'81 was definitely the better engine.

The RM125X (first year of Full Floater rear suspension) was still air-cooled - the RM125Z was the first of the water-cooled Full Floater (greatest rear suspension of all time) 125 Suzukis. In their day, these bikes were faster than a batouttahell.

I owned the 82 125 z. Raced it for 2 years. Rode it for 3 more years. Super fast top end. It was a screaming bullet. I wish I had it back.

Man I've been off of here for over a year and they add a cool Old School Board while I'm gone? Sheesh...

I had a Z when I was younger, my first ever MX bike...

Just this winter I picked up a "D" and a "Z" (z is parts bike). Currently trying to get it done in time for a few AHRMA races around here this summer.

Currently I'm stuck because the '83 shock has a bad shaft. So...I've been watching and looking to find a new shock for it...

I love them too
I could never have one back then but I sure dreamed of getting one.
25 years later, I have 5 of them (2 running/3 in pieces)

The tank is the original after Plastic Renew, the front number plate is OEM, the fenders and side panels are Maier.

Getting close to done!

One thing I'm PISSED about is my DG pipe won't fit. It's brand new, but it's been sitting on my shelf since February. I called DG and they told me to get lost because they only have a 30 day warranty. That's BS. At least I have the stock pipe to put on until I MAKE the DG pipe fit.

[color=green:7b152]you are doing a great job on that restore
Tell DG if they cant help you that you will tell your story on every vintgage message board about the crap they are putting you through.I did with my Electro Sport dual sport kit. They did little to help me and I let people know about it.
Honestly, your bike looks unbelievable

I rode a lot with a guy that raced RMs during that time. When he bought his new RM125Z (82), he was going to keep the '81 X model for a practice bike, as it was still in great condition.

He ended up putting all of the '82 plastic & seat on the '81, and using the '82 for a practice bike. The D model in '83 was even mellower. The X was better than both years after it

Lee are you trying to corner the market so there is no competition in the ARHMA ranks. or is there an 82 and older vet classin district 16. 60/40 class? age has to be 40 or over and added to the bike = 60 years? older you get the newer bike you are allowed <img class= " title="Laughing">

Update from DG -- they said they are going to send me the correct sized header flange for the pipe. I told them I could have the wrong one cut off and new one welded on. We'll see if anything shows up...

Here is my 1981 RM125. It is no museum piece, but I never wanted it to be. I was looking for a bike to ride. A big thanks to Lee for all his help, Moto814 too!
