The thread is about making amateur moto better. My opinion is that it’s lame for that to be the experience one has on am day. Especially THAT one.
A caller called into Pulp and expressed how lame it was.
They discuss business models of longer motos and less classes along with the trend towards off-road.
Then A Mart comes on and talks about how with the current pro national model, the amateur day and camping is the path to making a profit.
It’s known that the US amateur Mx model is broken for the riders, which then hits the local promoters.
There is a guy who runs the biggest am race in the world, which prides itself on longer motos, who has direct communication with national (and regional and area) promotors, whose dad built High Point, and who could shift the entire amateur model in one stroke, and offer up a badass High Point (and all Am Day) event.
It seems like there are ample opportunities to make amateur motocross better for the riders.
That’s how you grow the sport.
It's spelled Amateur.
I really like the idea of an Ironman class, I would pay to race that all day.
I would rather race one 6 lap moto than 2 x 3 lap motos.
There are way too many classes. Its become obnoxious.
Who wants to race three people ?
I also think they groom the track too much, but I'm sure that wont be a popular opinion.
Wrong again, I’ve won races, big whoop. It’s still boring and ridiculous sitting around all day waiting for your 8 minute moto.
motocross is 30+2 x2. Amateurs are 7 minutes x 2?
olympic level 400m run is 400m right? High school 400m is guess what 400m.
amateur motocross being 8 minute races and sitting around all day for it is horrible.
Wait what? Nothing smaller than 85’s should race? Lol

okay,
So technically maybe mx sports didn't run amateur day at highpoint.
Must have been racer productions.....lol
Same people.
same equipment.
If you don't really think Carrie Jo, Davey, and Rita or key MX sports staff were there running it you are a bit niave.
The guy that called into pulp was Randy Poulter(sp?), the track builder for the national. Doubt he had anything to do with running am day other than being on equipment.
Not sure the people that run LL's are interested in "fixing" am mx. If you are running the biggest cash cow in the sport, you probably don't see much of a problem.
LL's is a unique and special event that they have built into the world's biggest am event.
But between it and the AMA's lame ass advancement system that punished riders for racing locally, Am motocross is weak.
Sure, so and so track had 800 entries, That is not that common, and is usually associated with a one off event like a LL qual.
The biggest complaint is the long/day/short moto/too many classes.
It is simple.
a promoter has to make x amount to cover overhead and make a reasonable profit.
Comparing MX to cross country is pretty simple when just talking about entry fees and ride time.
For a promoter there is a huge difference in the cost to run the events. MX staff and track prep expenses are a lot more.
MX promoters offer more classes to get more entries and offer more choices to their customers.
If they do cut classes, they are probably not going to keep the same number of entries overall.
The only overhead that will drop is the awards that you give out. If you base the number of awards on entries that change would be minimal.
it boils down to, if there were half the classes and twice the track time, entry fees would probably be about double to cover the fixed expenses of running a well organized, safe event.
While I understand you guys are customers, and it is easy to offer up solutions to solve all the sports problems, it is hard for promoters that are probably hanging on by a pretty thin thread to try changes, especially when they have seen some maybe try new stuff and lose in the process.
It is a tough dilemma. Here is the reality.
entry level grass roots racing in the US is on life support.
A covid boom gave it a shot in the arm, but wait until the next economic hiccup and see how it goes.
That’s why I like off-road races much more. More seat time in less hours of the day.
racing MX is an all day adventure to get maybe 40 minutes of track time.
whereas you go race offroad, like a harescramble. You sign up online, show up an hour ahead of the race, checkin, get dressed, go to the line, race 1.5-2 hours, load up and change and go home. Worst case it’s 4 hours and you get 2 hours of seat time.
Back in the 90''s I am almost certain the Coombs family ran the Am day at high point. I don't know about now as I have not been there since 2000. but the main reason we quit going was cause of too many classes, no laps, the guys dropping from local A class just to run c and score a high point plaque.
