Boys, it's time for a new truck.
Current ride is a 2006 Toyota Tundra Double Cab SR5 4x4.
Generally the truck has been great to me but parts are simply aging out and it's going to get increasingly expensive and I'd like something more modern.
I've owned most brands in the past and have really had good luck with the Toyota Tundra but see that the modern Tacoma is basically the same size as my older version - which worked well, but a tad more cab space would be welcome. I also had a chance to ride in a neighbor's F150 crew cab for quite a while and was very impressed.
So let's hear your thoughts on these trucks as everyday drivers that get moto duty as well!
I love Toyota, but the new tundra is not great. The transmission is a nightmare to drive. It gets confused what gear to be in, creating some scary situations where it just won’t accelerate because it won’t shift from first. Also a slew of minor problems with the integrated tech that just have made for a sour experience.
If you’re looking for a daily driver that can haul your bikes on the weekend then peep the Ford Maverick. Affordable, drives like a dream, great fuel economy, isn’t gigantic like most modern trucks as of recent
Turbo'd motors in a full size truck (not talking diesels).... or really any vehicle. No freaking thanks.
Supporting the UAW....pass.
I'd say Tacoma.
New mini Toyota coming for '25 I believe. Base price will be low 20's.

2016 Taco owner here. Best truck I’ve ever owned. Bought it new, now 111k miles and have had zero problems with it. TRD Offroad 4x4 lifted 3”. My almost 60 y/o self has no problems loading and unloading bikes. The 2024 Tacomas look intriguing…
Get you a f 1 smokems with the 10 speed and a yote. Toss a whipple on it and call it a day.
I cannot get past the looks of the latest gen tundras. Tacomas not so bad. Had my f-150 eco with the 3.5 for two years now. Thing definitely gets up and goes. Installed a leveling kit a few weeks ago. Sits more like a super duty now. Been happy with the truck overall but man the stupid electrical gremlins in these vehicles anymore. Like driving an iPhone on wheels.
Toyota all day. I’m Toyota for life. They are bulletproof and the only things they need are gas and oil.
FIRST GEN TUNDRA FOR LIFE!!!
A long time Toyota driver/owner here Three Tacos and two Tundras over the years. Loved them, but that being said in late 2022 I bought a Ford F150 hybrid after test driving every truck available. There is no comparison between the machines, it tows about anything you can hitch up to, is refined, rides like a car, no rattles, great visibility, and averages 20 mpg - on a trip to Florida it got 27mpg. If this thing holds up, I can never see me owning a Toyota again, just too agricultural.
Resale value.
Toyota all day long.
2004 Tacoma prerunner, and 2004 V8 4runner.
Both still running strong, and ride like new.
(But I'm also a vehicle maintenance freak.
Oil change every 3,000 miles, timing belt/chain when required, brakes, alignment, etc...
I stay up on all of that.
Cheaper than new vehicle payments)
Get a 2.5 gen tundy. 2014-2021.
Yota….
Put some money into that first gen! I love mine perfect size.
Brocoma
I’m into comfort so i opt for the Ford/Chevy/Ram brands. Never had any issues other than standard maintenance. The last Ford F150 I had was a 2019 eco boost and it was getting 24 mpg on the freeway. I tried a Tacoma once and was not impressed with the size/ride/comfort compared to the F150
You lost me at 'replacing 06 tundra'.
Why would you commit such a crime?
Been driving Fords in and out of Baja for over a decade. The current F150 Hybrid is rated at 23/23 and has 2.4 kW of output stock and for $750 can have 7.2 kW. With a 6.5’ bed…it’s pure Moto Hauler.
My current Baja-Bike carrier is a 2019 T150 Transit tats been virtually bullet-proof for over 150,000 and just returned from one of many Baja trips. Again…BULLETPROOF.
Currently, Ford has 1.9% for 72-74 months on 2023 F150s. I’m currently looking for an F150 set-up like the hybrid I mentioned. Gonna pseudo Raptorize it for chasing in Baja/SCORE via the fine folks at Baja HQ.
Whatever you get, I hope you’re happy with it.

I wanted a new truck, but i’m keeping my 2014 Tundra. I wouldn’t touch anything manufactured in the last few years. I was so disappointed by the new tundra and its supposed increase in fuel economy… it’s like 4 mpg more than my 5.7 why would i sell mine and pay that much more to gain so little. My recommendation is find the cleanest 2021 Tundra TRD PRO you can find and stick with what is reliable.
That's a tough question to answer. The Tundra lost me on looks alone with this new gen - I just can't get used to it. Ugly AF. Plus, add all the stories I've heard (referenced above) about transmission issues and I'm out.
I've been thinking about those new Tacomas myself, but man, they are expensive. I might just keep my 2013 Tacoma 5-speed. Just rolled over 280K recently. No problems yet; I'll let you guys know when it whimpers for the first time.
Can you get 4 doors and a 6.5' bed with a F150?
Depends on what your priorities are. Sounds like you are a "keep a truck forever" kinda guy which basically rules out anything American made in the last so many years as they are all full of electrical gizmos, turbos, and have issues once they get past warranty.
As far as the supposed awesome mpg's of the Ford PowerBoost hybrid, I can tell you from experience that goes straight out the window if you are towing. Did a bunch of miles in my 2019 Tundra pulling a 7x14 box trailer and a bunch in a 2022 F150 hybrid pulling same trailer. The F150 will make you cry with the single digit mpg's.. lol Yes, pulls good. No issues. Just keeps the turbos spooled, shuts off the hybrid, and drinks some gas.
@fourfourone Nice looking truck - I see you're from CT also - think you passed me on the Berlin Turnpike around 6:45 this morning.
I was in my blue Tacoma......small world! lol
Tacoma.
I've had my 2010 DCSB sport for 8 yrs @150k and it's been a solid truck. I've replaced a wheel bearing and the blower motor resistor. 1GR-FE is one of the most reliable motors known to man.
That was me! You were in the right lane, blue sport right?
Yes , blue 2018 TRD Sport, heading into Meriden...think I've seen your truck a few times in the morning. I'm always checking out cool Tacoma's.
It all depends on what you want out of the truck. Are you wanting a more comfy truck with all the bells and whistles? Looking for a truck with high resale? Are you planning on towing a lot?
If it's a comfy truck with all the bend and whistles, go with the Ford. Resale, really all three hold up well, but I know the tacoma and f150 hold amazing resale value. I haven't looked at the resale value on the newest gen tundra though. If it's towing, then go with Ford first, then tundra. I've heard some funky things about the newest tundra engine/transmission package that would make me weary.
That said, I have a 2020 tacoma for my daily driver and I love it. It does everything I need it to, still has the same "feel" as driving a normal truck, and it tows our little 5×10 cargo trailer loaded with bikes perfectly. I don't think I'd tow anything bigger than a 6×12 cargo trailer with it, though.
I vote tacoma if you're like me and are planning to use yours like me.
Id consider myself a Toyota loyalist but the new tundra seems to be plagued with engine failures and quality issues. I also wouldn’t buy the first year of a new gen of any car so I’d hold off on the Tacoma for at least a year. The 23 tacos are pretty sweet though
Tacoma for sure! I got a 2023 and I love it! They are fricken bulletproof
I drove by you and was like, that's a clean sport. I always liked that blue color.
