went through multiple Excels on each of his RMZ’s as well. Ruined an A60 within the first 3 rides.

Jesus, what does he weigh? I’ve never heard of anyone destroying rims like that.

Typically it's woods or off road guys destroying front rims.  I don't think you will get much better than an A 60.  Now you've piqued my curiosity. I'm assuming its the entire rim cross section thats bent and not just the virtical side walls?  If the rears are holding up and they are buillt by the same guy, pops might just being going too big.  There is a certain point where increased tire pressure won''t save you.

Sounds like he needs to up the trie pressure a bit. Flat sporting wheels out of shear brute force isn't something a nearly 60 year old ride is capable of, expert or not. Is he doing this off-road or on a motorcycle track?

I flat sport fronts all the time around here, but my local moto track is very rocky. My Stark, Kx450, and YZ all have big dingers in the front rim....just roll with it haha.

I’ve known bigger riders but everything has a design limit. Maybe he’s just finding it? Or tire pressure/track conditions as others have said. A60s are freaking stout.

He usually runs between 15 and 17psi since anything less it happens even faster, lol. And this is riding moto.

I'm gonna recommend a solid titanium disc wheelset.

Check out Talon engineering rims and wheels set. They are made from 7075 aluminium and they say that they are stronger than A60 rims. Don't know how true it is, but Talon is a legit company, they subcontract for HRC, Ariel cars and more. You can get the set built with bulldog spoke also.

I bought a set last year and they are still perfect. I used to get flat spot on stock rim. I think I got 20% off with my first order, don't know if they still do it. I'll buy from them again when I'll need a set.
