Where is MX Sports trying to take the Nationals?

I am only a consumer/supporter of dirtbikes and the racing of them...that doesn't mean I can't attend an outdoor national and see the massive amount of money and work it takes to put on such an event. It also doesn't mean that I can't figure out why the outdoors is (has always been) a "threshold" sport. The core supporters will always attend, regardless of the weather, stinky overflowing port'o pots, miles of walking in dust, dirt, mud...excessive waits/lines at food and drink vendors. Us guys expect that...hell I embrace that...but you are probably not gonna get yer wife/daughters/girlfriends/little kids to do it more than once. I'm not saying that it should be as convienient as an SX but MUCH more will have to be done to accomodate the non-core or casual fan in order to grow the sport. Attendence = money = growth = hopefully the continuance of the sport.

Bents, I agree. I am glad Reed and Stewart are racing motocross again.

I haven't really seen a lot of bitching in this thread. Just Ozy asking a question about the series, then the foot soldiers coming in to protect someone that is more than capable of protecting him self.

Let's hope not because there are not enough "core fans" to keep this thing afloat. It's going to take some new fans that can enjoy the racing, but are not participant's of the sport.

If the NFL, NBA, MLB, or the PGA ran their companies like DC runs his, there would be a meltdown in the media. Can you imagine if the Superbowl was announced to be played in Florida, then 60 days before the game, they announce they are moving it because of a contract dispute. If the Yankees just up an decided to move from NY to Montana, there would be a congressional hearing. MX is not even close to the NFL, MLB, NBA, and so on. MLB has a checks and balances. You have to clear things with other owners, Players Union, and Selig. MX Sports is the end all, there is no checks and balances. It's DC's way or the highway....

Comparing mx to any of those other sports is just dumb.

I agree Jim...my wife and daughters would go if there were: more toilets, more food/drink vendors, some of those cool spot misty thingys, the walkways/trails were not so full of "loose" rocks/boulders and mud holes. We can't get close to the track anymore for safety's sake but most of the stands/bleachers are "VIP" and limited. I know you can't and shouldn't try to eliminate every discomfort...but there are some things that will have to be done to get those "new" fans out there. I don't know what the GP's look like nowadays but they used to draw huge crowds and I'd venture to say that most of the attendees weren't core fans but there was a large effort to have something for everyone to enjoy...even if it wasn't the race.

Although attendance at the event is a big help, the key to success with this series a better TV package, which isn't going to happen with out more viewers. I am sure those in charge are doing all they can, but the sport is going to have to appeal to a broader base of fans than it does today.

Everybody in my household (old lady included) will happily attend the once a year outdoor at Glen Helen with the track in its current configuration and no new improvements. so I appreciate hearing your point of view, plowboy.

My questions asked (and I already said I'll probably get told it's none of my business) are pretty simple, Is there any research to show that if the tracks spend tens of thousands of dollars on upgrades that enough new fans will show up to give the track owners a return on their investment. I can totally see Glen Helens point of view that if they spend the money they at least want to recoup it, and it doesn't sound like they can get a return on their capital outlay in one year.

I'm just trying to have a discussion here and I'm not upset or complaining :D In fact I'm as happy as a clam. If, and or when, I get upset I'll will give myself a timeout.

Post edit: Dave, I bet you could find the NBA's long-term marketing plan on google. Commissioner Stern is very transparent about his goals. IF you have a good plan and you trust the research behind it there is nothing to hide . . . I mean really, do any of the leagues you mention even have competition? For that matter does MX Sports even have any competition?

I could see my questions upsetting some people if they are just flying by the seat of their pants. MX Sports makes their money regardless of whether or not the Track owners make a profit.

Like I said...I'm no insider. I was kinda lookin' at it from the track owner/attendee point of view. I'm not sure how much influence a "packed" house would have on the TV people. I gotta believe the more people AT the race, the more interest the sponsers/TV people would have in getting involved. Is this a "chicken or the egg" type of deal?

Dude,

You & I are usually "On the same page"; but, you're preconceived ability to throw certain folks under the bus threw me off...

Case in point: Coombs family owned/operated tracks had to make the same improvements (increased "flat" acreage for the pits, improved egress-degrees...etc.) that ALL the other tracks did.

Also, Hangtown/Dirt Diggers had to come to terms with MX Sports & they got a -4- year deal.

So, where (excuse-wise) does that leave Glen Helen?

I have no idea where that leaves Glen Helen, didn't their press release state they were only offered a one year contract?

This is a relevant discussion since everybody in SoCal is ready to tar and feather DC over Glen Helen dropping out. I'm hoping somebody with knowledge of MX Sports marketing plan can show that the upgrades they wanted Glen Helen to make (that GH didn't want to make) are a necessary part of their plan and will provide a return on GH's investment as well as furthering MX Sports long-term plans for the AMA Motocross series. If nobody wants to talk about it from a business point of view then people will most likely assume it was just about DC making more money.

Curiosity and trying to find some semblance of truth is not complaining!

Ozy, I've drug my wife and daughters to too many races over the years (mine included) and they would go if I asked them...but they only go for my sake. Sunburns, stubbed toes, inedible food, thirst and miles between nasty toilets just don't float their boat. For me, it's all just part of the experience. I haven't been to all the tracks but I will say that Thunder Valley and Freestone are spending a lot of thought, money and time improving in ways that enhance the "casual" fans experience. I don't really even want to know what goes on behind closed doors...my dog ain't in that fight. The sport (at a national level) will survive or it won't...not my call. But I bet as long as there are two motorcycles left in the country there will be a race. Me or somebody like me will walk miles to see it, drinking crappy beer, eating ugly food, pissin' in the bushes, and we'll hoot and holler and talk about it for years.

1 yr contract because the improvements that have been needed for years haven't been done...

Make sense?

There's a good faith/bad faith aspect to all of this that's based on a history of Nothing getting done...

Your points are all well taken, and yes my wife would have attended more races if the facilities were better also.

The best example that I know is PBA. Lots of people tune in to watch bull riding. People that have never even gotten close to a bull, let alone ride one. We are getting closer to that with supercross, but we need to also be able to pull those viewers in for the outdoors also.

That's what gets the attention of sponsors looking for a place to market their products.

When Thor isn't willing to pay what it takes to get a 60 second commercial on one of these TV events, that means that the sport is moving forward.

Ouch...economy is hurtin' a lot of people/companies. We need Tide or Cheer or Gain to step up...we use more of their stuff than anybody...lol. Seriously, I'm no business man and anything I say about that side of it would just prove how stupid I am...I can only comment on what I know keeps a certain percentage of the money spending public from attending an outdoor race.

Wow, I can't believe that the decision by Glen Helen not to continue with the series because they would not settle for anything other than the maximum length contract, has turned me and MX Sports into such a controversial deal. It was not a case of money, nor was it a case of the race track itself; it was length of term, period.

The vision here is to keep all of the riders and teams engaged in outdoor motocross by giving them what they want: Better exposure, better television and online packages, better facilities, better treatment, better racing. Same goes for what we want to give the fans -- a better overall experience. It all seems to have begun to work with Chad back in the series and James on his way back.

The Glen Helen thing is unfortunate and embarrassing, and we thought they were coming back -- that's why the schedules went out with them on it -- but they decided not to continue unless they got a full-term contract, and we were not prepared to give them that. They didn't even want to meet in the middle. So there was no getting past it, and they made that clear when they canceled the race. I don't know what else MX Sports was supposed to do except move forward without them. And we are.

I feel bad for every motocross fan in Southern California and around the world that was affected by this late-change, and I hope that whatever we end up doing out there will start to make up for this unfortunate turn of events. Please don't hold your contempt for me or MX Sports against outdoor motocross itself.

Why do you keep dancing around the answer to the most obvious question:

Why did MX Sports refuse to offer Glen Helen a 4-year contract?

Well, if there is one thing either side of the argument can take away from this thread, it's that Racer X and MX Sports always takes time (from far more important things, I'm sure) to come on here and address inquiries from the common fan -regardless of whether you're a self-professed insider or 'average joe'. Thanks Davey, and good luck to your Moutaineers next week; they're going to need it if they end up playing my alma mater, the MSU Spartans! Wink

Same reason High Point, Steel City, Budds Creek, Washougal, and the other tracks didn't get four-year deals -- there is work to be done, and that's the best way to get it done. And they were all willing to bet on themselves to make those improvements and then get a longer extension.

Red Bud, Unadilla and Spring Creek have done a lot of work and made improvements in the last few years for which they were rewarded with full terms. Does every player on every team get the same length contract? Does every track on the NASCAR schedule or Moto GP have the same contract terms of length? Why can't motocross conduct business the same way as most other sporting entities?

That still doesn't answer the question, which was not about GH. We are getting a bit defensive overthere, aren't we?

Phud, if read the second paragraph, I believe It does answer the question. And being defensive and defending your decisions are kind of one and the same...

I don't think it has. Only with the limited local Calif. folks has it caused such a reaction, and I really don't find fault with their reaction since it is a local National with such a rich history.

Sure, most of the people I've talked to are somewhat "bummed" about it, but they see it as just another track that will get opportunity, just as in prior years. But mostly understand, it's business. Life will go on in the MX Nat. world.

I still thinks its funny that people are still blaming MX Sports for "canceling" Glen Helen when it was really Glen Helen that pulled out. Hell, it didn't take me 10000000+ responses from DC to realize that.

I don't blame DC for not giving GH a extended contract when they weren't going to comply with it. MX Sports is trying to grow motocross and make it better, but GH wasn't going to make the changes. Its just business.

Why do you keep dancing around the answer to the most obvious question:

Why did MX Sports refuse to offer Glen Helen a 4-year contract?

He gave you a solid, answer and you say he’s dancing around the answer?

Glen Helen looks like a shit hole.......how’s that?

I am not sure why this doesn’t make sense to a lot of you guys? You want a four year contract? Put it in writing that you’re going to do so and so with your track to host the premier motocross series in the world.

You know all those high price beers, gate fees, pit passes, that most of you bitch about? If they are going to make that kind of loot, why should some of it not be put back into upgrading the facility?

If all a promoter wanted to do was pocket the money I wouldn’t want them in my series either. (Not sure if this is the case or not)

And you know what, it’s cool to ask questions, but when you have the main man here, doing his best to take some of you guys serious, (side note, hardly any of you state your real name, and he does) and your constantly asking those questions like your questioning his motive......it gets old.

The beauty of MX moving forward is that it will force all the best to race! The old excuse was, "there isn't any exposure, blah, blah, blah" and now there will be no excuse and the teams and factories will say no to SX only contracts. I'm sure MX Sports wants to put the outdoors in a position where they cannot afford to have their best guys on the gate. I for one will remain confident in DC's direction. To me he is core moto and won't let it become outdoor sx-that would be the kiss of death and he knows it. Now guys like JS have no choice but to get outside and get dirty! Time will tell and it will sort itself out. Now, if DC could get SX to drop a couple of rounds, re-institute a Trans USA series...then we'll crown his ass as the man in all things MX!!

Where on earth did you come to this conclusion? There is a long ways to go before the series get's to the point of being such a great marketing tool that the OEMs will have no other choice than to field a team and participate in the series. This might be hard for you to gasp, but right now it's going the other way. Nothing against DC, but he has his work cut out for him if he want's this series to continue to have A-level OEM support.

Nothing against DC and I wish him well, but sometimes even a guy like DC has no control over the realities of the market.

Been away from this thread. I came to this conclusion by seeing the before and after with regard to the AMA running the show vs MX Sports. If you can't see the changes between the two entities, then I'm afraid I can't help you. Almost every participant has spoken positively about the switch to sat races (riders and teams love it b/c they get an extra day at home for ex.), we are getting more tv not to mention immediate tv for the series, for Christ sake we have David Bailey back on tv and that has been awesome. That and more. We have seen more change in one year than we have in the past decade. MX Sports has listened to all the stakeholders and have responded. Some will work, others may not, but at least they are stepping up to the plate and taking a chew on it.

OEM's and the riders cannot come up with convenient excuses any more about why they won't race the outdoors. OEM's will not be paying big cash for one series any longer imho. That includes JS.
