Just some questions for my memory : Emig had a Lloyd's of London insurance claim ? If he cashed it ,had to quit? And RJ, his doctor (stupidly ) recommended his wrist be fused(so he could return faster)? And Tony D was working on a carburetor ? And got his eye with the screwdriver ?
Wasn’t Tony D a grinder injury ? Always guessed it was something to do with a pedestal grinder 🤷♂️
Tony D. from MXA -
TELL US ABOUT YOUR EYE INJURY. I was installing shelves in my garage right after the Anaheim Supercross, and the long screwdriver I was using slipped and cut my eye. I lost all of the 1980 season, but I still wanted to race, so I put a patch over my bad eye and rode with one eye. For 1981 I was on a Maico. The first couple of races were disasters. It was hard to adapt to my depth perception with only one eye. I may have been in the top 10 as a privateer racing with only one good eye, but I had been a Champion. So, I figured that was it. I gave it a try; it did not work out, and that is when I started my motocross schools.

I can't think of that kids name, rode for Pro Circuit Kawasaki in mid to late 2000's,....got on pain pills or something after a few bad crashes,....want to say his name was Austin,...blond hair I think,...someone help me,,,,,
Rene Hofer, killed in an avalanche
Australian rider Jono Porter died in a first turn crash
Are you thinking of Austin Stroupe (2008-09)?

I think it was Tuna Hepler, good catch.
Just having fun.
I didn't read all the posts, did anyone mention Ernesto Fonseca and Jimmy Button? Both with spinal injuries.
RC and Villopoto are a bit overlooked on this topic but they called it quits at 26 and 27 respectively. Burnout I guess you’d say. People never mention them because of how successful they were. So even though their careers were shorter, we don’t think of it that way.
Some of these stories suck, and are hard to talk about. How about Emig cashing in a million bucks ? But to get it,could never race pro again ?
Yes
Yep, discussed RC walking away in his prime on page 3.
Don't remember if anyone addressed 'Poto in depth.

I know what you're referring to with Emig but don't remember enough specifics to step out on a limb and put it in print. I do know there were people questioning how he could still race (like at LL) since the terms of the settlement supposedly were contingent upon that NOT happening, and I believe the loophole was because he wasn't doing it professionally... but again, don't quote me on that.
RC was winning the overalls but never had a perfect season going. Bubba won the first moto of the season at Hangtown. He won the first motos at Budds and Red Bud too.
Pit Row
Sorry, I mis-spoke and you're correct. I was thinking of overall wins.
No doubt he would have probably won every overall. That title was as good as his if he really wanted it. RC was like yeah I'm good, I have so many lmao!
Seems like he scored somewhere around 290 out of a possible 300 points in the 6 nationals he raced that year (never worse than 2nd in a moto?), so he probably could have skipped 3 rounds and still won the title since no one else was consistent... or on the line consistently.
Ryan is the one who landed on Trey when he broke his back.
Did Corman ever race a national besides the flooded Budds Creek one? I always wondered where he'd be now if he stuck with it, he was battling with Friese in amateurs the year before he went pro.
Bobby Bonds. Was never the same after Langston at Hangtown. I’d always heard how bad breaking your elbow was. But never understood till I broke mine a few years ago. My arm will never work the same again. Had the same thought about Craig when he broke his last year…..
Matt LeBlanc. Got hurt when he and Thrasher came together at Millville, Star cut him, and he retired at the ripe old age of 19/20.
Thanks for clearing that up. The bad rumor helped me to wear safety glasses whenever using a grinder. Guess it was the screwdriver I should have feared. Such a bummer for Tony.
to my knowledge, he did not. Could be incredibly wrong - but from what I remember, he was supposed to be riding for YoT the upcoming year but destroyed (?; both) ankles & somewhat forced his hand.
If anyone can speak to that better, feel free, this was a long time ago I might've spoke out of turn.
Taylor Futrell. Went 7-5 in his 2nd pro race at Southwick 2009 on a privateer bike. Broke his foot in sx 2010 and wasn't the same.
Matt Bisceglia had a few injuries. He started out factory Honda I believe. Also raced for JGR and others. I know he broke his leg and had a foot injury. Injuries definitely hindered his career. He could run top 5 when healthy, which wasn't often.
Did anyone mention Ben Riddle
