Just placed an order at Partzilla for the minor parts needed. Have a few additional questions about the rear shock that I'm hoping you fellas can offer help with. First, this "Shock Push Rod" shown in the attached photo, I didn't see one come out of my shock at disassembly. I'm assuming it's located within that shaft? What is the purpose of this rod?

Also, the adjusting knob also highlighted, is this removable to replace? I tried like hell but cannot get it to move. It's rusted in pretty good so I have the PB Blaster soaking overnight. I believe this is the shock rebound adjustment??shockkk 0.jpg?VersionId=lzbOmbW.f7xEKkUI

I might be wrong, but I think it's used to adjust compression dampening, there should be an adjuster (#13?) at the bottom to adjust the rod up or down the shaft.

CMS has some in stock...

IMG 0340 0.jpg?VersionId=FYDJust a few updated pics on the restore. Frame painted with Rustoleum Rust Converter then topped with VHT Roll Bar paint. I decided to paint the engine mounts and cylinder head yellow for something different.IMG 0330 1

If I remember correctly, (not sure) The rod going down the shaft is for dampening adjustment.  Should come out and be movable when the shock is apart.  The compression adjuster should come off, If it has a plasic cap, be very carefull, if it breaks you will never find another one. There are several shops that do vintage YZ shocks.  If in doubt, send it to one of them.

Anyone know what gold spray paint will match the gold colored rims from this year? Or even the color code?

Yeah, the adjuster cap is gone and the internal adjustment mechanism is what's rusted out. So I'm boned there I think. I did manage to get that damper rod out but it took some effort. I cleaned it up, the rod and internals, and reinstalled.

I'd love to buy that but a grand is way over my budget! I'm just going to rebuild what I got.

Ebay, keep looking, you will find one cheap, between the two, you will have one good one.

I don’t remember doing it on this style shock and it has been years since I had to disassemble one but to have the shaft rechromed I had to remove the side clicker flange and adjuster rod. Tricky part will be where reinstalling to stop threading the end on so the entire adjustment range of clicks still works correctly.

It is a floating piston so you really needed to know where the piston spec location where the piston had stopped prior to disassembly. I used a digital caliper to measure location after removing the rubber plug end bolt. Does the Yamaha repair manual give specs for this?

You can purchase the needle that has a Scharer  valve on it so it screws on the nitrogen bottle pressure T adjuster. I have one here someplace but any good suspension shop should have it since Ohlins and WP used this style.

I dropped the shock off today at Pro Action for a rebuild. I figured I'll let the pros handle it! Next up, trying to lace these goddamn rims with new spokes. I must have tried ten times already but it doesn't seem right! I "THINK" I may have gotten the rear wheel but the damn front wheel is driving me nuts!

Anyone know of a diagram for doing this that show what spokes go where? I've tried to match up with photos but something still seems off.

Not saying to buy the shock, I feel 1200 is a fair price for a new oem 83 YZ125 shock. A Noleen Shock wouldn't be cheaper

I have an 83 YZ250 shock sprung for 185 lbs. It's an original low-hour unit. It works well. I got 2nd at Unadilla and four tops 3's at Mid Ohio with it.
I could be talked out of it.  It's been hanging on the wall since I picked up a used Ohlins a year ago.

Dammit, max, you’re a day late on the offer! I dropped my shock off at Pro Action yesterday for a rebuild!

The further I get into this rebuild the more off the wall things I'm finding! Pulled the motor apart finally and see the previous owner used a tranny from a 1982 YZ125 as well as the clutch inner boss. I've decided to use the bottom end I bought a few days after picking up the bike as it's in much better shape than the one in the bike. It must have the 83 tranny as the boss would not fit on the shaft (5x4 model)! I had to do some fishing and finally found a year specific model. The generator coil on the flywheel side was also pieced together. I found a new one in the UK for $260!

I guess this is to be expected in a 41 year old bike. Some people will just throw any part at it to ride but someone like me, who wants it original, gets screwed in the end! It will be an authentic put together 1983 when I'm done, though!

Also been trying for over a friggin week to get the front wheeled laced! I bought some aftermarket spokes and nothing I try is working out! I ended up buying a set of wheels from ebay so I'll have to use the front as the template! The rear is done but I found and used authentic Yamaha spokes!

Pics coming soon!

Guys, I noticed an open hole on the case below the clutch lever that I'm unsure if it gets a bolt or not. I think this may be for a chain guard??? Pic is below. Also, anyone know if another year kicker will work on the 1983 YZ125?

correct-that hole was for a plastic chain guard, there should be a thread hole in the frame also right above the swingarm pivot bolt.

This aftermarket kickstarter claims to fit 1977 to 2018 YZ125s...

1977 to 2018 YZ125 OEM kickstarters may also fit!

I have yet another issue that popped up today. I had to order a new generator from the UK as the one that was on the bike was junk! I ordered the 39w version which fits the 83-85 YZ125’s. When trying to mount it today, the mount bars that attach to the stator  plate are not the same as the generator tops on the 84. The 84 generators have an angled part where the 83’s where straight.

The mounting bars are not sold as separate pieces as far as I can tell. I can possibly modify these I gave if I can get the pin out so I can adjust the plates. Pics attached.

The 83 is in the bottom.

Anyone have any advice here?

Ok, guys, a few pics of the progress if anyone cares. Noticed one thing today when I went to repack the silencer....you can't repack it!! I see no rivets to remove to get to the interior. Does anyone know if you can, in fact, repack these???

You would have to cut it open and reweld it!

f1000400317.1

You may have to go aftermarket.

Yeah, that's what I did. Found a DG silencer on DC Plastics for $225 and picked it up. The closer I get the finishing the build the more cash is coming out of the pocket! Dammit!

I'm still concerned about the generators. If they fail to light the bike off, more cash to go out for the HPI ignition. It's impossible to find those damn 39w - 1984 - bracket mounts. There's one on ebay but the d-head wants $290 for it! Kiss my arse I say!

The build looks incredible.  Keep the pics coming.

As far as the electrical componants, or any parts, just give it time.  If you have searched part numbers and other models that had the same part, and there are none out there, then just give it time.  This winter someone will be parting something out that has those.  There is a used one in Canada for $185 right now.  I would doubt that you are looking to ride it in the next few weeks and its still an "if" the generators will not work.  Ebay always surprises me when I keep searching, something that I really need and should be worth hundreds will pop up from someone for twenty bucks.

Should have contacted pro form for the exhaust system. Jemco would have been good as well whoever is making those now.

Got the rear shock back today from Pro-Action. Kind of looks a bit off kilter with the blue spring but I couldn't find anything yellow or black in 5.7kg.

They were able to get the dampener knob off with great effort. They had to make me another adjuster to fit in there as the original was destroyed. I need to find a cap for that somewhere.

Pic attached of the updates. Yes, I know the seat cover has wrinkles. I'm working on that as we speak!!!wawa1

After all the time you spent on this the blue spring would drive me crazy, I would take it off and paint black or white

Some updated rebuild pics for those interested.

Got the motor ready to go for when LA Sleeve returns my cylinder. Fingers are crossed the stator is going to work the way I had to set it up. Also put a shock cover on the blue spring. It looks better! I also found the correct size "mono-x" swing-arm decals!! Check out the number plate and backgrounds! The side plates will have the same look as the front! Anyone interested in these can go here: https://www.factoryridedecals.com/yamaha-yz125-1983-pre-printed-background-decals-black-with-yellow-numbers-by-factoryride.html This guy does outstanding work!
