In the recent SML podcast, its been discussed that the Troy Lee team will be no more next year. Gas Gass will be brought in house. Was wondering if anyone had information as to why the team is shutting down, and what the deal was with Troy Lee and the change of ownership?

Didn’t pulp say they are in talks with different manufacturers?

It would make sense to talk with another manufacturer. They were the second Honda team. Then they were the second KTM team when Marv was winning on the factory 250, and now they're the third team? Kinda? It'd be cool to see them run the Beta or Ducati squad, although neither of those OEMs have 250s right now.

Maybe they were a little off put about the Prado thing? Pure speculation but they essentially did all the work for him and he wore none of their sponsors. I thought that whole situation seemed really weird from a sponsor standpoint.

Certainly reasonable to be looking elsewhere if that is the case.

I figured it was obviously due to the GasGas connection but also due to those guys being such core moto guys.

Now you say it, it does seem a pretty KTM group thing to force the team into that situation...

Max Lee is out of the manager role apparently. Frank Latham is coming over from KTM to run the team. Their results in the 250s haven’t been good and Olly sounded pretty frustrated in his post race interview with Pulp. Gas Gas not having fun fun at the moment.

Matthes interviewed Troy early in the year about this and he seemed cool with it, like he was pumped the World Champ was riding his bike

Same thoughts I had. Example: Bobby Hewitt / Husqvarna

Exactly now who ever is running it will have full control of who they hire for riders and employees. Tld always was more about the party than the race no more if it’s brought in house

Even though he was Troy’s son, I still found it odd that they made him the team manager considering how young he is.

I would imagine his departure has zero to do with travel.

Gas gas going in house and TLD finding a new manufacturer would be a net win for the sport and create new jobs. Let’s hope it goes that way.

I thought the whole deal was cool ; for me the 450 riders should be allowed to get their gear deals if above what is proposed by the teams, at the condition they still rock a nice TLD paint job here. I think Prado gave a ton of exposure to TLD while still having his deals, so for me everything looked great. It was a win win I think so I was very surprised to read the rumor about not signing with them for next year. Whatever they do, for sure I hope they stick around because it is kinda of an institution, it would almost be like PC going away.

I’m of the same opinion based on KTM being a corporate entity that ultimately will want total control of their operations…as shown previously at Team Husky, etc.

I think it’s interesting when you look at the sponsors, notably the outside sponsors, that Troy brings to his teams…

PPG, Seaspan, 4WP, Method, Adidas come Puma, Sony Pictures …etc.

Then there’s the sponsors that seem to have been with Troy FOREVER…

Oakley, Alpinestars…& of-course, Red Bull.

In this modern era, if Troy “goes racing”…AGAIN…considering all the other insanely involved stuff he’s got going on at the corporate level…? Damn, that’s commitment.

I’m hopeful that there’s another chapter in the Troy Lee Racing Book.

My thoughts…maybe…Back to Hondas…?
Maybe help bring Ducati MX to Murica (Troy is the PERFECT FIT for this!)…?

We’ll see…

I think TLD Ducati would be a great fit. Other than  Ducati wanting an east coast base.  Maybe they will go back to Honda's . There are rumors of the Firepower Honda and Phoenix Honda teams going away. I hope its not true about them going away. And I hope that Troy stays involved with racing.

Doesn't Troy Lee basically live halfway around the world a good part of the year? Impression I got was that he's winding things down and trying to enjoy life a little more.

You realize Red Bull isn't the only sponsor paying Troy to advertise, right?

So you  think Troy is folding the whole Team because Prado did 5 races with them and didn't run his gear and use all the Team sponsors?

Who said the team is folding? I didn't say that.

It's literally in the title of the thread....

And you said this:

What am I missing?

As far as I'm aware, Troy Lee isn't folding his team. They're just not going to handle the factory GasGas operation.

Okee dokee....so....you are saying that they were so pissed about Prado running 5 races and not using all of the Team Sponsors that they are leaving GasGas?

You realize that Red Bull is the major sponsor for both and probably covers 80-90% of sponsor dollars brought in for both teams....and you did say  "he wore none of their sponsors"

I don’t know why you insist on forming what I’m saying into fitting whatever narrative you’re creating. I don’t care enough to keep going on about this, think what you want. 👍🏻

Bring back the red bull Troy Lee Honda's, those bikes were sick

Wasn't there some recent talks about HRC eventually getting rid of their 250 program and letting it be ran by a satellite team again instead?
