It was the American Border that stopped him/parents.
I hope he rides for Canada again but I think his ties to Scotland or the UK are stronger. Wouldn't be suprised to see him flip.
If Zach Osborne can ride for Puerto Rico at the Nations then surely Dean can ride for his birth country?

Pretty sure his uncle posted on a Scottish forum at the time of his selection for Canada last year that he really wanted to ride for GB but the canadians came knocking first.

The KX that he rode at the nations is still in Scotland, got to see him riding at Drumclog and Doune last year and have to say he blew me away. Fantastic talent.

Just reading through "moto"(a british mx magazine) ,and Steve Dixon who is the Team Manager for GB at the des nations wants Searle,Anstie and Wilson to ride for the team. He went on to say that Wilson can ride for GB as he was born over here.

Pretty good team. Dean would be better off riding for GB instead of riding in the B-final for Canada Wink ......

Anyone want to ask Dean , next time they interview him?

It had BETTER be MX1 Stewart, MX3 which ever American did the best in the 450 championship, and MX2 which ever American did the best in the 250 championship.

One you ride for a country, isn't that it -- you can't switch now? That's the way it is in World Cup soccer, which is why New York-born Giuseppe Rossi can never play for the USA, because he's already played internationally for Italy, where he moved when he was 14.

My two quid: Dear Wilson may be a Scot, who moved to Canada and lives in Cali, but for MXoN purposes, he should always be a Canadian now.

can't remember year MXo(des)N held in france the french had like a B team race under the andorran flag (little country b/w france & spain good for ski ing) .
this team had little match boxes with what looked like an aerial sticking out the top to mimic the american team who had transmitters so they could hear orders from the team manager.
like f1 has only one way. they have since been banned

Davey I don't think there is a FIM rule that states a rider is tied to one country post representation.

Hasn't De Dycker offered his services to the Dutch after being dropped from the Belgian squad last year? Wasn't Pastrana going to ride for Puerto Rico after representing the USA but had to cancel due to US rally championship commitments?

Didn't Billly Liles or Trampas Parker race for Italy once?

And Osborne raced for Puerto Rico.

As has already been stated its done on passport so if you have a duel passport you could ride for either country. I understand why he represented Canada as they were the ones to give him the chance as an unproven kid but Im sure he would have wanted to ride for the UK. Having spoken to some of his family thats the impression I got anyway. As a born Scot I think it was a bit weird watching him ride for them, bit like watching Greg Rusedski drape himself in a Union Jack, just a bit weird.

But wasn't he 6 and still in diapers when he left ScotlandSmile Doesn't matter anyway. If he was born in the country, he should be allowed to race for it if asked. Canada asked him and he did us proud winning the b-final. Too bad the rest of our team had some bad luck (they were on their way to qualifying when a clutch problem and a crash ruined it) and we didn't make the a-final. C'est la vie.

David, what determines which sports "England" contests in its own right and those it contests as part of "Great Britain"? For instance: MXdN is GB while Cricket is England, Olympic Games is GB while Football (soccer) is England - except at the Olympic Games I guess(?).

Searle, Anstie and if you could get Wilson, would easily be your best team...

Simpson is good, but those three are a step above...

Doesn't really matter who he rides for because he can't do it himself. The rest of Canadian motocross can't get their shit together. We very rarely send our best team because of politics, conflicting races and lack of funding.

Agreed.

Anyway he's not Canada's, he's Alberta's, where all the great Canadian racers come from. Wink

Football is contested as seperate " countries" because all 4 home nations have a seperate seat ( thus vote) at the governing body FIFA.
Great Britian does not play football in the olympics because it would mean having a GB team for all other games, which some other countries would like because they would only have one vote, except it is being considered as a one off for the up coming games being held in London

front cover, page 3, top of the page with your mug shot

"United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland"

GB is England, Scotland and Wales
UK is GB and Ulster
British Isles is UK plus Eire

if Wilson has a Canadian passport, then he has dual nationality at present, but before age 23 must make a final decision which passport to keep. If he chose UK, he could even ride for Ireland because the Irish motor cycle federation covers the entire island and thus takes in both UK and Paddy passports; in fact very few papists from south of the border have ever represented Ireland and they even included Shaun Simpson's dad Willie a few years ago. Come to think of it Ireland could race with Deano and Jeff Ward !

sorry Davy, no rule about "one life, one country only" in FIM statutes.

Jacky Martens rode for Belgium and Luxembourg before you Yankees cry-babyed about Chad Parker riding for Italy and Billy Liles Luxembourg in 1989 and nearly costing you the win.

even after the rule change to passport qualification, Willie Simpson, who had ridden for ACU (GB ) in 1984, rode for MCUI (Ireland) mid-90s

funny how you guys didn't want the passport rule until Jeff Ward quit Pro MX. Perhaps we should backdate the rule and disqualify the US from 1983-84-85-87-88-89-90 for fielding an ineligible player. ;-)

I believe (in the olympics) you are allowed to switch once. Then you can't switch again.

hairy UK is NOT GB and Ulster :- it's GB & Northern Ireland
Northern Ireland is 6 counties ie Antrim Armagh Down Londonderry Fermanagh & Tyrone.
Ulster is the same 6 counties plus 3 from South ie Monaghan Cavan & Donegal
Ireland usually field the best 3+1 riders regardless weather they are from the North or South
