Do they route the coolant overflow tube to the rear on Tomacs bike?

His old man balls were hanging so low they were rubbing between his MX14 scoop and the mud flap. It was even making McAdoo blush

Carmichael incorrectly came up with some theory that shock fluid was leaking onto the exhaust pipe (not possible with that pipe and his shock wouldnt work at that point). Eventually they asked the team and said he fried the clutch. Basically you can wear down the fiber plates until you basically have metal to metal grabbing in the clutch. This will smoke but the bike will go on for a while with a burnt clutch

Perhaps his pre-race meal?

That was super dumb from Carmichael, as without oil the damping would go away. Having ridden a bike with a blown shock, it is basically unrideable.

Wish I’d just have a mechanic and not really care how a bike mechanically works.

Yep - it's a virtual pogo stick when it's only on the spring.

Remember Loretta’s from a few years ago?  Same thing.  He’s lucky he didn’t have to go 30 +2 last night.

And I don't buy for an instant that Tomac didn't notice it with the bike and it didn't impact his ability to ride it.  These guys can feel microscopic adjustments in anything from air pressure, frame stiffness, clutch feel, etc.  We know Eli likes a cable over hydraulic just based on feel - he had to feel there was an issue for over half the race.  He just wasn't going to make any excuses and props to him for that.  Rest assured he knew he was dealing with an issue - and it had to have had some level of impact on his riding.  He just wasn't making excuses.

Johnny hopper said it last night. Eli is the dream rider you want to have on your team cause he’ll never blame the bike, even if the issue is obviously the bike.

This. Plus, "My [insert all the sponsors who pay me here] Yamaha always works so well that even when it's smoking like a burnt out city after the Russians bombed, it still performs perfectly."

He’s just not overt about it but he’s commented on his set up being off after many races.

It would seem someone has an invention to make those clutches bulletproof by now. He has to hammer that thing.

Yeah i think he got frustrated and abused it for a few laps and also didn't adjust it by rolling in more free play. I doubt he smoked a new clutch all by himself in those 5-10 laps. I think combination of his abuse and the tension on the plates from him forgetting /not realizing it needed adjustment

If I was Star I would be contacting some of the best metallurgists around to test prototype plates. Maybe something pre-existing in the aerospace realm can provide quality feel and increased reliability.

The oil the clutch is running in gets overheated and starts smoking.  Smoke would be coming from the crankcase vent.

I could no doubt agree with RC's comment about shock fluid leaking on the pipe BUT that would hold true for only a lap or so since it would become pretty apparent that couldn't be the case when the backend of the bike continued to work as it should.  It seemed feasible at first since the smoke did seem to spout worse when the rear end was compressed down.  Not gonna throw shade on RC for bringing the possibility up.

Tommys in San Diego shuttered last year.    Was really bummed to see that.     In-N-Out....I only go there if Im on on my bike, you can't get near them anymore....long car lines/parking issues.

Same in Phoenix, like Chick Fil A in Atlanta!

everyone reverts to clutch, but if you think about it i think it was the valve seals, i think the bike sucked sand, and ruined the valve seals, bike sucks air from front and there were multiple moments he and his bike inhaled sand in the sand section, if clutch got smoked it think it was from the lack of oil due to it burning it cause valve seals experienced sand, glass media in valve stems, valve seats, that whole engine was smoked on lap 5 of running right behind some ones scoop tire....

Yamaha frontward air suction motors are notorious for intake valves, seats, guides, seals getting worn.

he said clutch felt fine.... smoke was oil burning due to valve seals, im telling you!

Do bikes still come with the cable adjuster?  Any videos of him adjusting? Losing play. He did seem to come out of that sweeper a little slow. The rest of the track he had plenty of forward action.

Keep in mind....As the clutch wears away, it causes the cable to slacker not tighter. In the days of cable clutches, the strategy was to keep the tension right so the clutch was there when they fanned/slipped/etc. Hydraulic clutches are constantly adjusting themselves based off the valving/wear.

Ever fried a clutch? You end up with no free play.
