I think the biggest improvement that could be made for smx is to have the playoffs actually be playoffs, and to remove the gimmicky points system, so I had an idea
It would require combining 250/450
Round 1 would be the top 60 riders from both classes. 3 Moto’s, riders only race in 1 Moto
Moto 1 would be 1,4,7,10th qualifiers all the way through the 58th qualifier
Moto 2 would be 2,5,8,11, ending with the 59th qualifier
Moto 3 would be 3,6,9,12 and ending with the 60th qualifier
Using 2024 as an example, sexton would race Moto 1, hunter would be in Moto 2, and Haiden would be in Moto 3
the top 14 from each Moto move on to round 2, for the others, you’ve been eliminated from the playoffs
Round 2
21 riders in the first Moto, the top finishers from each of the round 1 Moto’s. This Moto would be the top 7 riders from each previous round Moto
The second Moto would be made up of the riders that finished 8-14th at the previous round
10 riders from both Moto’s qualify, the 22 riders that didn’t qualify will race the 3rd Moto, essentially an LCQ. Only 2 riders qualify, the 20 non-qualifiers are removed from the playoffs
The 3rd and final round is a standard triple crown for the finale, winner takes all
In between each Moto they would do what they do now, 65,85,futures
I’m so confused, and I don’t even know a single part of your post I understood.
Alright, let me try to make it more clear
60 riders qualify for round 1 playoff of the smx
Qualifying is based on total season points
Top 60 combined 250/450 are invited to round 1 of smx
Round 1 will be 3 Moto’s, the catch is that each rider will only race 1 Moto
Meaning, the Moto 1 lineup will be different from the Moto 2 lineup, and Moto 3
The top qualifier from the regular season will race Moto 1, the second qualifier will race the second Moto, and the third qualifier will race the 3rd Moto
14 riders from each Moto will qualify for the second round, 18 riders will be eliminated from the playoffs
———————
Round 2 will consist of the 42 riders that made it through round 1
Moto 1 and Moto 2 will have different rider lineups, again, the Moto 1 group will not be racing against the Moto 2 group
the top 10 from each Moto will qualify for the finale.
The 11 riders from Moto 1 and the 11 riders from Moto 2 who did not qualify, will race a 3rd Moto. This is the last chance to make the final round, only 2 riders qualify, the others will not be in the finale
——————
After 2 rounds of playoffs, of the initial 60 man field, only 22 have made it through the playoffs into the final round
Nothing gimmicky about the final round, 3-Moto format, triple crown style. The winner is the SMX champion.
Yeah…We can call it
“Who knows what the fucks going on cross”!

I’m too drunk to taste this chicken.
I like it, tweak so there are two motos
I like it and it's actually quite easy to understand, despite the first couple replies.
All this shit just to have the same 2-3 riders racing for the win
While you are most likely correct, i do think this opens the door for something different
one crash and Jett could be out of the playoffs
mixing in the 250 riders could also shake it up
I get what you're saying, and it's not a bad idea. The only part I really don't like is Round 2's first 2 motos only having 7 guys each. I get your reasoning (make moto 3 closer to a wild card playoff), but unless the track is like the McGrath Invitational track, only 7 guys racing wouldn't be all that fun.
Good idea. Not hard to understand really. I think running only one class is a great idea.
Whoa not 7 guys unless my math or explanation was way off
42 guys make it out of round 1
Round 2 has a Moto of 21 guys
A second Moto of 21 different guys
And a 3rd Moto of 22 riders, these are the guys from moto1 and moto2 that finished 11th-21
Part of the problem with this idea is that too many riders get injured. This year, they were barely able to get a full field for the last 250SMX race.
I totally misread that then. This makes a lot more sense.
I dont like the fact that if you have one bad moto, you are out. I doubt the factories or the riders would like it either.
The easiest way to make smx become the real playoffs would be to just remove the title from sx and mx and only give the title to the guy who wins smx in each class. Thats how actual playoffs work. In the nfl you dont get a championship for being the regular season winner and another title for winning the superbowl, no you get the championship after having a good enough regular season to make it into the playoffs and then making it to the superbowl and winning. Hockey, basketball, baseball are all the same just with a best-of series instead of a single game.
I’m not saying I want this to happen, I’m just saying that this is what would make it become a real playoff.
The reason it doesnt feel like a real playoff now is because youre giving away separate titles for series which are longer than smx, making them more important. The point of a playoff is that its supposed to be the most important part of the season. Right now smx is just 1 series out of 3 but the one with the least races. If instead of this its changed so the mx and sx season are only used as the way to get enough points to qualify for smx, and whoever wins that becomes the champion, then you have a real playoff. The fans/feld/the ama/riders…etc are going to have to decide if we want to go in this direction and become a lot more like ofher sports or do we like the system we have been using for so long and want to tf to keep it but with some small tweaks. Well find out in time.
Having playoffs is stupid. This is racing not some game.
Actually you do get a title for winning the regular season (Division Champion, NFC/AFC Champion). They even hang banners for those un-important titles.
Pit Row
That’s what playoffs are.
how is combining the classes making it a more competitive field to get into worse the how it is now running separate classes?
Sorry, Zookrider.
Or, rather than chasing NASCAR into the toilet, look to series that are gaining popularity instead of losing because of bad gimmicks in place of good racing?
Sigh
At the final round you end up with 22 riders - only difference is that it’s both 450/250 riders
You end up with the best of the best
