I was surprised at how fast these guys were. They were absolutely hauling, especially Magoo. Jeff Ward almost won it. Andre Malherbe fell and had to be carted off. 1st moto
Here’s a pretty good write up on it

Don't sleep on Magog!
Haha! I had to go back and change it lol
The same year Magoo swept the Trophee and MX des Nations .
The 80's.....the greatest era....bar none.
500cc 2 strokes. It doesn't get any better.

Suspension looks so....mushy???
The real question…
Would Danny have been faster on his Maico…?
💪🏼
To the finish line or to the ambulance?
Darrell Shultz was fast and then Magoo was even faster.
Shu was the epitome of tough.
The story of him checking out of the hospital while recovering from a collapsed lung to get to the Carlsbad National to score enough points to secure the 500 title is just nuts (not the McAdoo kind, but the crazy kind). Had to be made out of gristle.
Doesn't matter the era Pro's are Pro's!
Unreal. Would’ve loved to see some of these races in person
Look how gnarly Carlsbad was. Not the groomed tracks we see today.
Respect for the guys who rode that crazy ass stuff at speed on bikes that took real skill to manhandle.
Good video those guys were hauling the mail for sure!
I never missed a Carlsbad USGP, those were some of the best days ever!
I've told the story a few times here. My pops owned a liquor store later on in life and our crew had five kegs of heineken.
Two for the night before and three for the day. You should've seen the peoples look on their faces as we rolled them up on carts to the Carlsbad Freeway. 😲
This is where Bengt Abergs bike broke down and he rolled over to our crew and I gave him a mug of Heineken.
He slugged it down muddy snot-puppies and all and the crowd went wild!
My ol buddy Zap wrote about it:

GREAT USGP . . . The beginning of Magoo's amazing year!
Remember, Wardy was a 125 guy at the time racing the 500 against the World's best . . . Fastest in qualifying, he showed everyone he could be fast on any size bike.
THESE MX POSTERS AND MORE ARE AVAILABLE AT WHEELSPIN RACEWEAR.COM . . .
Great photos for posters 👍
Even growing up in the era after this, this era is still super cool and it's mind blowing how fast they went on those tracks with the brakes and suspension they had, truly impressive.
You're right!
They had beast mode back then too! As long as he could give it the gas he was good. Didn't need the left side 🙂
I've been watching a shitload of old mx racing. Im convinced the best from the 70s and 80s on natural tracks are every bit as good as today's riders. Only the very best however. The guys in 20th spot in the old mx races look a lot like me.
Pit Row
Magoo had nothing for Darrel 99% of the time.
It would be scary to have a national at Carlsbad now, the 450 guys would hit 70 mph on that track .
When Danny got on a Honda the crashing stopped and the wins followed. Hated to see Sgt.Shultz retire early with that bad knee
It was. I had my 88 KX500 revalved and resprung, they went stiff on my fork springs for the day, 23 pound springs. That converts to .40 kg/mm. Today that’s used for 140 pound kid on a 125. Suspension is a lot better now.
Great racing, Carlsbad was slippery at best, those guys were absolute beasts!
It was Great time to be alive Magoo 💪🏼
The data would disagree with you.
I loved watching Magoo ride, but his speed is grossly over blown.

Here's my source for my data. They talk about Darrell in there also
1982 was the first year I didn't go to Carlsbad after a run of about 5 years.... It seemed like every year I went, Wolsink was the man.
Check out the mud flap! I think he became a dentist when he retired
Winning one national and sweeping the MX and Trophy des Nations was cool, but it was far from a great season.
For those who believe, no proof is necessary. For those who don't believe, no proof is possible
Keep in mind I never stated anybody was faster than the other I dont play that game. I said when he went to HRC he got much better. I can appreciate your passion.
Yeah, I was going to note that not only were those guys every bit as capable as anyone today, but Carlsbad was a fast track . . . I mean, it had the Freeway.
USGPs there were very cool events, made two, one as a pit hench in support class.
Post a reply to: 1982 500 USGP These guys were fast!
