Danny was always a hero of mine. Not that I wanted to ride like him, the crash photos of him were horrifying. But to have the heart and determination he had was always something I worked at. This is very sad news for me, it will be a tough day. And I can't get the image of him out of my head where he had crashed at the southwick national and he raced on hard as ever with his bars bent down to his fork tube! I don't know if there is a heaven, but it's times like this that I hope there is. If so, I'm sure you are finally riding again. Danny, you will be missed.

FAAAAAAAAKKKKKK!!!!!!!!!!!!

He was just about to get the new custom van too. Aww Magoo, we finally met at Budds and I was the ONLY guy wearing your shirt. You KNOW how much you meant to me. I love you man, a true old school 'berserker" in the vein of Mikkola, Hansen, Carlqvist, Kavinov and Moiseev. Magoo was among the guys who showed us what was truly possible to do on a motorcycle.

RIP DC, and God bless you and thank you for the thrills and fond memories. Prayers go out to your family and close friends.

What horrible news to wake up to this morning.

I feel lucky to have seen him race at the peak of his career.

RIP, Magoo.

I was there 20 ft away watching this photo shoot in amazement. I forget which magazine it was for but this pic made the cover i think. This shit was incredible back then. You could only see someone do that stuff on a bike if you watched magoo. I used to hit that wall all the time on my 60 or 80 and dream of doing it just like magoo did.

Oh man what a way to start my day--I can't believe this!!!!!!!!! Sad

Like others have said he was the greatest and had No Fear whatsoever.

He rode the crap outa his machines and always was the ultimate Showman.

DanDunes, how ironic I was there that day too for the photoshoot at Indian Dunes, International Track. It was during the week, for Dirt Bike Magazine and he was jumping and doing insane moves over & over.

That is when they removed the gas tank and he did a jump too!

This is a very sad day.....

RIP Danny--you will be missed...

Damn it all....never again will I not call someone when I get that feeling in my gut. I owed him a phone call..he can't be gone. Danny changed my life. I have told him (and many others) that after first meeting him at Glen Helen about 5 years ago that he changed the way RiderDown would work to help injured riders. SCI, TBI and other life altering injuries became top priority. He opened my eyes to many issues. I couldn't believe it when we first met. I mean the guys a freakin' legend, he had been a hero of mine for years even though he was only 3 days older than me. Jody W. described him to me before we met as being "like a hemorrhoid - you never know when he's going to flare up" and that was certainly true. He saw the need for safety in this sport and championed that cause for years, let's not forget that part of his legacy. Danny was passionate about the things he loved...and he loved Motocross.

Godspeed Danny...R.I.P. You will be missed greatly but remembered forever!

It's still amazing to look at pics from 30 years ago and see what he was doing, and that amazement is a wonderful tribute to him and what he brought to the sport, fun and joy and incredible skill and courage.

Man, this is so sad. I first read the rumor last last night, but then read it wasn't true. I was hoping to login this morning and find it deleted like a bad dream.

I was a young kid, just riding for a few years when Danny pulled off the amazing de nations wins. He was mine and my fathers favorite rider. I remember screaming so loud for him at the first SX I went to that I lost my voice the rest of the day, but it was worthwhile since he came over to our section. I also remember him doing much more for the fans than anyone else there that day.

I always wanted to talk to him in recent years when I've seen him at the races. If for nothing else than to tell him thanks for all the great memories. Every time I left a race he was at I regretting not talking to him. I really regret not doing this now.

It made me sick when I read earlier in this thread that he may have passed while alone at his house. For someone who has given so much of himself for others, not just during his racing career but after, that just seems so wrong.

I hope his legacy will not only be remembered for his on track accomplishments, but include his work for safety in the more recent years. IMO, that only furthers his status as a true legend and hero of the sport.

Godspeed Danny, and my condolences to to his family.

Magoo was a legend! I remember picking up Dirt Bike Magazine and reading about his perfect moto score at the 1982 Motocross Des Nations and Trophee Des Nations-- and thinking he was the best in the world at that point.
So sad to hear this...

An absolute legend. He certainly deserved more than he got, but Danny sure made an impact. What a hard charger. What an innovator.

I hope his safety message is not lost. It sounds like he was gearing up to do some really good things.

Godspeed

I was just watching videos of him with my wife last night!!! I was excited for him to get his new van. Sitting here thinking about how I wanted to call him up and chat with him about motocross. I have been thinking about doing it for months but didn't want to bother him. This sucks. RIP Danny

I know exactly what ya mean Bobby Lee. Went for my morning bicycle ride and I swear chunks of space and time were missing. I'd be looking down at my feet and then look up and wonder, "How the heck did I get to here already." Going to work now and gonna be rocking my Magoo t-shirt. Long live the Wild Man.
