People in the US do tax like self employed people do in the rest of the world. You earn your money and you owe an amount at the end of the year, rather than (for example in the uk) paying tax on every payday.
So you basically declare what you earned in the year and work out what you owe. They make it confusing intentionally and there are companies that will help you with it but it’s really not hard at all.
