Racing with no commentary

Last week there was a point in the race where both weege and stew stopped talking and it ended up lasting like 4-5 seconds. I noticed another shorter pause this weekend where nobody was talking and all you could hear was the sounds of the race…. and it was actually nice.

Were so used to hearing them have to talk at all times and for them they feel super pressured to fill up all of the air space with commentary at all times, maybe its not as important as we all think? I definitely enjoy the commentary (besides ricky) but just having a little bit to just focus on the riders and hear whats going on without anyone talking was actually refreshing and new. For a few seconds it felt more like I was at the race watching.

Idk if they would ever do this or how they would fit it in but it would be pretty cool if at certain points during the race they all stop talking and everybody just listens to what is going on. I think a lot of ppl would enjoy the change every once in a while. Are there other sports where everyone will just shut up so fans can hear the sounds of the game for a bit? Do you think it would be cool in mx?

The pauses you hear on Peacock are for the lead in to commercial breaks on the TV broadcast. Make a point to listen next week, and you'll hear a 4 - 5 second pause, then Weege/JS will start talking for a couple of minutes, then they'll pause for another 4 - 5 seconds again, followed by a promo for something (SMX, golf on NBC, etc).

Agree that I’d be nice to have some quiet time.

“Sit back and enjoy a lap”

James has great insight and had me laughing multiple times.

It’s starting to feel the similar to RC where his perspective/assumptions of what is taking place on track or under the helmet is a priority over what’s actually happening (JS has much better delivery).

I suspect that’s the result of the corporate overloads pumping “story story story” into their preparations.

Call the race. That is priority one.

Both him and Weege called the race over as Sexton was clearly about to make it interesting.

Sports analysts are the new age weatherman. Can be wrong 50% of the time and still keep their job.

NBC knows RC and JS are the moto equivalent of the big boobed Latina in a red dress

💃🏽 👀 🤤 = 💰

The MX broadcast has been much better than SX. In my mind there’s two reasons why. That being said I would pay extra to have an option of a broadcast with no commentary, just the bikes. It’d kind of be like being at the race but not missing the other side of the track.

Haven't watch NASCAR is quite a while, but they use to have a segment called "TURN IT UP". Cut to cameras close to the race or actually on the retaining wall, no talking, just the sounds. Its was pretty cool actually.

They also broadcasted a race way back in the 80's (when they still actually raced) with no commentary at all.

Just the sound from the track.

Also, F1 broadcasts (when it was our crew of, Hobbs, and Machette) used to do a lap with no talking.

In moto, they talk over the very relevant sound of guys revving when coming up behind to pass, or intimidate.

Or the sounds of who's hooked up coming out of turns, etc...

The stuff you hear when actually at the races.

They do not need to be talking non stop.

I posted the same sentiment in another thread. It's so nice to just hear nothing for awhile. Give us at least 1 lap without talking.

I saw a clay oval stock car race in Ny. Last summer. 38 900 hp car with very little annoucing. It was awesome.  Bball or baseball on a big play the announcers add to the excitement.  Mx should back the talk down and save it for a battle.

Can Gieco come back with 15mins of silence in the booth for 15% off?

Yea thats what I’m talking about, it would be really cool! Especially if theres a super close battle for first going on Id love if they just stopped talking and we could listen to what both riders are doing with the throttle for like a lap.

They will be cuts for ads, or for the highlights edit.

They never come back and carry on talking about what they were saying before the pause.

There were times back in the day that Art Eckman would say, "now let's listen to the race action" and there would be a break in the announcing. I also enjoyed when they did the Honda stopwatch lap, where a static camera shot would show the leader go by and the stopwatch ran as you saw every rider go by until the leader came around again.

I had to mute it last race, it's getting hard for me to listen to these 2, love JS but he speculates way to much and acts like it's fact and after awhile I just can't take it. And Weege is just an idiot. Would love to just hear the bikes or some professional commentating but neither is going to happen.

You will never be happy if JS and Weege aren't good enough

I think they do a good job. My drum I have been beating for a long time is , let us hear the bikes! It’s a Motorsport. Watch a raw video, it’s a night and day difference when you can hear and feel the speed. Too many mile away shots with no bike sound is terrible. Yes they do not need to talk the entire race. Leave some room and turn up the track volume with close cameras shots showing how fast they are actually going.  I swear it feels like weege and James are in my living room and the track is on mute. Its an exciting race killer.

This is such a terrible “solution”. If I wanted a silent experience, I’d watch Formula/Moto E or get in the float tank.

At minimum, mute the announcer mics at each commercial break. Are they getting paid by the word?

Be nice to have an actual race caller hyping up the action on the track.

It's only nice when they briefly don't talk because the broadcast team is basically a podcast discussion over the top of the action of the race rather than actually a race call...

CALL THE DAMN RACE!!

Malin over on the MXGP broadcast does this well. The AMA guys are too busy talking and rambling on and they cant even talk about something that just happened because they are still trying to finish a point. Malin will go quiet for a few and usually something happens like a mistake or a pass and he will comment quickly and move on. Weege and JS always have a damn story to tell.

I find myself liking the MXGP broadcast more and more as he says what we are thinking. Herlings or Prado will destroy a berm and he will be like Arggh ( you all know the sounds he makes) Herlings is on the move! He just destroyed that berm!

We watch the AMA guys going balls out and JS is still talking about some suspension setting he used to run and have some elaborate story about bike set up that takes forever to get to the point.

Long story short here..When the announcer is saying things you are seeing real time it adds to the excitement. like fuck yea i saw that too! Feels like you are talking moto with a buddy. Weege and Js hardly are ever talking about whats happening on screen. Same with RC and Diff on SX. They could learn a lot from the single announcing Malin

Exactly! Call the race, then analyse it after the chequered flag!

JT coming in mid race with 'I want to ask you a question James?' is just so damn weird and borderline disrespectful to the sport -- Like lets ignore the racing for a bit to have a chat -- How is a new fan supposed to be excited watching the racing when the whole commentary teams broadcast philosophy is to find any moment possible to not talk about the action on the track...

TBH I find it less problematic in supercross because theres 8 races in 3hrs instead of 4 races in 4hrs so lots more starts and faster action with more off track downtime to analyse. But if the commentary team can't stay invested and excited for 35 minutes how would a new fan be expected to?

But mile away shots are what the comms guys need to work with, zoomed in close ups of one rider miss everything that is out of shot all the time.

So you cant follow the race.  World of difference between on circuit comms and broadcast, you can only talk about what is on screen, the key is for the second chair to be prompting the director where the on teack battles are off the timing.

We know what a bike sounds like.

Muted until these guys come back! And RDL without "Gentleman" Jim Holly and Daniel Blair is not the same.

I agree they could do with less commentary. You don't really hear the announcer at the actual race anyways, so it would give the feel of being at the race with less talking. Y'all sure b#tch about commentary a lot on here though. I only complain about the repetitive gargling of you know who every 5 seconds of the broadcast. The actual calling of the race seems fine. But less is more in motocross.

It is nice having Weege and James in the booth. Our own commentary in the house overlays nicely at times.

BS, Malin does a great job in MXGP. Like others, these guys have so many lame conversations about golf, surfing etc.. during the race. Plenty of time for that stuff in-between races.

Rewatching now and JT and JS7 talking about how the steel frame is more compliant than an aluminum framed bike. Have these guy's even ridden the current bikes? Answer is probably no. I'll take the Kawi or Yami chassis all day over the KTM for a crappy rough track. Thats what I mean, they're talking out there ass. Thats fine if its just a comment but JS acts like it's fact and keeps going back to it, gets a little annoying imo.

Did anyone notice today in 450 moto 1 there was a spot where there was 3 solid minutes of no commentary? That was awesome to just hear the bikes and watch the battle. The silence was broken by weege saying welcome back so it sounded like it was supposed to go to commercial but instead stayed on the race feed. Either way it was awesome.

More no talking during nbc commercial breaks please! And louder on the track mics everywhere else. Feels like were in the booth with rc and weege when we want to be on the track. Give us the noise!!
