Tallon Vohland vs Ricky Carmichael

While we are in a holding pattern for MX action, I was thinking about past MX history and the return of Tallon Volhand from the GP’s (circa 1999-2000). I thought his racing with the “kid” Ricky Carmichael was absolutely fantastic. I hope someone else returns in a few years to do the same (some kid named Zach Osborne perhaps?)

Volhand show unbelievable corner speed after racing the GP’s and was a lot older then an Osborne (will be) by the time he returned. He dam near won the 125cc National Championship from Ricky. Volhand doesn’t seem to get much respect on this board and sure deserves it. Does anyone else think this was a great series?

Those were some great races. I remember during one ( Dont remember which one exactly) when they were interviewing Chad Watts, he wanted Ricky to be careful because Talon was swapping all over the place and Watts was afraid Talon might take them both out. Talon definately had some speed. Kinda cocky in his interviews though.

Anyone remember Brownies corner speed after returning from Europe? Seems racing in Europe makes some of these guys faster. Didn't Brown win a C/ship when he came back?

I agree, Brown's corner speed was off the chart when he returned. This may start a GP guys are faster in corners then the AMA jumpers disagreement.

I was just digging around to see what I could find on Tallon Vohland since this USGP sparked up some renewed us faster than them b.s. all over again. This little gem of a thread from 2008 popped up near the top of my google search. Jump for show, corner for dough. Those GP riders do tend to shine in the corners don't they? Kind of reminds me of Everts up on the pegs passing Stewart a while back.

Back to Vohland, his ass was on the gas that season on a white FMF Honda if I remember correctly. Good times!

Vohland definitely brought some excitement to a season nobody expected there to be much.

I don't care what anyone says, we lost something when 125s went away. Especially in the outdoors.

I don't know what that has to do w/this thread outsider but that's a French kid named Valentin Teillet. He's barely a top 10-15 GP guy. I think he's had one top 10 this year but he does show flashes of decent speed at times. Like at Locket last year he pulled a 5 th overall out of his hat.

Thanks for the info. I was just throwing this up there in response to the post about GP riders being fast in the corners.

This guy was faster than anyone in a section I was focused on. Didn't know who he was.

Tallon was on fire early that year. I think it was Hangtown he won?

He did get dinged up and didn't finish out the series quite as strong though.

The older I get the faster I was.
Vohland passed Carmicheal in one moto at Glen Helen in 99. Then he slid out in the next moto and Ricky turned the lights out

No dude it was closer than that. He won at Budds and gave RC a good run until he got injured. Of course he didn't seal the deal against RC, no one could his entire career, but give credit where it's due.

I vividly remember watching Vohland battle with Ricky. That was just when I was gaining interest to this sport, and Ricky was my idol. But damn, did they have some good battles!

JW381..The problem was 90% of the 125 class back then seemed to idolize RC as well so nobody would even try to battle with their idol. Tallon on the other hand didn't idolize him so in Tallons eyes (unlike the rest of the class) RC was beatable.

99 sx went bad for TV... It was unbelievable the effort he put into the Nationals. Dude would ride twice a day at 2 different tracks, and race whatever local shit that was running... Friday night, Sat night, Sunday... Worked like a dog... and it paid off with a few battles with RC and a PC deal! Most guys get passed by RC, very few can say, yeah, I battled with him a bit...
