I get these aren’t factory teams, but enough with the ‘privateer’ rhetoric. ClubMX Yamaha, Firepower Honda, TiLube Honda, BarX Suzuki, Motoconcepts Honda, etc their riders aren’t privateers. Kudos to them for doing it all on their own privately, but I consider them to be almost satellite teams. The real privateers still show up in vans.
Unpopular opinion: Max Anstie & Coty Schock are not ‘privateers’.

I agree. If you pull up in a box van and your dad or friend is your mechanic, and you're basically racing on your own dime...you can call yourself a privateer.
Riders earning a salary are not privateers... But of course, the broadcast is gonna do what it needs to in order to make a bigger story out of it. It's just another Feld-ism.
Your quite right with everything you said.
its cool to see these guys do good though.

Bingo
They also are not Factory Riders either
That’s what this topic always comes down to. I wouldn’t call either of the riders privateers but rather they are on a “privateer team”. Or should we say satellite teams?
Satellite. Privateer team is you arranging your own sponsors and not pitting out of a semi
I wonder what ML would call his team?
I’m sure he would call it privateer but I would call it satellite. They really need to set a definition but doubt anyone would ever agree on that
THIS is it.
Seems like the title needs changed to “Popular Opinion”
I hate when thy say this! Just because it’s a private team doesn’t make them privateers…
They're Support Teams. Sure, it's semantics but a satellite team is Pro Circuit. The ones mentioned above are most certainly not privateers, they also aren't at the level of a satellite effort (Club seems close), but they are recieving factory support from an OEM among other things. I've also been getting tired of hearing the broadcast not make that distinction.
I agree they are not privateers. However, it is my understanding that Schock does not receive a salary; i.e., it was a last minute ride that had no budget. The entire team had to vote on if they would even give Schock a bike to ride.
Unpopular opinion but i am with you on this one.
Neither star racing, PC kawi or hep/twisted tea are factory teams imo.
You are either the brands official factory team or you are a satelite team.
I know that Yamaha gave star their 450 program but for me it lacks the luster of a real factory effort like Honda.

Star is kind of unique in that they started as a true satellite 250 team but they did so good that Yamaha outsourced their entire factory effort to them, which Yamaha had been doing even going back to the JGR days. Star is certainly a full factory team though at this point. Yamaha even has them running the same graphics as the factory MXGP team, it's just how Yamaha has chosen to do business. So I'd say Star is at this point on another level from PC, which is a true satellite team, and whatever Suzuki is doing.
Anyone watch the Weege post race vid? Holy cow you see Kevin Moranz rig!!
Agree with most here but it is a lot more clear cut in a lot of Motorsports compared to mx/sx.
A factory team is the official manufacturer backed main competitive effort, like HRC or KTM.
A satellite team by definition has factory support, that's where the term comes from, but is run by a 3rd party like TLD and I guess Star and PC could fall into this category but they definitely blur the lines and it's hard to call.
There are obviously still well run, sizeable and capable teams who do not fit the above criteria, i.e. no factory support except maybe a helping hand or spare part when things are looking dire, who are privateers technically but still have a big advantage over the dude with a Sprinter and his Dad or buddy trying to make it into the night show.
