9 years 9 months 9 days RIP Coop
We picked Trooper (his shelter name) up to take him to an adoption event and when we 1st brought him home on Friday afternoon I actually commented to Kathy that I do not think taking him to this adoption event was going to work because he was terrified and scared to death !
After 30 minutes with us at home he was a complete different happy dog tail wagging running around the back yard with Laci and loving life again.
He was not adopted and after Kathy took him back to the shelter on Monday she called me crying on her way to work. I told her to turn around and we adopted him.
I renamed him after Guy Cooper
Since Kathy was the president of the shelters volunteer group she had access to see his past. He was adopted as a puppy from the shelter and a little over a year later returned to the shelter so we knew his approximate age. He was in the shelter for 6 months and if he wasn’t adopted he would be put down.
A week ago I noticed Coop started bleeding a little from his mouth and the next day it continued. We had already made an appointment with the regular vet but we took him to an emergency vet and they said it was a growth in his mouth that was bleeding and it was probably cancer. After seeing the regular vet they talked about doing a biopsy on it and possible cancer treatment if it was cancer. With his age of 13 they really didn’t want to sedate him.
After a couple days of consideration we both knew it was time to do the hard part.

Thanks guys Sadly it has been about 2 years since we had to do this to his sister after she got sick who had also came from the shelter.
Never not had cats, or a good dog in my home.
It's a cruel fact of life that their age spans are so short compared to ours.
I'm sure every person here has been in the OP's shoes.
Being put into that time of decision making.
It sucks.
And every person here has their memory jogged by his post.
I always remind myself the days I come home and my constant companion of the past 15- 18 years is not there any longer, that nothing can replace them.
But your that home is desperately needed by another animal.

I'm sorry. It's so painful to lose these loved ones. I have a cat with an inoperable mouth tumor and only has days, 2 others that are very old but doing ok but won't be long and my perfect rotti boy Mac has two large masses crushing his bladder and he is not doing great. I'll probably go with them.

This is broly, who she lost 2yrs ago.
One week he's a healthy old dude, next week he's gone.
She's still a wreck over losing her hiking partner and protector.
He always tried to stay between the two of us.
We always joked that he thought I was trying to move in on his GF.

Very sad to hear. The best day is when you get them and worst when you put them down. But worth it everyday.
Oh man, I'm not sure how much more sad news I can take, but sorry to hear about Cooper. Your wife is a gem for bringing him home and is a stronger person than me...
I could never work at a shelter, as I would want to bring all the dogs home....

Sorry to hear.... I hate that part of being a dog / cat owner. The last pet we had to put down was our 13 y/o cat, Foxy. She was my wife's cat, but she always hung out with me on the couch or laid on me in the bed. I cried like a baby when we had to make the hard decision. And I didn't consider myself a cat person. Not that I didn't like cats, I just always preferred dogs. RIP Coop, and God speed over the rainbow bridge.
Rip Coop. You gave him a life filled with love and joy and now he is in doggy heaven. You are a good man Lumpy.
