Is the CR500 the greatest Dirt Bike of all time?

Don't know if it's the ''greatest', but it definitely ranks up there as being one of my favorite bikes that I've raced. Then, they eliminated the class. Boo!

I like to work on my bikes and the CR500 was so rock solid that I often found myself with nothing to do but lube the chain and clean the air filter.  I did get pretty good at changing rear tires, though. Lol

I can name a couple that aren’t greatest of all time………1973 Suzuki TM 400 and TM 250!

In my world, the CR500 is definitely my favourite bike, and I raced various iterations of them from '86 to the mid-naughts.  That being said, a question like that posed on the original post is, from my perspective, the wrong one to ask.  Given that motocross (and motorcycle racing in general) is very much dependent on the ability and input of the rider, I think the question should be more like "Were Open-class riders the greatest group of MX racers of all time?"  I think the answer to that is a definite "yes".  And, let's face it, they didn't eliminate the class because it was too easy.

With that in mind, I'd love to see Chase Sexton ride an Open bike - with his frame, fitness and style, I think he represents a bit of of a throw-back to the days when most riders looked like fire-plugs as in this pic:

What was your first true dirt bike?  If we’re honest, that bike is the great Dirt Bike of all time.
